A bit of timeline for you: Ren started playing guitar at 8 (self-taught off of RUclips), and started making beats not long after. He couldn't find anyone to rap over his beats, so he taught himself to do that, as well. He started busking in his teens, and for a bit he attended Bath Spa University, studying musical performance. During this time he was in a group called Trick The Fox. In his late teens he was signed to Sony, but became too sick (at about 20) to pursue that. He spent most of his early twenties in bed, but making music as much as he could. He put out his album Freckled Angels in 2016. After receiving stem cell transplants at 26, he had more energy and returned to living and busking in Brighton, both solo and as a member of The Big Push. They became very popular online, and are known as the world's most famous busking band. (They have an album out, as well.) Ren recorded most of Sick Boi in 2021-22, before moving to Calgary for intensive treatment to address lingering effects of the Lyme disease, and remains there right now, going to clinic every day(for a few months yet, he said recently).
Ren's on bass for this one and is brilliant, as always. Ren plays about a dozen instruments well. Half of them RIDICULOUSLY well! All self-taught too! He did receive some cello lessons but that's the sole exception. :)
My favorite moment is when someone figures out that Ren can sing sing and more! Loved that here❤ The only bad thing about The Big Push is that they are no longer together...but I think fate will fix that one day🙏🤞
All 3 guitarists sing and sometimes swap guitars as they are busking. This is why Gorran was changing the strap. There is another session where they play watch out (an original song) I shot the sheriff/road to zion and hip hop,war pigs and paint it black. Ren is wearing red braces(not suspenders as everyone outside the UK keeps calling them). Then watch an English man in new York, bongo bongo, swan song, it's alright and girls. That should get you started, finally watch the tales of jenny and screech a 13 minute masterclass of story telling by Ren 👍
Ren's musical story is as follows (i may screw some of this up). Ren started out playing guitar and producing beats as a kid, probably about 12 years old. Taught himself both by watching RUclips. At first, he was just doing these drum and bass/electronic/hip hop tracks on cassette tapes and trying to sell them at festivals and stuff. He only started singing and rapping because he lived in a tiny little village on a little island off the coast of North Wales, and there was nobody else who was rapping or singing to work with. His mom was a music teacher, but Ren has said he could never take lessons from her, and taught himself everything by watching RUclips. After high school, he briefly attended a music university in Bath, England but that's when he got sick, and only attended for part of one term. At around that time (early 2010s), he was part of a indie pop band called Trick The Fox with another musician called Charley Fowler and a series of different drummers. He and the band were signed to Sony at the time, and recorded some tracks, but Ren kept getting so sick that he and Sony agreed to void the contract, but the A&R/Producer guy he was working with, Eric Appapoulay, did let Ren keep all his recordings. He got REAL sick around 2015 and spent most of the next several years in bed and mostly out of his mind. When he was lucid enough to work, he was able to take some of the Truck the Fox tracks, record a few more, and he put that out as the Freckled Angels album. He finally got some good disgnoses and treatments around 2017, and was good enough to start doing more music. He and Romain kinda knew each other from busking around the Brighton scene, and they became roommates when they both broke up with their girlfriends and each need somewhere to stay. They formed The Big Push with Gorran, another Brighton based busking musician, and later added Glenn on drums (i think originally Ren was the drummer and Glenn was a bass player, but they were each better on the other instrument, so they soon swapped). They busked for several years, recorded some singles and one EP (Can Do Will Do), and when COVID happened they couldn't work with Glenn anymore, but the other three were living in the same flat, so they kept putting out stuff as a 3-piece. After lockdown ended, Glenn rejoined, and they stayed together until late 2022 when Ren had to go to Canada for treatment.
Yes The Big Push was a band that Ren was a member of, they broke up in 2022 when Ren went to Canada for his treatments, two other members besides Ren have done solo work since. As for Jenny and Sceeech. do the 13 minute "Full Version" as it has all 3 Tales in the right order.
You literally can't go wrong with anything from the Big Push - there is not one bad performance or song in their catalog. All 4 of them are super talented and the chemistry between then is so infectious and a joy to watch. Plenty of covers and lots of original songs too - fill your boots.
Ah, good to see you deviating from the Sick Boi album. Don't get me wrong, The LP is really good, but it's really a fun hip-hop project. There's so much more to his game. His live stuff with Chinchilla, Eden Nash and Sam Tompkins is out of this world. Cheers
Ren can beatbox! He is self taught from watching you tube videos on - drums, guitar, bass and piano, raps, produces, directs and writes his own material ❤
When I was in my 20s, I was best friends with a couple guys in a band, and nothing I loved more than just hanging out with them at their house and listening to them jam!
Thanks! Glad you listened to his former band. Ren is a rapper, singer songwriter, producer storyteller & director. Ren has been combining Rap with his music from the beginning of his career. He started making beats at 12.
Great story on how you learned to appreciate a good jam session 😊 The Big Push is so, so good .. their entire catalog is good, so anything you watch, you will enjoy. They do covers, but they also have a lot of original material and it's all great. They do everything, from jazz to rock... You will not be sorry for checking them out 😊😊😊
Ren obviously loves all music & is a music historian & plays multiple instruments. The band consisted of Ren, Gorran Kendall, who sings on this one, Romain Axisa, who plays the guitar solo on this one but he also sings, & Glenn Chambers on drums. These guys busked on the streets of Brighton for about 5 years. They became so popular that eventually they would announce when/where they were going to perform & the police would come & close the street because hundreds of people would show up. They also did a multi-city tour in UK.
The Big Push is another fantastic rabbit hole to fall down. Their music is incredible and all the members are individually so talented. Others to check out include I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (red suspenders version), War Pigs, Englishman in New York, Praise You, Swan Song, Precious, and many many more. The other members, Gorran and Romain also have some individual releases that are work checking out as well. Really enjoyed your reaction ❤❤
'What kind of woman is this' is another performance which really highlights the unique voices of the band. Also please check out their performances of sympathy for the devil rolling stones cover and war pigs black Sabbath cover❤❤❤
Ren is music. He can (and does) it all! He was in this band with his friends and they made their living by busking (playing in the street for donations). They broke up because he had to move to Canada for medical treatment. He decided to do a rap album just for fun. He's said his next album will be back to his roots with guitar and singing. I'm here for it all!
So, the Big Push is a band that Ren was a member of. He's not like the leader or in charge or anything, it's just a band, and he's one of the members. The members are Ren, Romain Axisa, Gorran Kendall, and Glenn Chambers. Glenn is the drummer, Gorran is the long haired guy, Romain is the guy in the black hat. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all sing lead and backing vocals, and play all kinds of instruments depending on the song.
Also, if you watch more of the Big Push, you will see at all three of the guitarists can play any guitar (bass or lead or rhythm) and all three are great vocalists. They take turns with some songs Ren sings, some Romaine sings, and some Gorran sings. They are like the Beatles to me. All super talented with great chemistry.
The 3 front men here luved togethet during covid lockdowns, but Ren and Romain the bkack guitar were roomates for 6 years. The Big Push was together for 5 years 2017 to 2022. Yill Ren eent to Canada. Gorran went traveling to Europe and Romain started doung great solo stuff. Glen tbe drummer got married and stsrted an IT career
It's called Busking ( Steeet performance ) in Britain 🇬🇧. The Busking scene in Brighton was / IS fantastic. Some of the Musicians Singers are Fantastic in their own Right.
Ren is playing the bass in this particular video, but with a pick (electrical bass guitar, but you would talk about him playing a bass not guitar). These are soul/gospel-songs, but you mentioned jazz, and I'm not surprised, because his singing style often has this jazz elements, in how his vibrato is and how his vocal phrasing is and sometimes he also starts scatting.
The Big Push is a band. Ren, Gorran Kendall is the other one who sang in this, Romaine Axisa is the guitar soloist in this one, and Glenn Chambers is on the drums. Romaine recently released his first album, and it's quite different. But it is so good!
Check out some of Romain Axisa music on his channel. He is wearing a beret, black print pants, he is French. Fantastic guitarist. Also singer, songwriter, my favorite is his "75 Beats Per Minute" instrumental, no lyrics. Just stunning.

They then decided to become a band and would take to the streets of Brighton and also created masterpieces of their own. I speculate the bass is too high, and needs to be lower for Ren to play more comfortably. His band mate is swapping out the strap. They sometimes switched instruments. Could be someone else was playing it earlier in the set. I call this blues. Wish there were more of it!
