    As a child, my parents brought me to Sea World where I was introduced to Shamu ♡ I got a stuffed animal of an orca which became my favorite thing ever for a while. Orcas became my favorite animal and they still are 20+ years later. I hope these amazing animals are being treated kindly despite being stuck in pools. It hurts to think about.

      Hi, so first of all I’m selective cap - I don’t fully support seaworld and I definitely hate that they’re in captivity I‘d much rather see them in the wild. Unfortunately they cannot be set free from these conditions because this is the best they have at the moment. They could probably die out in the wild. I just wanted to say that the trainers do give these orcas the best care they possibly can. 💗

    As a child I was captivated by these shows and animals and thought of them as ambassadors for their species, so I felt less bad about them being in such a small tank as they were helping educate people about ocean conservation. However then I realized as an adult these shows actually never were all that educational, and had such a manufactured pathos covering up the fact it's just a glorified circus act. Not to mention that orca being money-makers at SeaWorld actually harmed the species as other companies around the world wanted to make their own profitable orca shows and capturing orcas (and dolphins, though that started earlier) became a business unto itself. Thankfully as a species they're still prolific but certain populations of them were damaged. Animals this intelligent don't deserve to have their families ripped apart for our entertainment. :(
    All that said I still thank you for the good video because it is still nostalgic memories for me as a child.

If they don't get that fish they couldn't care less about the trainers. Notice how after every little stunt, they put fish in their mouths. These animals are supposed to swim in the ocean with their pods (families). Not hopping around in bleached water with humans.

Kieko or "Willy" was a captive whale almost his whole life, even after they released him he had not pack/pod/ family where he was released. Seaworld gives HUMANS entertainment. For those of you hating on them, a lot of these orcas are bred and raised in captivity. If they didn't want to do it, they''d still get fed. They're giant animals bigger than us. If we released them back into the wild, they'd die because we feed them, keep them healthy, and make sure they're happy. The orcas who don't do shows/tricks usually just get depressed and don't do anything. They enjoy this, and do it because of that. They're not abused, and they're quite happy. They do this kind of stuff in the wild, so the shows replicate how they'd play, except with a bit of human interaction. The whales are too tame to be released, and it's not a prison. They'd show displeasure if they didn't want to be there.

    Shamu's was the first intentional live capture of a healthy orca. The three previous orca captures ("Wanda," Moby Doll and Namu) had been more opportunistic.
    The very young, 14 foot (4.25m), 2000 lb (900 kg) Southern Resident orca was captured by Ted Griffin off Penn Cove, Puget Sound in October 1965 to be a companion for the orca Namu at Griffin's *Seattle public aquarium.*
    Her name means ‘Friend of Namu’ (alternately 'She-Namu').
    However, Shamu did not get along with Namu and so was sold to SeaWorld in San Diego in December 1965.
    She died in 1971.

The question of captive orcas aside it’s a good example of how powerful interests can manufacture public opinion… train the public to think and act a certain way… much like these orcas.

A few months later, another person is deposited in that room - they speak Urdu. And then a third person, who speaks French. Then the person who took you trains you to do some weird pseudo Zumba with these two random people, and if you do it right you get corn chips. And that's it - forever. You never leave the room. I've seen part of The Cove, and yes I've seen Blackfish. However, The Cove does not apply to Sea World or any other US zoo (thay have refused to take part in such brutal practices) and Blackfish Was very misleading with twisted facts, and inaccurate descriptions and footage. I agree that wild animals should stay in the wild but these animals are no longer wild due to birth in captivity or inability to make it outside of captivity. So, now they are breathtaking ambassadors for those that are in the wild. Helping us learn more about the species so that others can stay where they belong. ^-^

    • @Doggybudder
      @Doggybudder 9 лет назад

      They are still too big for those tiny tanks (the killer whales) also even if the are born in captivity they still have their instincts from their parents who were in the wild. Furthermore, why do you think the shamus attack?

    • @ToFightOrFlee
      @ToFightOrFlee 9 лет назад +3

      I say this with highest respect to you. Just because animals have vast expanses of space in the wild does not mean they must have the same in captivity in order to be happy and healthy. Orca in the wild use all that space because they must in order to hunt and catch food. Without that necessity of moving to seasonal prey locations it stands to reason that they wouldn't need nearly as much space.
      With regard to why they attack. One large reason is the same as why a pet bird attacks the owner for no apparent reason or a dog accidentally bites its master during play. To much stimulation in the moment and not thinking of the consequences of actions. The largest difference is that an overexcited Orca can do much more damage than a dog. With respect, animal behavior is much more complicated than "it attacked because it was mistreated." or "their wild so of course they'll attack." It's not that simple, that it why aquarists and any other keeper (at least in the US) spend much of their time learning behavior and getting to know the animals individually.

  • @peace4allbeings
    @peace4allbeings 11 лет назад +2

    To me this is just so sad. There is nothing natural about this and the animal does not show us anything about their nature - it is just like a puppet doing what we want it to do. Why have a living being as amazing and majestic as this doing this? I think it is very shameful that we can enjoy this. We don't care about this animal, the way the animal feels or what it wants. It should be called what it is and that is slavery. I wish we would all refuse to be a part of this and open our hearts.

      It's not really that horrible, it's a different life that's all, they adapt to it. They are mentally stimulated in others ways and are quite spoilt really. Is a dog miserable because it's kept in a yard and not roaming miles and miles like a wild dog does, dogs have way better lives then they would having to fight, hunt and survive against rivals and predotors in the wild, get injuried in the wild and there's no vet or care for you, you slowly starve to death while your wound slowly gets infected and kills you.

    I grew up living at sea world. They opened such a large love that I have today for Marine life. I understand you don’t want animals in tanks but honestly theres no oil, no plastic, no predators, like I mean they could use larger in closures but they have it set up pretty good if you ask me. It’s not like they force the animals with whips or sticks or starvation. Think a little 🤔 💭 it you want them to corporate then obviously you’d have to work everyday with them, show love, and not endure fear to make them do anything. I’m sure they have fun doing the shows. They are all lovely and pretty much healthy. They get all the vitamins put into their fish that they eat and have the vet checkups as much as they need to. Do some research, maybe experience the magic it brings to a little kid once in a while. They aren’t harming their animals. I haven’t seen the film blackfish because I already don’t agree with cnn and their beliefs as democratic as they are. I know that there have been some accidents, with the orcas and trainers but I mean come on i don’t really believe that they honestly meant to. And when you have to single out one whale for that it may seem wrong but it’s just smart to be honest. TiliKum was sad and lonely but knew that what had happened was wrong. It’s sad but that’s the reality. Also for the people who say that it’s like someone keeping a human in a bath tub for years long. Trust me. It’s more of a pool. Nothing that’s too small. They are okay. It would be better to invest in larger in closures but they aren’t cruel how they are now. What do you think they do in the ocean. They swim in bigger circles. So the smaller ones in the tank are ok. I guess. But when there is people saying that they were taking out of the ocean and they were sad without their families. Give me a break. It was way back in the 1950-1960s last time I checked. Don’t be so clueless, although that was sad and unfair it was how they started a new captivity of semi well healthy orcas that have so much love and support 💗 so please relax. They are making improvements but this is a good at the can be right now. They have even started to stop shows and that’s going into full effects in 2019. So just chill people! 🐳🐋🐬🐟🐠🐙🦑🦐🦀🐡🦈

      The Orcas were so happy that they would drag their trainers into the tanks and attack them...so happy that they'd continuously ram their heads into the side of their tanks until they died or became seriously injured...even just from seeing the speed these Orcas go atI can see that they must need a HUGE amount of room to be happy. Something that they can't get from being in captivity.

      How is this set up "pretty good" and not "too small"? These are huge marine mammals that are use to swimming hundreds of miles every day. These tanks don't even begin to address their needs. You mention predators- Orcas are apex predators, at the top of the food chain. No other animals (except for humans) hunt orcas. I do agree that the Ocean has threats however- Yes captive sea animals don't face these threats but their natural environment is arguably still the better habitat for them between the two. I agree that our Oceans aren't as safe as they should be due to our actions yet again. I agree that we have a responsibility to reduce the pollution in the waters. It's up to us to rectify this and protect their natural environment. However, you say establishments such as SeaWorld "aren't harming animals" and that they are "lovely and pretty much healthy". This is such a baseless statement. Do you have medical reports? There's recorded reports from researchers that captive Orcas frequently get burns because the water isn't deep enough for them to find shade from the sun. There's recordings of dental trauma and the much discussed collapsed dorsal fin. One theory as to why dorsal fins collapse in captivity is because they spend a lot of time at the water surface and don't swim very far. This means that the fin tissue gets less support than it would if the Orca were in the wild, and it starts to fall over. The whales also often swim in a repetitive circular patterns. Killer whales in the wild feed on sea birds, squid, octopuses, sea turtles, sharks, rays, fish and seals. Their diet in captivity is unnatural- often being fed already dead fish. Their diet is also another theory as to why the dorsal fin collapses in captivity. These are just physical problems- an Orca's mental health and happiness is a whole other topic. These animals are highly intelligent in a similar way to us. There's reports of Killer Whales ramming their heads against the tank walls and cases of this resulting in death. You're accusing people of being clueless but many of your comments here are completely ungrounded. The last recorded time Killer Whales were taken from the ocean was in 2012! And that's just what we know about! Between 1976 and 1989, at least 54 orcas were captured from Icelandic waters and sold to marine parks around the world. Even if this had only happened in the 60s it wouldn't detract from how atrocious it is, nor does it negate the subsequent effects of such actions. Yes, we can celebrate any little small improvement but that doesn't mean we should "relax". Change comes through discussion and action. Due to the chemical filled tanks these sea animals have lived in and medication they've been given it's unlikely they could ever be released into the wild. The Orcas born into captivity wouldn't be able to survive either. However, these animals should be retired and living in much larger sanctuaries that imitate that of the environment they should be living in.

      force bred animals shouldnt be set in the wild without any training, even if it will still be dangerous.

    Do your research. Lolita is 42, Corky is 40, Kiska is 33, Katina is 35, Tilikum is 29, Orkid is 24. In the wild females can live up to 80 year, Males only live 29 years on average. Sea World does a fantastic job at trying to give these whales the best life possible under the circumstances. I agree the captivity situation isn't perfect but unless someone can travel back to the 60s and 70s when someone decided to start capturing them I don't know that there is anything better to be done.

      Keelan Howell It's still CNN though, which I do not watch because it (along with Fox news) tends to bend what they are reporting in a way so that they get you to believe what they want you to believe. And that is, coincidentally, exactly what Blackfish does. I just wish more people would actually research this stuff instead of just watching some CNN documentary and bashing Seaworld immediately afterwards.

      Monica Lulek If you ask me I think people are taking the hate against Seaworld to seriously. Besides, an elephant's zoo enclosure at any zoo is much smaller than the area it roams in a day. And nobody seems to care about that. I think Seaworld's fine.

    3:13: no one can tell me that magnificent animal enjoys that, you can see how sad that poor whale is, also, fact: Shamu died in 1971 after only 20 years of life (a whale in the wild will live as long or longer than a human... imagine dying at 20...) so not only is this not shamu it is also a terribly abused animal, if u want to watch these beautiful creatures, there are plenty of videos of them swimming happily in the ocean

    i feel sad seeing the whales fin turned like that :( killer whales are called killer whales for a reason. They may be really smart, kind, and have the great ability to be able to train. Sooner or later when the stress hits them there natural instincts are bound to come out. Crazy how they used to let trainers swim with them. i do have to say i enjoy sea world you see things you wouldn't normaly see in our day to day lifes. Poor orcas i wish there was way they could be free and we could still have the ability to personally see and enjoy this fascinating sea animal.
