• Seeding Your Tank Ecol...
in a recent video we examined water from 3 different sources, with the hopes of kickstarting or jumpstarting the micro Diversity or micro flora and fauna within a new aquarium. Specifically we took samples intentionally rich in algae, bacteria, cyanobacteria, microorganisms and mycofauna such as daphnia, cyclopse, seedshrimp snails and gammarus scuds, in hopes of diversifying the biology and ecology of our planted fish tanks in order to find greater balance and health for our fish and nitrogen cycles. check out what happened to our resurrection jars after just a week!

Hey my dude, can you speak on your microscope footage setup? I'd love to have a look at my microfauna without spending $Texas.
@CatFish107 it's a analog 1976 "skope school kit' and I got it for 100 from a middle school that was closing... but it does need a a new 800 and or 1000x lens.
Then the rig is called a camera or phone holster and was 20 or 30 bucks online.... that's all there is to it :)
@Fishtory that's great news! Thank you very much. I was uncertain of that approach, but you show off good results with it!
@@Fishtory keep it up, helping us all learn together. Engagemometrics boost!

Sorry for crowding the comments.
First of all I am now a member 🎉
20 South African Rands equal 1$.
A loaf of bread costs about half a dollar.
So a membership equals R 400.
It was a gift from my hubby 😊.
The question for today :
Do any of the living creatures in fresh water produce methane?
Thanks for making every episode stimulate us to think and sort through the content. 😊
Totally do the timelapse on the water samples. We would love to see that.
When I’m in a bad mood and dont have energy for anything else, I come to your channel to become happier again. Thank you for this!
So nice of you to say. This warms my heart! Thank you so kindly
I love the fifth element! Awesome video Alex. Always a joy 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would love to see those experiments you are so intelligent!
Oh cool I appreciate you too, friend
God bless you
My guess what happened to the lake water is due to overpopulation of microorganism in it. When a water is taken from lake ecosystem into a bottle, it becomes an Unstable ecosystem. The other 2 bottles probaably will reach the same fate if given enough time. Very interesting experiment, keep it up.
Hi Alex.. I say Do the experiment again, and this time in Glass bottles !! Plastic is infamous for not being a stabile element.. Keep up with doing the interesting things.. :D
Very true
I'd love to see more about filamentous algae! I am currently dealing with this in one of my tubs and I was so confused that it seemed big and diffuse in the morning but small in the evenings. So lucky to have stumbled on this. I was perplexed!
Isn't that wild? I'm trying to find research on it. I find lots on single cell algae and on cyanobacteria but so far I can't find anything on movements in filamentous algae... it must be behind some pay wall or something lol because I refuse to believe someone hasn't studied it
That lilac hue is what rivers near me look like. I think theres lots of minerals dissolved in them to create the colour.
Aziz light! I love that movie!
You beat me to it, 😂 I laughed as soon as he said it.. love the Fifth Element
@@zeb33369 Same here!
Love this.
Glad to hear it :) thank you
Great upload, Alex 👌
Thanks ✌️
Very cool! I have been checking my ponds water lately. I put some fiddler crabs in an aquarium outside and noticed aquatic mites in the water from them!
Keep up the good work Alex.
Thanks, will do!
Hi Alex, thank you for all the videos and info you share. I’m glad to see that you’re taking better care of yourself. Congrats on your success and congrats on love fam. Love makes the world work at your 💯. Keep it up man… God loves you Brother
Thank you ! appreciate your thoughtful words first and foremost
Helpful tips ❤
Hi Alex, it's great to see this experiment in the freshwater realm. In the reef scene, the belief was that it is always better to pull real live ocean rock, but it was shown pound for pound. Live rock from a seasoned tank was more beneficial than ocean rock to kick start a new reef tank
@seannunes2041 whoa thanks for sharing... I guess it makes sense and translates to fresh too
great experiment!! Hope you can do the timelapse and also microscope video's on what is becoming of the bottles!
Really strange that the bottle of the lake did not do well. Indeed maybe to much critters/worms in a closed system.
Thank you for another great and informative video, Alex. It was amazing.
I haven't been around and am not a member anymore because finances, but I hope to reinstate my membership as soon as I can. You're one creator who has helped me in leaps and bounds!
I have two aquariums, one is a smaller shrimp tank and another is a community tank. I had moved a number of my shrimp into the community tank because all the fish's mouths are too small to eat adult shrimp. There had to be at least 100 cherry shrimp in that tank after a while. They were thriving....until I put the home made fertilizer tabs which I had purchased under the plants. I killed all my shrimp and perhaps the nerite snails (I haven't looked for them yet). Not a sign of a shrimp anymore! I think those tabs were loaded with copper. I feel so badly! I didn't even think about it until I notied not a shrimp in sight!
It seems the Aquarium Co op Easy green has no copper. I use it in my little shrimp tank and all is well there.
I don't remember if you ever made a video about the dangers of copper with shrimp.
All best wishes always!
It looks like the lake water is showing how polluted the lake actually is. I had a sample from a local creek turn stagnant on me after a couple of days, same thing. The creatures died and the water was just basically sewage to some degree.
@@just-phillip7577 definitely could be.

Thanks my friend.
So Glad to hear it. Cheers
All of this is great to see!
could the algae movements be the algae trying to maximize photosynthesis by making itself darker or some other self-regulating mechanism pretty damn cool!
I think so! I'm researching all that now
Bro I did the same thing with an insta coffee jar completely sealed and it went from green to crystal clear with a million residents. Not sure what to do with them, it pretty cool
Yeah I'm definitely not putting them in my tank inside...but I may try adding it to a pond and seeing If any if my guppies get ill
Do you think these samples will become anoxic, or will the alge produce oxygen?
Also what about an ammonia spike from all the dying and decaying particles in the water?
This is really interesting 🎉
I think the lake is going anoxic now, and will also see increased ammonia
. But we shall see
Do you think cianobacteria toxicity would kill hydra? Please test for us if you can!
Now my tank has cleared I can see water lice, and shrimp,a worm or two,a strange 3-prong thing. Its All Going On!!!
do you think the blue could be ammonia from decomposition?
No it would have killed the scuds, but I also checked it and nitrates went up to 50ppm but ammonia is still 0
Hello! I just realized you’re local to me here in Seattle. My daphnia cultures keep failing. Can you help me out with some advice and maybe a starter amount to get going again?
Ooohhhh! Alex getting spicy. Love your tubs (sorry. I'm a flirt). ❤
