Muzsikas are a major discovery for me. They're so authentic and yet so knowledgeable that you get the impression that advanced musicology had been part of the folklore for centuries before Bartok was born.

Bartok was no genius, actually. In reality, on one of his many journeys around the Hungarian countryside he came across one of Mr Porteleki's or Hamar's ancestors who told him: "you won't find no jewel in this mud, you need to combine folk melodies with modern harmonies. Have you been thinking of writing a piano concerto?"
I'm sure that's the truth about what Bartok found while doing his ethnographic research.
