Unlikely, on russian youtube there aren't lessons how to play vibrato on flute. So that I must find this information on english youtube. Thank you for your english. You're speaking so slow and it's easy for me to understand what you're speaking.
I was practicing one of the songs we're playing in band and there's one part where a vibrato would sound amazing with it and I tried this technique and I didn't know my teacher was listening in until he commented on it behind me! So thank you!!!
I'm learning to play the flute. My band teacher told me to look up vibrato. This really helped me. I don't get why people think it sounds pretty. This is how I sound when I play the flute when I'm nervous.
Omg! Thank you for this extremely beneficial video! My private lesson teacher attempted to try and teach me but I ended up have a nanny goat vibrato .. YOU'RE A LIFE SAVIOR!
I've watched so many lessons and I kept wondering where or how they got that vibration sound in their notes. For a moment I though maybe I was playing the notes wrong. This helped me alot. Thankx!!!
I have been wanting to learn vibrato for ages and now I can use it to improve my grade 6 pieces to make them seem more to standard and professional x Thank you :)
Thanks. I'm taking a class on music history, and the teacher said to listen for the nanny goat vibrato in a song sample. I had no idea what a vibrato was, let alone a nanny goat vibrato. Thanks for clarifying that.
I just got a tin whistle and am learning the basics! I learned how to play the titanic theme song from one of your other videos and learned a lot just in that one reel! today I'm going to watch your video on vibrato! before I started though I'd like to thank you for sharing your talent and teaching!
@dannyrambo1 - (part 2) - While developing the skill, I found it most helpful to train my muscles by blowing each burst as strongly as possible. With such force, your entire upper body should shake with each burst. For singing, add the vocal cord vibration (known as vocalizing). Again, while developing, focus REALLY hard on making these strong bursts as short and fast as you can for 15 second runs. (With such deep concentration, you'll feel like you're going crazy trying to go faster & faster.)
@dannyrambo1 - (part 4) - (2) "Nanny Goat" vibrato has it's uses, particularly for contemporary singers, and I've heard many flautists use it to great effect, particularly during quick runs. I actually call this the "Hihihi" vibrato; I only learned to do it after noticing that the mechanics of a friend's quick "hihihi" laugh sounded like it might be the key. This one moves the focus to letting the force of air more automatically open and close the cords, as when someone does a "hihihi" laugh.
when you do a low vibrato it comes from you stomach more as its a lower pitch but you do use you throat as you pass air through it lol and with high vibrato you use more of your chest and throat as its lighter and more upper in the body, any higher notes and you'd be using your head voice and also your throat, using your head voice means you have to slighty open your throat abit more to get a higher pitch:) hope this helps
This video was lovely! I am relearning the flute after a Severe TBI, and my vibrato is a mess. Possibly part of the problem is I never learned it correctly? However, with your informative video, let's hope I can figure out how to do it properly! (Ps: I'm pretty sure I've never been able to vibrato very quickly, so learning the nanny goat method might actually be an accomplishment!) Have a brilliant day :)
While of course it’s the stomach or diaphragm muscle supporting the air, it is indeed the throat pulsing slightly to form vibrato, Just as yours did in all of your vibrato demonstrations when you were actually playing the flute
@dannyrambo1 - (part 3) - This is something that you should do as often as you can while developing. I actually recommend you add it to your daily practice routines. Apart from the strong bursts for developing, lessen the force, and lower the speed and smoothness between the bursts to taste for normal practice or performance. (Rapid speed during development is for gaining muscle control.) Add vocalization for singing or play your instrument.
well cool video i got a flute 4 weeks ago but have been playing recorder for some time took a while to get the little finger action down still working on it actually putting the little finger on the lever whilst bringing the e finger up is quite hard especially when its a new skill. i know now why the little finger has to be placed on the lever if you dont the flute is just balanced on your thumbs and is likely to fall off your hands
Ms. Urie is correct in her explanation, (refer to Trevor Wye's excellent flute method books for more information). If you like it, do it her way, if not, you can "oscillate the folds in your larynx", whatever that means. Vibrato on the flute is simple and natural, and it does indeed involve the diaphragm. Maybe gpburr is thinking about singing, not flute playing.
thanks so much!! this has helped me really really well!!! I think I've mostly got it down on the lower notes, like from the lowest C to the middle C, but it's harder when you get higher to keep it going and not go sharp or flat. Or at least I find. But anyways thank you!!!!
YAY!!!!! Now my solo will go better I just couldn't get the vibrato right but knowing me and my terrible stage fright I will probably mess up... But thanks
Hey, thanks for this! I've been trying to figure out how classical flutists do vibrato. I've read a few things, but always have an easier time if I can see/hear demonstrations. As an Irish flutist and tin whistle player, I'm used to creating vibrato with my fingers. Since I've picked up the Chinese dizi I've found the need to learn breath vibrato as well, since most dizi players seem to use both finger and breath vibrato. Anyhow, lovely stuff.
Can you please make a tutorial on how to play ''pan flute ''?!.. ps. you're such a professional . And I like the fact that you enjoy what you're doing :)
Excellent tutorial, nice to see someone teaching vibrato from first principles, what about teaching people to anchor onto the first four of each bar to help them align it? always helped me on guitar :)
If I use my stomach it makes me feel queasy and it's quite hard to control. What am I doing wrong? I can make the vibrato with a guttural half-stop (I wasn't formally trained so this is what I figured out on my own), is it especially wrong to do that?
@dannyrambo1 - (Part 1) - It seems that it is natural (comes without effort or practice) for some fortunate ones. I, like you it seems, was not born so lucky. There are probably actually several types of vibrato, but there seem to be two that are most mainstream: (1) The diaphragm-based vibrato which Elizabeth demonstrates in this video. My recommendation: Pretend you are blowing out candles on a cake giving short, strong bursts of air for each candle separately in rapid succession.
Put simply kids your amp is your diaphragm, you shape the outlet of air with your mouth and lips as you pronounce lyrics. To achieve higher notes you need more support from your diaphragm (more air) but this is MOST important as you go high your vocals will close off restricting air giving you that squeeky sound and sore throat. So as you go higher open your mouth wide...not just the "O" shape but open your mouth as wide as you can as if to bite the biggest apple. Voila Bel Canto.
I have always found it simpler to explain as a shivering exhale. At some point this becomes completely instinctive, and so the forced expression of vibrato or tremolo comes without thought for the mechanics. In reference to your nanny goat vibrato, tremolo is a used and desirable expression in some pieces.
my vibrato used to suck until my flute teacher emily taught me her and she said it would sink in so i was sitting on the couch watchin tv and all of sudden i was like lightbulb now i do the most amazing vibrato in the band
lol.. Just tried it. "hoo hoo hoo" makes it easier for thought in playing.. Another technique which my friend taught, to empty lungs entirely and play any note and breath(blow) starts shaking as you're out of air. Once you realise how your breath is shaking, you can do it with whatever air inside your lungs.
Just wanted to say that "opening your throat" introduces tension. Alexander technicians will often say not to use this kind of verbage when describing how to play, because you can only do one thing with your throat - close it. When relaxed, the throat is at its most open, so if you just "play" you already have an open throat and don't need to think about this aspect.
@sn3192 For me, it seems that if I think about it, or put too much conscious into it, the less effective the natural singing quality is apparent. With singers, they just feel it. Remember, vibrato is an expression of feeling or emotion. Our two opposing brain hemispheres conflict with one another when we put to much logic or systemic thinking into our emotional or expressional selves. I would suggest listening to all of the great modern singers as much as possible ie;Whitney, Mariah,Celine etc.
I'm very confused, when i look up how to do a vibrato some say from your stomach and other say from your chest or throat, is it more of preferred thing that you have to find yourself? Which one sounds and feels the best for you?
Unlikely, on russian youtube there aren't lessons how to play vibrato on flute. So that I must find this information on english youtube. Thank you for your english. You're speaking so slow and it's easy for me to understand what you're speaking.
Do germans speak very fast?
Why Russians have their own youtube?
I remember playing a solo on my flute and my breath was shaking because I was so nervous. Would that count as vibrato?
no
Neko Kat same I do it in band all the time when playing on my own
yeah it does, jk sorry lol
it does, but often a slower vibrato is better.
Yes me dear, this is the best techinque.
I was practicing one of the songs we're playing in band and there's one part where a vibrato would sound amazing with it and I tried this technique and I didn't know my teacher was listening in until he commented on it behind me! So thank you!!!
THANK YOU! I have watched about six vibrato tutorial videos and this one has explained it the best!! I'm finally catching on now! 💛

I'm learning to play the flute. My band teacher told me to look up vibrato. This really helped me. I don't get why people think it sounds pretty. This is how I sound when I play the flute when I'm nervous.

Loved the nanny-goat simulation! Very helpful. Trying to develop vibrato on my oboe and English Horn. I’m sure same principles apply. Thanks!
Thanks. I'm taking a class on music history, and the teacher said to listen for the nanny goat vibrato in a song sample.
I had no idea what a vibrato was, let alone a nanny goat vibrato. Thanks for clarifying that.

Thank u soooo much. We had a test in band the next day and if we didn't do virbrado we would get moved to last chair. #savedmylife
If I use my stomach it makes me feel queasy and it's quite hard to control. What am I doing wrong?

What's your problem with "nanny goat" vibrato? It actually takes skill and can sound pretty epic of you do in the right places
+Kieran J.C. your right is a delicate color and style thats used for specific things. but we cant let the goat run wild
The Flute Channel They'll eat all the grass.
either it might be a tremolo
I am going to post a nanny goat vibrato so she'll come after me ...
linda essa mulher é linda eu ja vejo ele tocar ha anos e adoro a empolgação com que ele faz isso
this is insane!!!its work!!!
i started this instrument and im already really good
Good for you! You must be a natural at flute. I wish I was amazing at flute but I'm only average.
If I was learning how to play the flute, I would want you to be my teacher.

Muy buena clase, y que linda que eres!

Thank you for your time and expertise! Would this same technique apply to my Native American Flute vibrato?
