I bet it felt like sitting on top of the world with that huge canopy and to have it open while landing is so neat. Still one of my all time favorite jets. BTW, Fujimi makes a wonderful kit of this jet and definitely worth buying if you're into model building.
5:48 - I ran this crash at 1.5x.speed.on my RUclips player. That brings the film up to more or less real time speed. The crash and subsequent fire looks so much more violent in real time. Give you an idea of the kinds of dangers these flight deck crew face.
If this planes three main problems were fixed sooner, she probably would have been a good fighter. The three problems were the tall nose wheel strut, underpowered engines, and faulty hydraulic system.
Labding and flying and even taxiing that plane must be like sitting on the edge of a cliff, and trying to steer that cliff.... on an aircraft carrier. Nothing in front of you, and you are WAY high up
6:50 and onwards the guys standing on the edge react a little slow. But a cameraman is pretty quick. He's hugging the hull and does not appear to have protective gear, certainly has no headgear. As the disaster moves closer the cameraman is engulfed in flames. On another channel it was noted the only casualty was the pilot. I don't think so. Back then guys usually slicked back their hair with some tonic or grease that was flammable to add to the injuries.

My Dad flew this aircraft. Said it was the only airplane that scared him.
One beautiful aircraft. Jerry
Is that sound in the background the USS Hancock in cruise?

What happened to the LSO?
Like the Chevy Corvair: Unsafe at any speed.
They all have their canopy partially open , is this because they where so dangerous to make a easy escape ?

With all that PURRRRING I was sure this was the Kitty Hawk :-)
last pilot was fired.
The "Cutlass" was known throughout the Navy as "The Ensign Eater!"
One can only hope the pilot ejected : I noticed the canopy eject, but did not see the pilot
