Wow, never knew whales got their fluids from the animals they eat. Thought they had some sort of process of extracting water through a filter system. Amazing how much you can learn even when a 30 years old man
Wow . What an excellent piece of short documentary about Pilot Whale . People who see Dolphins , Orcas , Whales etc. perform at the Aquarium for the crowd feel bad for the aquatic animals because they think the animal is trapped and needs freedom . Although some part of it is true , but many don't know that some aquatic animals like the Pilot Whale - Sully cannot go back to the wild because they can't use echolocation to hunt for their food . This makes them dependent on someone to feed them for the entire life . Mr. Jonathan Bird , I have learnt so many things about the Blue World from you and I really thank you for documenting the life of Sully for us .
Dat Boi No they did not care good enough for him. Because when sully was still were he stranded they used a special suncream to cover his skin however sealive did not do this and also provided no suncover
And they said that animals are dumb. Sully played the system and won! He has his own place, he no longer has to hunt for his food, he has waiters and waitresses to feed him and he has 3 women to rub him down everyday. Sully is living it up.
I’m telling you this right now guys, sea world is no fun place to keep whales in small pond. You know, have you watched that documentary film called, “Black fin?”
Know what, credit where it's due: Sea world took him in and cared for him. Now we watch Black Fish and hate SeaWorld. I'm not against dolphins performing, but let them because they want to not because they have too. Put the animals first. Id personally just be happy seeing these animals, they don't need to perform for me. Glad to see that SeaWorld does do SOME good atleast
@@kristianxoto Not necessarily it really depends but in this case certainly. I'd guess that a big factor here is that dolphins don't. make a kill collectively to share but rather hunt their own prey which they eat immediatly. They might employ team strategies but if you can't catch your food you are out of luck.
The animals love to do behaviors, my family member was a trainer at sea world and as soon as fans would fill the seats the Orcas and dolphins would be waiting at the gates eager to perform and do behaviors it’s also enriching for them. As you can tell all of these dolphins orcas in pilot whales are fat and healthy. They can’t be forced to do anything, I have gone to shows at sea world where they tell the people sorry the whales want to take a day off today and then there’s other days where they can’t wait to get out and perform so, I think it would be more cruel and they were just floating around in a tank doing nothing
reall? the didnt kill him he died. 'SCCN had consulted with SeaWorld San Diego veterinarian Dr. Tom Reidarson about Sully’s care, so it was probably a forgone conclusion that Sully would wind up there if the release attempts failed because SeaWorld was actively engaged in trying to get a male pilot whale at that time. @@ericlunger1010 Sully did not die of sunburn, but of degenerative hepatopathy, essentially his liver had waaay to much fat deposits and caused it to shut down. Nothing to do with sunburn, at all.
There is nothing wrong with animals being shown off to the public. They are getting their exercise in and being physically and mentally stimulated. For us it’s shows are entertaining. For the animals it’s an enjoyable experience in which they are stimulated each and everyday.
@@migglej.r.7667 There is everything wrong with it if that is the animals entire life.... The animals agree; given how many become aggressive in captivity. There is value in the interaction and they are initially stimulated but it is not a proper environment there will inevitably be problems. In the right situation it can work; like with ambassador animals where they are occasionally shown off and then go back to a more natural environment; but that is still dependent on temperament and willingness to travel. No animal should live its entire life in such a small relative container; waiting to be shown off every day.

Guys. He may have been waiting for his seasonal pod to come near again. Or until he heard rumor of them on his daily outings offshore! The pod they brought him to most likely was not his family/pod! I think it would have been better for him to let him stay at least a couple years before sending him to Seaworld. Aquariums are beautiful and fine most of the time but I recently saw a "show" on youtube taken from seaworld and the conditions were really bad! I think it was the one in California and I do not know the conditions at the other. But as he was obviously happy where he was if its not broken why try to fix it? He may have been sounding for his pod while going on his daily swim offshore. He may be lost and not know where his pod is. He may simply like the new conditions far more than being alone in the great semi- desert of the open ocean. I think he lost his pod and he then was unable to gain food so easy and became depressed and didn't care to eat without his family/pod. You should have let him stay longer. He no doubt loved the company of another kind and intelligent species. To whales we can be somewhat like gods to them. Then there they are blessing him with unlimited fish. I think they should've let him stay until there was a good reason not to. Plus whales are so intelligent I mean his emotional love towards these people may have become like a new family a new pod to him in which case to send him away would be cruel. For all we know his pod was killed or broken up by storm or evil people etc... Seriously if they had opened up a paypal account online and explained Sully's unique situation you would've gained more than enough money to keep him fed and happy! No! It was California that took him! Not good at all. So he is semi-deaf. Well that explains alot. But I still do not agree with sending him to San Diego. They should've kept him at the original spot started an online donation account to feed him and kept taking him offshore daily.
With all the billions being spent to fight climate change, surely we can find a few millions to support animal sanctuaries around the world for cases like Sully. Sending him to Seaworld's circus wasn't the right answer.
Exactly! Although these people were very compassionate. They went about it completely wrong. I understand hand feeding him for the first few times until he gained some strength back. They really should have released live fish around for him to catch on his own. There was too much human contact and they most definitely should not have taught him to follow boats. He could have gotten his exercises from hunting and chasing his fish. They tamed him, and got him too used to food comi g to him. Of cours he wouldnt go back out in the wild. That being said, in his particular case, with his loss of hearing. It is understandable that he was unable regardless. However, they didnt know that until way later amd still shouldnt have done it the way they did to begin with. As a wildlife rehabilitator, these things are in the tests you take to get your licensing to be able to care for and reintroduce wildlife back into the wild.
@@kathryncastanares525 They did what they could and releasing him back to the wild would have been a death sentence. There’s no need to criticize in this case.
@@kathryncastanares525 umm, they tried releasing him and even looked for a pod for him but Sully himself refused to go back to the wild. I guess you can't really speak for the animals since they also have their own thoughts and feelings about certain things.
A pilot whale can hear up to ONE HUNDRED KILOHERTZ?!?!?! For the sake of simplifying what that means, the highest frequency humans can hear is just shy of TWENTY kilohertz. In the 60's and 70's I couldn't deal with going to department stores like Sears, Hecht Co., etc. Their security systems used a super-high frequency....... like a dog whistle in scream mode. Also VERY interesting is the fact they can dehydrate...... never occurred to me they can't and don't "drink" the water. Great show here...... love the entire whale/porpoise sector of fauna :) Seeing so much handling with bare hands, I recall at Xcaret, Mexico we'd bought a few minutes with a bottlenose dolphin...... of COURSE we're compelled to touch them, but the woman in charge snapped "do NOT TOUCH him!!!!!". Oh..... maybe I need to upgrade my $20 ticket?
Even though intentions were good, I fail to see how removing him from good fresh ocean water of his original home, to a chlorinated small pool was good for him, compared to his original access to open ocean. And if Sea world was willing to shell out for 60 lbs of fish a day, how come they couldn't give that to him in Curaçao? The excuse was made that the original folks couldn't afford to keep feeding him, yet thousands had to be spent flying him to Sea World. Something seems... fishy here.
Not really, if you watch the episode carefully, all that is explained. They did not have the facilities to take care of him in Curacao. The pool at Sea World is not chlorinated...the animals can't be in chlorinated water. Sea World was willing to take him and try to help him. I don't see why everyone wants to make Sea World the bad guy in this. This whale had an inability to catch food because his ears didn't work right and they hunt with echolocation. He was starving to death. He would have died within a few days if he had not been rescued. Once they knew he couldn't ever catch food because of his hearing, they knew he could never be released. And he did not want to be released. He followed the boat home every time. So they could either put him down or try to find a place that would feed him forever. It cost hundreds of dollars a day just to feed him, never mind all the other care. Now we can certainly say that Sea World did something wrong in terms of sun protection, which is really sad because it led to a skin infection. But at least they tried to save him.
My daughter wants to tell you that our dog is named Sullivan. His nickname is Sully. Sullivan and Sully have a lot in common. Sullivan likes to gather up his toys too.
How wonderful that Sully was saved, but how unfortunate he had to go to Sea World and died. If they'd stop ALL animal shows and just focus on animal rescue and rehab they'd get a lot more respect.

Though the media does suggest seaworld treats show animals badly it just depends if you see that for yourself because I don't trust media for all my information I trust experience i'm not saying anyone is wrong i'm just saying don't always believe what media says but just experience something first before judging
Whatever their rehabilitation program consists of, it cannot undo the damage they knowingly did to the Orca in their care. Nothing can ever change that. Sea World COULD choose to work along side scientists to establish sea pens for the Orca and dolphin, and work together to help release their animals. THAT would help rehabilitate their reputation. But, they won't. It's because they bring in $$$. Ergo, they are still motivated by MONEY and not what is truly best for the animals. I call bullshit on that program. And the "media" that you speak of consisted of a documentary made by former SW employees and people who study wild Orca and can tell the natural behavior/happy behavior from misery and self-injury. Orca self-injure at that place. The tanks are too small, they don't get the stimulation they need (performing isn't stimulation for them, it's WORK), they don't get many of their fundamental needs met. Just the basic ones and even then, barely. It's not propaganda, it's truth. So, the only ones lying here is Sea World because they have everything to lose by being honest. If their tourists knew that the animals generally only live to half the age they would in the wild, in captivity, they'd stop supporting that business. If the tourists knew that the animals chew on the concrete of their tanks and wear their teeth down.....and are subject to bullying from the other Orca (who generally get along very well in the WILD), if they knew that the flopped over dorsal fins and the behavior at the parks are so different from the behavior you see in wild Orca.....they'd stop supporting SW. Of course SW is not going to be honest about anything. It would kill their business. And that's what it is. A business. Not a sanctuary, not a rehab. A business and is listed as such on the stock market. Sanctuaries aren't listed on the stock market. Only lucrative, money pulling businesses are. That's their motivation and this smoke and mirrors with Sully is to try and fool people back into thinking they actually care about the animals. If you care about an animal, you respect its right to freedom.....not force it to perform for food and allow it to self-injure itself and other people.
Morgan the orca has similar issues 2 Sully, she’s also partially deaf so I’m glad she now has a 4ever home at Loro Parque where she has all she needs 2 live - she even has a BABY now❣️ (NO Anti-Captivity comments please!)
Morgans permit was for rehab and release! Not exhibition and breeding. There are lots of permit violations and what Loro Parque has done is beyond disgusting! And its disgusting that you cant see that. There is no proof that Morgan is deaf, the marine park wont let any outside vet test her. She was bullied and attacked daily by the other captive killer whales (which is highly unnatural in killer whale society). Also Ula has a major deformity and infection to her pectoral flippers. You should actually learn about what is going on with this orca before believing what this marine park says. www.freemorgan.org/
Everyone is getting mad that they sent this whale to SeaWorld, the whale literally would have DIED had it stayed in the wild. That and it REFUSED to leave the people that were taking care of it. There were no other options, the whale is dead now sadly, but it lived a longer, healthier life than it would’ve had it stayed in the wild.

It's so wonderful to see how humans can love and care for the animals in the ocean. Jonathan you know that I've always appreciate and love your videos, it's unfortunate to learn that he died. Great job by Sea World in caring for all those animals. God bless all of you and keep up the great work.
Wow, never knew whales got their fluids from the animals they eat. Thought they had some sort of process of extracting water through a filter system. Amazing how much you can learn even when a 30 years old man
normally i dont like any sort of animal in captivity, but i guess heres an exception
I agree! He clearly seems very happy! :)
@@retard_activated Unfortunately he died in 2012.
Thanks for watching and for your nice comments!
Why does his skin look so discolored after getting to sea world?
+MeTooHigh He had sunburn because he spent so much time on the surface.
+MeTooHigh He had a pre existing skin condition when he arrived there .
Dat Boi No they did not care good enough for him. Because when sully was still were he stranded they used a special suncream to cover his skin however sealive did not do this and also provided no suncover
MeTooHigh sunburn his cause of death
Dat Boi errrr!wrong show me your wiki link
And they said that animals are dumb.
Sully played the system and won!
He has his own place, he no longer has to hunt for his food, he has waiters and waitresses to feed him and he has 3 women to rub him down everyday.
Sully is living it up.
And, he got famous in the process! Not bad, eh? Sully, you lucky dog you!! Er...
If orcas had hands and feet they'd rival man in intelligence.
As of may 23, 2012 Sully is dead.
Humans can get this very thing in prison too. Yay

I can’t believe they gave him to sea world after the rescue I find it heart braking 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
What a sad ending... I DON'T TRUST SEA WORLD AT ALL.... :( Hope you're happy Sully. 💔🥺
I wonder if he’s still alive, wonder if he decided he didn’t want to stay in the water there in a pool 😢💔
That's adorable, I think that's a whale that likes to be pampered LOL
I’m telling you this right now guys, sea world is no fun place to keep whales in small pond. You know, have you watched that documentary film called, “Black fin?”
It’s black fish but yea
Know what, credit where it's due: Sea world took him in and cared for him. Now we watch Black Fish and hate SeaWorld. I'm not against dolphins performing, but let them because they want to not because they have too. Put the animals first. Id personally just be happy seeing these animals, they don't need to perform for me. Glad to see that SeaWorld does do SOME good atleast
They can live in the ocean with bad hearing. They help each other. You think there isn't other dolphins out there that can't hear?
@@tonigrosso7544 lol! no! pack animals kill weak links or leave them behind
This must be my favorite episode from you Jonathan.. This is so adorable

I really hope we have proper sanctuaries eventually where rescues like this can live at least a semi-normal life without risk of becoming show animals
@@migglej.r.7667 why can’t they “show” them by just showing them. Why do they have to do tricks
@@DuskLegend they’re not tricks they’re behaviors. And it’s keep them mentality stimulated cole one now think. These animals breach and swim fast and do all kinds of behaviors in the wild. It’s also their exercise for us it’s fun but for them it’s stimulating and fun I guess as well
This is the most BEAUTIFUL thing i have ever seen on RUclips!
Sully said why hunt when y'all are pampering me for free! Lol
Is your dog Irish??? 😀
I loved this video, but may Sully rest in peace now.
How wonderful that Sully was saved, but how unfortunate he had to go to Sea World and died. If they'd stop ALL animal shows and just focus on animal rescue and rehab they'd get a lot more respect.
They couldn't find him any better place than SEA-WORLD!!! after all what they have done, its just mesmerising. Jonathan, you have a great channel but this one isn't the best video you've got here.

SkyScourgeGod funny thing i did see the whale i live on curaçao and it was the first time we ever got to see a whale here
You can see how his skin changed going into captivity. Still a beautiful animal and story

Everyone is getting mad that they sent this whale to SeaWorld, the whale literally would have DIED had it stayed in the wild. That and it REFUSED to leave the people that were taking care of it. Jonathan, how do you feel about places like sea world? After all, they have a bad rep and have been accused of hurting the animals in order to train them!
I just thought with someone like you who has such a love or marine life, I thought you would rather all fish and animals of that nature be free?
But then again their is always cases like this one where the animal (sully) needs special care in order to survive.
