  • I filmed the arrival, departure and passing scenes at Doai Station on the Joetsu Line.
Doai Station is on the Gunma side of the border between Niigata and Gunma prefectures. Its biggest feature is that there is a difference in elevation of about 80m between the up and down platforms.
This is because, when the Joetsu Line was double-tracked, the down platform was placed inside the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, 70m underground.
To get from the down platform to the station building, you need to climb a total of 462 steps that run in a nearly straight line plus 24 steps in the connecting passage, and it takes about a 10-minute walk from the ticket gate to the down platform.
For this reason, when the station was manned, down trains stopped leaving the ticket gate 10 minutes before departure.
Although the station is now unmanned, it was Tanigawadake climbing season and was bustling with climbers, even in the middle of the night.
In addition, since it is only possible to reach it by descending 486 steps from the station building on the ground in about 10 minutes, it is popularly known as "Japan's No. 1 Mole Station," and many tourists come just to see the station rather than the trains.
