308 Winchester Hornady Custom Lite SST 125 grain reduced recoil ammo ballistics gel test using a Ruger American with 22 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion, muzzle velocity and impact velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Muzzle velocity is measured using a Garmin Xero C1 Pro Chronograph. Impact velocity is a mathematical estimate.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

And Horady is the reason I use Federal Fusion
Thanks for this test! I'd been eyeing this load, but I'll skip it.
So Barnes is loading a managed recoil .308 with a 110 grain TTSX. It's billed at 3100 fps. I bet that loading would work well on deer sized game while making your .308 kick more like a .243.
I'm wondering how this would function in a semi-auto 308 rifle like the Remington 7400, the Browning BAR, or any of the A-10 type rifles.?.? 🤔
...or any of the other Custom Light loads that are in a caliber that's available in a semi-auto rifle.
I've tried the 130gr. in the 30-06sprg. it's a stout kick.
Great add for Barnes!!😀
It looks like Hornady is trying to emulate 7.62x39 ballistics in the .308 Win by loading a light bullet with a light powder charge. Their choice of bullet is clearly where it failed. If you could find a 125 grain bonded bullet it would probably perform well. I've always understood their SST bullets to be frangible and not recommended for big game. Hopefully they will re-think the idea. Excellent video!
I concur, its not worth taking a chance on deer. To many other good loads and bullets. Hornady struck out with this one.
That’s crazy, thanks for sharing
Gee that looks like our experience with ELD-X in 6.5 Creed. Imagine that crap hitting a rib instead of Gel...
2 wounded deer running 100s of yards requiring finishing shots with Federal 30-30 and you get the picture...
Thanks for sharing this sadness Mason, another great video for us.
You are right on point. It’s like Hornady said, “let’s make a bullet for recoil sensitive folk. Ok, just put less powder!” Well I think this calls for Re-engineering to make that happen. I think Hornady got lazy on this one.
This is the very best channel I've found you keep them short and do velocity, penatration with tape measure I wish you could get your hands on maybe borrow 1873 44-40 with winchester hunting loads 200gr jsp,358 caliber, 348 caliber, 375 winchester these calibers are hard to find videos on but they are great rounds to me😮. Keep up the good work your great 👍.
The Whiteclaws of .308 Winchester loads?
If someone likes 308 but finds recoil too much, I would think switching to 243 would be a better option.
Does Hornady even do gel tests before they ship a load?
Shot a deer with this but the 30-06 load. 75 yards, bang flop. Full pass through on a small doe
308 is to weak for this load.
It's too weak for this load ballistically? it's almost the same as the 30-06@@tonymills7883
Hornady lying about their velocity? Say it ain’t so… 8:32
😊
See I never understood the "lite" recoil concept. Only because, there are far to many options for calibers that are in fact light recoiling.
Now, I have experimented with my savage 340b in 30-30. For those who may not be aware, it is a bolt action rifle complete with a 3 round box magazine, that is detachable. I hand loaded some 125/130 spritzers. Sierra Game Kings, and pro hunters where what i opted for. Took a nice 3x3 black-tailed buck with it.
A buddy and I went out to sight in his 308. I hand loaded a bunch of 150's for him, my 3030 loads were keeping up with his 308 out to about 250-325 yds before I noticed the bullet drop. His 308 had me beat after that lol. We ran the numbers after, and my 3030 was out performing a 16" ar10. Kinda cool, I think.
I’m going to be doing quite a bit of 30-30 handload stuff at some point on the channel, I’ve got a good pile of lighter 130 grain stuff I’m curious to see how they do against traditional 150s/170s
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather things get spicy quick lol. My favorite powder is leverevolution. I currently load the Hornady 160 gr ftx over 34 gr of leverevolution. My barrel is 22". It's a great load
Hornady 178gr super formance 308 win. ❤
Oh no..I have some of these lites in 7mm-08 for my boys rifle. Hornady usually makes good stuff though. Highly accurate ammo that doesn’t always perform the best in retention . Their handgun xtp line is my 44 mag and 460 favorites:) I can vouch for the efficiency/accuracy of their 460ammo and their 454 casull. Also always love Barnes so accurate and a value for what you get. Good luck hunting this season. You deserve a booner for putting in all this work for us:)
Glad to be of service!
When I go light for caliber in 308, I go for the 110 grain VMax loads screaming 3200 fps. If you truly need lite recoil in 308, perhaps load your own or search for a subsonic load.
I have loaded this bullet for a single shot 30-30 for eastern NC whitetails, roughly the same velocity. Ive only recovered one out of 12-15 deer. Broad side behind the shoulder they exit and the deer either drop on the spot or are dead inside of 40yds. Ranges 50-150 ish yds.
Interesting thing I've found out is that hornady custom lite is typically loaded with v-max bullets but are marked as sst.
I just picked up a box of these and hadn't seen your video on it. So I definitely wouldn't trust this for hunting but if the recoil was nice...Maybe it's good for letting the wife do some plinkin' around.
308 is already for the recoil-sensitive 30-06 crowd 😅
I measured the recoil in my 308 shooting 178 grain bullets and it was 26 foot pounds versus my 30-06 shooting 165 grain loads that was 24 foot pounds….🤷♂️
@@Simon-talks lots of variables, but I can see it under certain circumstances. The 308 Hornady Superformance loads are just shy of 30-06 performance. But I can see where a heavy projectile with less powder can create more drag / back pressure.
@@hoffpbass I didn’t think so either but my shoulder sure did. I shot 30 rounds that day with the 178 grains out of the .308 and had a pretty massive bruise with that 26 foot pounds of recoil. If I shoot 165 grains in both rifles, the 30-06 shoots 75 ft./s faster than the .308 does andrecoils 24 foot pounds while my .308 recoil 22 foot pounds. They are so close in performance. Basically like a 13 year old brother with a 14 year old brother.
When you compromise some things .... Other things also get compromised.
Thats basically 7.62x39, I have barnaul 125gr sp that chrono at 2450, there kinda hot for x39 I've taken some nice mule deer with them, all within 100 yards or less, they performed great, the jackets do tent to separate from the core, but it doesn't matter, great damage and quick kills. Im suprised to see poor performance from hornady projectiles, there usually quite consistent, I do know a lot of people aren't fans of the sst due to their inconsistency.
Looks good to me
Have a 100ct box of 125gr sst's I was gonna handload for my grandsons 308win in a slightly reduced load for deer. After seeing the results of this load I'm not sure my handloads would be any better? Guess I'll load em up fast& hot for yotes, crows,& target rounds. Thanks Lee
If your recoil sensitive or have an injury there are products like a wearable recoil pad that will help with full power rounds. No shame in wearing aids.
I have the 125 loaded for a 30/06 and some 165 also. Im affraid they arent worth the paper box they came in now.
Same performance I get from the 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. They explode at normal velocities.
Honestly last few years hornday has been a bit of a mess , at one point they had a wonderful bullet loaded with inter bond ( bonded ) in heavy magnum and performance loads
Now they focus on explosive stuff like SST & eldx, the cx in 375 ruger has been nearly impossible to find, the inter bond discontinued 😢😢😢, come on hornday pull your head out of your @$$
And offer some good tough bullets for hunting everything from NA game to Africa
Deer to elk , impala to eland
Agreed. I really miss when Hornady was top tier stuff, and not this “Nancy boy, hair gel” crap…
I could be wrong but these loads are even weaker than a 30-30. I understand the need for a load like this, but they really screwed up the velocity. These could and should be easily going 2800fps. And probably need to, to get reliable performance.
Wow!!
I know that the Barnes Vor-Tx that I’m planning on hunting with this year is a different animal, but that 130gr TTSX has me worried now. It is leaving the muzzle at 3200 fps though…
I wonder how the spin doctors will handle this.
They’ll blame Trump
Well then, I've seen all I needed to see. I'll recommend this ammo to people that I don't care for.
I load 125gr 300BLK bullet for my AR-10 to about 2900-3000fps. They are devastating on milk jugs.
Well, I won't be using either this or the critical defense, for defense, even though 2 of the 3 here would put at least a trip to the ER with that fragging on the baddie. To be 200 fps slower than billed is not even acceptable from a 16" barrel. I have never purchased SSTs in any cartridge I shoot. My brother swore by Superformance 95s in his 243, and 140s in his 270, but where we hunt, standard loads have worked for me without fail.
I'm surprised by these results. The terminal ballistics of 125 grain SSTs in several RUclips videos look consistently great coming out of even slower 300 Blackout and the bullet has a great reputation among hunters with that caliber from all I've seen. I expected the slightly higher velocity of the 308 Winchester load to increase expansion and fragmentation if anything.
Yeah I had that in 270 win it was bunk
I feel like you've tested 300 Blackout that out performs this possibility, even in 125 grain. I can't remember though. Regardless, good info.
Id say if bump velocity up to about 2800 it would probably perform much better. As is its junk
You would be amazed at how many times I have been (figuratively) beaten on and about the head and ears for complaining about inconsistent and even nonexistent performance from Hornady rifle ammo that I have tried. I would not call it awful necessarily, but there are so many better choices available to Joe or Jane Hunter. And don't get me riled up over their handgun stuff!!!
Disappointing. My daughter was working in the kitchen listening to this vid while I was watching it. She got so tickled about your response. "So tell me what you really think" she said. Appreciate the tests & results.
Well that’s disappointing. Thanks for posting.
Bit of a mystery how hornady test. Some cartridges go faster than factory spec, some are abysmal. The euro loads are more accurate
Acts like x39 not x51
So it either fragments or tumbles at a very modest speed. I've never been able to bring myself to use any 30 cals from Hornady lighter than 150. Seems like this is a sound decision.
The SST is frangible and it does not matter if it is the managed recoil or not. Just not well publicized by Hornady
Straight from the product page: “The Hornady® SST® (Super Shock Tip) is designed to deliver tremendous shock on impact while expanding quickly and reliably, particularly at higher velocities.”
Nowhere is it designated as frangible. If it was, this would be an even bigger fail. It could be argued that it is “partially” frangible based on the verbiage in the ad copy, it is more arguable that it is supposed to expand and mostly hold together based on the same ad copy, particularly “…expanding quickly and reliably,” “expanding” is not “frangibility,” especially when paired with “reliably.”
If you're recoil sensitive why would you grab a 308 when you could have a 300blk?
It seems like maybe that bullet on the right might have passed through the cavity of one of the other bullets.
You can clearly see the three bullet paths are separate and distinct. Additionally, the chance that happens is approaching zero.
Don't know much about a can on your rifle do they cause lower velocity? Great vid!
They actually increase velocity slightly
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather interesting
Reduced recoil loads in .308 or .30-06 caliber cartridges are mostly intended for short range deer hunting. If you want them to work right, you need to use a load that duplicates .30-30 loads with bullets engineered for .30-30 and its velocity. A Hornady 150 grain round nose Interlock .30-30 bullet at an honest 2300 FPS will take deer just fine out to 200 yards. Handloaders have been doing this type of load for many decades for kids, wives, girlfriends, and sore shoulder hunting buddies. Why the makers have to kick something fancy out the door instead of absolutely proven loads is beyond me. Stop marketing and start loading what has worked for decades.
Why is my comment about 6.5 Creed gone
So it's a 7.62×39 now. Woopty do.
Mason when you do these tests do you every question the ammo company about your results
No, I report my objective results, that’s as far as I care to go with it.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleatherMuch appreciated, pard.
Try closer shot maybe 50 instead of 100. Know it is lite recoil/power the trade of is shorter range?
100 yrds is short range
@awsomedude12345678 yea I know 100yrds is nothing but still a good test to try if it preforms better maybe it would be better suited for self defense 🤷♂️ throwing idea at a wall to see if anything sticks
@Dm87509 well based on the results moving in to 50 yrds would probably work and give you the classic cup and core bullet expansion. However that is severely limiting
Probably would work as a home defense round as well.
Great of you to try to make lemonade out of a lemon but you can buy much better ammo for that same price
@@awsomedude12345678 Many magazines have done extensive polling. A super majority of deer are killed inside 50 yards. So it would be a viable idea to try. I've loved the performance of the sst out of a 2506 and a 270 in superformance ammo. I'm not an expert but perhaps that bullet needs intense velocity.
The velocity loss between 0 and 100 yards isn’t enough to make these results acceptable at any range and it would be extremely unlikely to be of material difference even at closer range.
Just not enough juice to get the job done!
I lost trust with the sst years ago
Low recoil, hunting deer? 25-06 120gr Nosler Partitions, 3000+ fps. Nuf said!
You can turn your .308 into a 357 mag with this stuff. 😂
Odd performance.
I get 2350fps with the same bullet from a 300blk
Tell us what you really think. LOL
That is the absolute WORST performance I've ever seen for a factory 308 load. TOTAL GARBAGE, TOTAL FAILURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a disappointment
As a load very likely to be used by youth or inexperienced hunters... this kind of performance runs a big risk of making a for an unpleasant experience... not good at all for bringing new hunters into the sport...
Again 308 is weak for a load like this.
Junk
