The line y’all were trying to figure out is “you can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor”. It’s a reference to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor who famously married and divorced and remarried multiple times. But also a double meaning like Taylor herself wants that crazy love with this person she’s singing about.
And she wrote it about her relationship with Joe Alwyn, which was just getting started when Taylor took a year off from public view, following the nastiness of the Kanye/Kim edited phone call release, where Kim made it look like Taylor had okayed Kanye lyrics about Taylor, where he called her a bitch. Taylor had okayed a bit of the lyrics, but never heard that he called her a bitch. Kim’s edited video got lots of people calling Taylor a liar, and Kim called Taylor a snake. Taylor took ownership of the snake label and made it her own. You’ll see that in the stage decor later in the Rep concert footage, and the music video for Look What You Made Me Do. FYI, the Reputation Concert video will stop streaming on Netflix after Dec 30.
Something worth of note about Reputation is that this is her comeback album and tour after being bullied by the media and public. It was so bad that she dissapeared from the public eye for a year and came back with the album and tour without media promotion. She had the motto "there will be no explanation, there will just be Reputation,"and refused them interviews, she just spoke to her fans directly through her social media. I feel that makes this intro and the next song: I Did Something Bad even more badass. 👌🏼😏
But is this really a comeback? I mean...it's more of a reinvention of one self after all the smack that went on around her. But comeback??? Comeback from what?
Taylor is fully involved in the whole creation of her songs. She often has in mind what she wants the final version to sound like and works with her producers to make it a reality. But she will also take ideas from her producers and create lyrics off of a track someone brings to her. Mostly, though, she's the one with the song and cranks it out on piano or guitar and then gets with her producers and magic happens. She surrounds herself with really good people and she trusts her gut a lot. She's very open to the whole song creation process, which means she's also very open to herself and her feelings.
She says "He can be my jailor, Burton to this Taylor, every love i know in comparison is a failure". It's such a clever line cause Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were a couple that was famously getting excessive media coverage, especially in a negative way. A lot of their relationship with the media sort of mirrors the way Taylor gets brutally criticized
When she sings “baby let the games begin, let the games begin” it makes me think she’s like…if the media wants to come at me and paint me as a selfish, fake person, then “f” them. I’m tired of it. But if that’s how you want to play it…let’s do this. I’m Taylor F’g Swift. Baby let the games begin!
i love TS and Beyoncé both because they’re not just singers or dancers or writers… they’re performers. they know exactly how to hold the attention of a huge crowd and deliver the show of your life.
I agree and get so annoyed when the media repeatedly tries to create drama where it doesn’t exist between all these powerful successful badass women. We don’t need to pit them against each other. There is room for all of them.
There is really only one song about Taylor Lautner called Back To December on her Speak Now album in 2010. Reputation is mostly about how Kanye and Kim lied about Taylor on a doctored tape that they made making Tayor look bad when it was actually them. This was discovered later when the real tape was released exposing how Kanye and Kim edited the tape. But because of what they did, the Kanye and Kim fans turned on Taylor and called her a snake. It was so bad and hurtful that Taylor disappeared for a year. When she returned to the public it was with this album! Taylor decided to turn it around and have fun with the snake theme and was totally a badass! I am not explaining this perfectly, but you can probably find all the information on Google or RUclips. Also, what they did with the tape, and the permission that they claimed they got from Taylor, had the lyrics (I think Taylor and I can still have sex, I made that bitch famous"). Taylor did not agree to that. There are disgusting videos of Kanye in concert singing that song on his tilted stage and everyone in the audience calling Taylor a bitch. Mind you this was after when Kanye got up on stage and took the microphone out of Taylor's hand that she had just received at an award show. He said Beyonce should have won, only a complete narcissist asshole would have done that to a 17-year-old girl.
So glad you guys did this song!!! The reputation tour is 🔥!! I Did Something Bad and Don’t Blame Me are other standouts to check out from this tour. There is a beat break that’s pretty unusual in I Did Something Bad that Taylor dreamt and woke up to record. There is video of her producer turning that into the final product. Very interesting to watch her creative process.
she writes all her lyrics but she is super involved in the production too, i think you should react to her song I did something bad and then react to the making of i something bad. you'll get a pretty good idea of how involved she is in the entire creative process
She's a SONGWRITER not a writer, which means she compose music/melodies and lyrics, then she co produce to give the final sound. let's not forget that songwriting is writing music/melodies and lyrics.
The best part of this for those who don’t know, is her Reputation tour was the first time anyone saw her in over a year. It was her entry into her darker side as well as embracing her sexuality, after primarily being a “good girl” and worried about her public rep. After the Kanye/Kim BS, she released this album and it was just a totally new vibe for her. So…as far as the intro and opening and the crowd response…Imagine only knowing Taylor as a sweet country girl and then she disappears and comes back with this! Just 🔥
The line, "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" is perfect. She has had countless opportunities to quit, she used the discord as a positive tool to build what she has. Kudos to Ms. Swift.
Taylor is a living legend! Her live performances are the best of the best! The amount of work it takes to perfect ones breathing while dancing and singing live is a massive undertaking. Let alone everything else it takes to put on a full length, A List, sold out stadium world tour! All that fame, success, money, power, scrutiny and it hasn't corrupted her one bit! Rare, extremely rare in todays world of celebrity and social media! The people around her that are her most trusted loved ones, friends and team must be great people! Can't forget that it takes a village to put True Talent on top of the A List pyramid.
The lyric when you were asking about Taylor Lautner is "You could be my jailer (referring to the robber lyric before), Burton to this Taylor" (Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor)
I think it’s silly if swifties have a problem with Beyonce fans and vice versa! We should be proud of our two iconic female legends literally keeping the music industry going! The two biggest tours in the world are women! Love that for both of us!!!!❤❤❤❤
99.99999% of Swifties at the very least respect the hell out of Queen Bey, if not love her. The media and salty factions of each fan base cause trouble with lies, insults and fabricated drama... but real Swifties know what it feels like when lies and hatefulness almost destroy the artists we love and would never Ever try to do that to another artist.
she writes all of her songs and a few with one or two others, but Beyoncé often has up to 11-22 writing one song like most artists and Taylor is completely immersed in the production of each and the concert too. I respect Beyoncé and am not hating, just stating facts.
Great reaction, I echo the other's request "I Did Something Bad" either live at the Rep. Tour or at the awards show. And then "Don't Blame Me" live. So glad you guys enjoyed this one.
If you want a really interesting look into her creative process (and involvement), check out a series called "The Making of a Song". She records herself in the studio and shares a lot with her fans. I love watching people react to stuff like that. I agree with everyone about I Did Something Bad (Reputation Tour version!), and would like to add Don't Blame Me and Cornelia Street/Death By a Thousand Cuts from the Lover in Paris concert. 💙
Taylor would take it as a compliment to be compared to Beyonce. They have a lot of respect for each other as artists and they’re both incredible at what they do.
Totally agree with watching I Did Something Bad and Don't Blame Me live from the Reputation Tour, especially before it comes off Netflix. It's also great timing with the highly anticipated announcement/drop of Reputation (Taylor's Version)!
“He can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor” She’s referring to Richard Burton, a famous actor from the 60s that married Elizabeth Taylor, a famous actress, also known for her heartbreaker ways. They were considered a great love, until she had an affair with Judy Garland’s husband, and they divorced. It’s a really well-crafted lyric once you dig into the subtext. It reminds me a lot of the Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie situation from the early 2000s.
Thanks guys for giving her respect and consideration. It’s clear there are jealous people, all the criticism is jealousy. She paid such respect to the family of the girl that passed away and was very verbal and deeply concerned about the heat wave while she was overseas that she cancelled a show. I don’t think there is any justification to criticize her. She’s kind, caring and always giving back.
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor: one of the greatest and tumultuous love stories of all time. Taylor did a play on words relating herself to Liz Taylor and hinting that the guy she is singing about could be her "Richard". Great reaction, btw! Edit: Does Taylor write her own songs, beats, bars, melodies? The answer is always YES.
She actually works with each producer and makes custom beats to fit the lyrics. Unlike most artists she has the song in mind and makes the beats to the songs opposed to having a beat given to her and make a song around said beat.
I really enjoyed your review of this banger! Sad that so many don’t listen to her music because of pre conceived notions. She’s awesome and sings beautifully.
I was lucky enough to go to her Rep Tour and she was and still is a phenomenal performer. Including writing her own songs and the stage props were so cool!
She usually starts in piano and comes up with the melody. Also the line is, “he can be my jailer, Burton to Liz Taylor. Liz Taylor and Burton were on an off celebrity couple. Very famous. My husband pointed this line out to me which is funny.
I think she says "Burton to this Taylor" but yes, in reference to Burton and Liz Taylor, but she'll have her own. I also just recently catched that and loved the reference. 😊
What you see. What you hear. Every single aspect of the experience is Taylor’s vision. She has a very loyal team that works together with her vision to life. This sets her a part from every other artist out there. She’s playing chess and they are playing checkers: The Beyoncé reference is not wrong. When Taylor released her Eras Tour into theatres Beyoncé was there with her to support. Taylor did the same for Beyoncé when she did the same. They aren’t competitors. They are two women at the top of their game that have absolute respect for one another.
You can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor. It’s about meeting & falling in love with her boyfriend of nearly 7 years Joe. They broke up this year. This intro is FIRE. The first verse is about Joe, younger than my exes but he act like such a man so..,, second verse is about her, a robber stealing hearts and running off and never saying sorry, but if I’m a thief then you can join the heist etc. I did something bad - live AMAs 2018.
Reputation tour is leaving Netflix on Dec 30 this year. She has co-produced on all her albums since her sophomore one. But she selected her producers. One of her original main producers originally just made demos (she met him when she was 14). Although he had a won a SOTY Grammy with his band before they met, the person that she works with mainly (co-produce & co-write) shared that "Taylor's the first person who let me produce a song. Before Taylor, everyone said: 'You're not a producer'. It took Taylor Swift to say: 'I like the way this sounds.'" He now has won Grammy's as a producer as well as a few from other projects. I think also her band members have shared that she is the one who has a hand in the direction & arrangement of her music on tour. She has been headlining since 2009 at age 19- but probably .
You guys gotta do the next song of the concert, I Did Something Bad! Either from the tour or the 2018 AMAs. Soooooo good live. If you do the AMAs it’s important to know it’s her first performance after disappearing for a year after the Kanye deal. And opening night of the rep tour, she invited all of the reporters you hear talking in the beginning to see the show and none of them knew she used their clips for the opening 😅
Taylor might not have been born in the South, but she clearly understands the #1 assignment for women: nurture your grudges until you can serve your revenge.
It was, "He can be my jailer. Burton to _this_ Taylor". It was a play on names/words. Remember Liz Taylor and Richard Burton? (Also, Taylor has always been enamored by Liz and Richard's love affair).
“You can be my jailer” because she said she was a robber. But also because Joe (Alwyn) and Taylor’s names combined would be jaylor which sounds like jailer.
Oh, and she said: "He can be my jailer, Burton to his Taylor..." She's talking about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who were very famous actors from the 1950's onward, who had a mad love affair, got married, got divorced, and got married and divorced again. Taylor Swift has BARS.
She has behind the scenes in the studio for a lot of her songs. Including her reputation songs. They can be found by just searching Taylor swift making of song
You don’t have to be concerned about the comparison with Beyoncé. Beyoncé came to the premiere of her release of the Eras Tour in theaters & in turn Taylor went to Beyoncé’s premiere in London. They are very supportive of each other. In regards to the production of her music. She’s involved with all of it. There are videos showing her working to capture the different & unique sounds you hear mixed in. The same with her show. She has a vision & great people to help make it a reality.
She said Burton to this Taylor. She is referring to a very famous hollywoood relationship in the past. Elizabeth Taylor was a famous actress married to a famous guy with the last name Burton
Taylor has recently re recorded all her old songs as her old record sold the rights behind her back but some legal clause was it was not he music not lyrics! Her music videos have lots of visual references to her lyrics too which helps :)
It's "Burton to this Taylor" as in Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor
It’s such a great line IYKYK but a lot of younger people will have no idea,😊 such a great line!!!!
@@LA-fz5qwFR! I didn’t know but my husband pointed this line out to me 😂. I was like, “WHAT” 😂😂 he surprised me.
One of her most brilliant lyrics. Genius!
"You can be my jailor, Burton to this Taylor" 🙂
Ditto
never forget she invited the whole press that talked shit about her to the first night of the tour
Yeah she’s proving them all wrong!
And sat them in the first row!
How many showed up?
I didn’t know that!!! SAVAGE

Came here to say this
I lost my mind when I heard this lyric. Just brilliant.
You should totally do I Did Something Bad live reputation tour, and Don’t Blame Me live from the reputation tour! They are absolutely incredible live
Fantastic Suggestion ❤❤❤
Love them all!
Yes!! You have to do that song!
YES!!!
Yes! This 💯!!!

Her "CO producers" - Taylor also is a producer on I think all of her songs for at least the last 10 years.
involved in every part of her career. tours is all her idea.
Yes, both Taylor and Beyonce have a great live presence. That is why they are on top for a long time.
He said don’t hate me…as if 95% of Swifties don’t love and respect Beyoncé. They both wear crowns.
She does it ALL... even the beat... It's all HER creativity.

She's always 🔥
“You can be my jailer” because she said she was a robber. But also because Joe (Alwyn) and Taylor’s names combined would be jaylor which sounds like jailer.
i jumped when i saw yall was reacting to this! lol
Tay and Bey are friends both phenomenal.
"And he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor" refers to the tumultuous relationship between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
Yes, those are her beats. she writes all her songs.
Burton to this Taylor…reference to Elizabeth Taylor and one of her loves Richard Burton
'He can be my jailer. Burton to this Taylor' Its a reference to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

It's an Burton and Elizabeth Taylor line... He can be my jailer Burton to this Taylor... She's got bars for days yo... Lol
You guys gotta do the rep tour song don't blame me! Her vocals are insane. All the swifties say "take me to church!"
The lyrics you were askinf about were "he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor", eluding to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
Taylor has recently re recorded all her old songs as her old record sold the rights behind her back but some legal clause was it was not he music not lyrics! Her music videos have lots of visual references to her lyrics too which helps :)
