I think it would be interesting to have a single diamond (either centered or off-center), with all of the remaining strips paralleling each of the four sides, to create one huge diamond design. That, of course, for a larger quilt! 😺💕🐾
That is a nice looking job you done and I can't wait to make my own quilts as that is why I got the new machines and will try and get my money out of them. You have showed me so much and with the information I have received my job should be much easier now and I thank you so much for your help.
I would use A with black edges to highlight. I wasn't sure about the string effect at first, but after you'd completed the block - it was absolutely stunning. Love this - will think of using this design for my tote bags which I'm making for Christmas presents.
I agree! I think that's how I'm going to finish it. I got distracted with other projects and the holidays but will be finishing very soon. Video in the works so be sure to come back. Thanks so much for watching!
Hi from Chilliwack BC Canada (approximately 75 miles east of Vancouver ). I just subscribed. Love the diamonds! Very clever idea for making these blocks.
I Like the stipes going in one direction after all it is a wonderful idea afterall it looks great any three ways.i look forward to the end results cheers lyn.
I'm so happy to have happened about this blog. I love your humble and friendly presentation! I know I'll be going to use this site a lot. Blessings to you, from South Africa.
Just love your stained glass string quilt. I'm a bit late, but I hope you went with the diamond quilt. I wish I could find that fabric. Guess the patterns only last a year or so.
Black sashing in between with a black border would make it pop and not look so busy. Gives the eye a chance to rest. Beautiful! But, my choice is A - Diamond.
I think the black outer border will bring it al together nicely. There are so many other colors, the black will frame the "windows." Your quilt is already spectacular.

I vote B, zig zag, then A, the diamond. I'm not a huge fan of C. I agree with an earlier comment that the lines don't work well enough together for the last pattern. I love the idea and am looking forward to seeing the finished project.
ruclips.net/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/видео.html --- I join blocks with a thin sashing. Part III where I finish the project with backing and binding coming very soon. Got a little distracted with other projects but determined to finish those dratted UFOs this year.
I wanted to see how you connected those blocks together since they were already a “sandwich” with batting and backing. Do you have a video on that ? Thank you !!
I would recommend A and as an added touch I would fussy cut a beautiful picture block and put it in the center of each block. And yes I love the black sashing
If it is already quilted with batting and backing, why more backing and how are you going to attach that backing AND I agree that you probably do NOT need the top muslin. LOVE the stained glass fabric tho! You can buy 1.5" jelly rolls in solid colors which saves a lot of time cutting. HAPPY QUILTING!!!
Thank you for watching and for your comments. There are so many ways to get the same result. The choice to use muslin was just a personal preference. Putting the backing on each square - again a personal preference -- I want to limit the fluff going into my machine. I'm working on getting this one finished (life has just been very distracting lately) and I will make a quick video showing how I attach a finished backing. I am by no means an expert. I'm learning right along with everyone else. Hope you're having a wonderful day.
The diamond look is stunning!!! Question.... muslin on back, batting in middle. Why muslin on top also? Can you just sew on top of batting and backing? BEAUTIFUL ❣️
Hello, I am not a Quilter 😋 & only just came across this String Scrap idea for blocks a few days ago 😁 it does set off the colours with the black between 😁 💕 Erica x
I like these -- 45mm Rotary Cutter Blades (PACK OF 10): amzn.to/2SdyPlI Very important (I learned the hard way) -- change the blade out as soon as you notice it giving you a bit of trouble. Also, check the screw that holds the blade -- not too tight, definitely snug, and it will loosen with use.
Personal preference. I simply prefer sewing my strips to the muslin -- in the past, the batting seemed to leave pieces behind in the machine. But, having discovered the warm and natural batting (which seems smoother and less likely to leave pieces behind in my machine) I may have to try sewing straight onto the batting again.
ruclips.net/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/видео.html --- I join blocks with a thin sashing -- the quilted blocks will just butt together with no bulk. Part III where I finish the project with backing and binding coming very soon. Got a little distracted with other projects but determined to finish those dratted UFOs this year.

I've taken some time away from my machine and from that project but a finished project is coming up! Going to be very simple -- after squares are attached, will add the backing with a few straight seams up and down, then add binding. Video is on its way.
the sashing between the blocks will be small enough that the blocks "butt" each other. I'll put a backing on it and sew down the sashing seams. Part II of this project -- ruclips.net/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/видео.html -- Part III where I finish it with backing and binding coming very soon. Thanks so much for waching.
The jelly roll and the "get squared" are the same link. I'd really like to check out the get squared, if you could put the correct link. Thank you for sharing. I really love the project.
Just curious, is there a reason you conclude a walking foot? This is a super idea, I shall look for that fabric. Much better to do quilt as you go, no fighting with huge rolls of heavy stuff in the machine.
no. I use the walking foot when I have thick, bulky or multiple layers. The piecing foot has a guide to help you get accurate 1/4" seams. HONEYSEW SA185 1/4 Inch Piecing Foot with Guide For Brother: amzn.to/2ALE592
I understand how to attach the block together with the black piece, but I'm confused about putting the backing on it before binding. Do you just sew around the edges to attach the backing? Does the backing just free float on the back with no quilting or attachment other than around the binding edge? Could you put a 1 1/2" black binding over where you've joined the muslin blocks together, fold in 1/4" on each side, stitch that on the back on each side or with a decorative stitch to cover where the muslin blocks go together? That way you could use an attractive piece of fabric in place of the muslin back, see the quilting as you go lines. Would this work? I'm just a little confused by the extra backing that is put on the quilt as you've described. Thanks for the strip quilt lesson.
Some different ways to bind it. Once the back is "quilted" (down and across the adjoining black strips), can either bind with binding or can make sure there is some overhang of the backing and fold it over the top. Part of what I love about quilting -- you can choose the method that works best for you. Thanks so much for watching.
I know this was a few months ago, what I do is, instead of using muslin while quilting as you go is I use the fabric that I plan to use as the backing. I also only use 100% cotton batting so no need to use muslin on top.
I loved the "A" layout. In fact, it has encouraged me to try this. I just completed a jacket by using a very similar technique. I am new to all of this, so your video fascinated me! Which layout did you end up doing after all?
Thank you so much! I'm going with the diamond. It's taking me a little longer to finish than I'd anticipated but once they are all attached together, will make sure y'all get to see how it gets finished. Don't forget to come back! and be careful, this string block pattern can be quite addictive!

Hey, I got a question please, if you don't mind but that blue cutting mat. where did you get it? and what can you trace that Dresden plates right off there. So it has things you can trace and cut for your sewing?
Here is a link to it on Amazon -- amzn.to/2NsZZmd I've never used the shapes on the mat yet, but it's nice to know they are there for when I DO want them. I'm assuming you'd use a think piece of paper, trace the shape and then transfer it to the fabric. Let me know how it works.
Just found this video. I love this idea but I’d like to see how you finished this quilt. Is there another video showing that? I looked but didn’t find it. Thank you.
I vote zig zag .... but in all honesty....... i have a weird ocd where things need to be even, lined up, and matching.... soooooo.... yeah... my ocd was kicking in high gear on this. very pretty though. love the colors.... and overall my vote is for zig zag.
I had to laugh with your comment. I have Meneire’s Disease, an inner ear disorder, which causes also a disconnect with my eyesight and my brain. Too much design can cause me me to get dizzy. So I prefer just straight lines because my eyes can follow the pattern with less interruption. Beautiful design and colors.
So I just found your channel, but I vote for A. So now you can tell me what one you did. LOL Do you have it posted on another video so I can see it finished? So beautiful
I can see how you finish the top by putting the 1 inch strips of black between squares and sewing them but how would I finish the bottom? or do I need to put another backing on?
I'm putting a backing on it. Part II shows how I attached a couple of the blocks to a thin sashing (no batting with the sashing -- black strip is only 1" and with the seams, the string blocks nestle next to each other) -- ruclips.net/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/видео.html Got distracted with other projects but 2019 is my UFO (unfinished objects) year! Part III where I finish the quilt is coming soon. I will "quilt" it by stitching down and across the sashing seams. Thank you so much for watching.
I realize this is an older video, but I'm wondering...you said that as you go along on these string squares it's already quilted, and I see that is the case, however, what about when you put a backing on...won't that also need to be quilted?
I really like the first setting (A). Could you give me more info on the jelly roll, absolutely adore the fabric. You say it's called "Stain glass pinwheel" can you give me who the maker is? I would like to try and order the fabric if I could. thank you
Link to Amazon in the description for Benartex jelly roll -- not the stain glass window that was purchased from Tuesday Morning. Amazon does have a selection of Benartex jelly rolls that are very pretty. In fact, I think I like the dance of the dragonfly better! more blues and purples. Thanks so much for watching.
I also love the "Dance of the Dragonfly" fabric and ordered it in a jelly roll and layer cake. May try this pattern with "A" pattern but I also love "B" so it is a toss up for me!! Never can make up my mind!! That is why my stash "of many colors" is HUGE!!! Spoken like a true quilter, eh???
I like A the best. Each diamond block could be bordered with a 2 1/2 inch black strip sash to give the appearance of windows. For the backing, I would chose a batik blend of colors similar to the colors used in the top or stained-glass side ... I don't think a person that would like all the pretty colors in the "stained-glass" side would like a backing that would be in the dark black/gray end of color, or lack of color. I think a black or gray would be depressing. Unless you want to let the family know your mood for the day when they open the bedroom door ... Stain-glass top side = "happy day" and Black/gray on top = "go away". ;)
Which layout do you prefer? A, B or C? I'm thinking of a medium to dark grey backing/binding? thoughts?
I really like A or B the best---not C; I wouldn't put a solid on the backing; I would try to find a black/grey patterned backing---just a thought
A is the one I like
I like A the best.
I like a. The diamonds
I like A
I think it would be interesting to have a single diamond (either centered or off-center), with all of the remaining strips paralleling each of the four sides, to create one huge diamond design. That, of course, for a larger quilt! 😺💕🐾

I absolutely love this! I know video is 2 years old but do you have a follow up video on how you joined the blocks?
A, for sure. Beautiful work.
If it is not too late I vote for layout A, the diamonds are stunning.
Never too late to offer an opinion. Thanks for watching!
I think I need to go to Tuesday morning. The price on that jelly roll was phenomenal. Thank you for your video.

Layout A: the diamond with the black strips between each block will be stunning!
Great answer. Thank you so much.
so pretty it looks like sparkles!
It has to be some of the prettiest fabric I have seen. Thanks for watching.
I love “ A” but I would love to see how you join them together please

I like A. I did a baby quilt where I only filled half of the square leaving other half plain. Then made it in the A pattern. It was pretty too.
That sound really neat. I would love to see it if you have any pictures. Post them on our facebook group. Thanks for your comment.
Excellent Laura I'll surely try
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
I like C...your quilt is so striking...
That fabric is beautiful! Always looking for that pattern when I'm at Tuesday Morning. Thanks for watching
I like the movement of layout A 😊

Pretty😀😀I love black borders to accent other fabrics.I use a lot of 11/2 black sashing. A is very nice.
Black sashing in between with a black border would make it pop and not look so busy. Gives the eye a chance to rest. Beautiful! But, my choice is A - Diamond.
Yes! Thank you! I was thinking about black sashing. You think black outer border as well?
I think the black outer border will bring it al together nicely. There are so many other colors, the black will frame the "windows." Your quilt is already spectacular.

Awesome idea
Number A block is very beautiful

my question above as well. got it! ill use the muslim too. kudos!

Beautiful !!!!
Where can I get a root blade that cuts that good? I am new.
I like these -- 45mm Rotary Cutter Blades (PACK OF 10): amzn.to/2SdyPlI
Very important (I learned the hard way) -- change the blade out as soon as you notice it giving you a bit of trouble. Also, check the screw that holds the blade -- not too tight, definitely snug, and it will loosen with use.
I want that wrist pin cushion! What is the brand?
I usually piece right on top of the batting. Is there a reason for the additional piece of muslin between the batting and the strings?
Personal preference. I simply prefer sewing my strips to the muslin -- in the past, the batting seemed to leave pieces behind in the machine. But, having discovered the warm and natural batting (which seems smoother and less likely to leave pieces behind in my machine) I may have to try sewing straight onto the batting again.

Love A - diamonds! How do you finish the back seams? How does the backing get quilted if it's added after the seams are sewed?

Definitely A. But all are great. Also would like to see you finish it. I'm not sure how it's done.
I personally love that idea and I am leaning toward layout a the diamond
Good choice
Did you sew the black strips down after ironing but before you added a new color strip?
yes -- always press the strips before adding a new strip
i was wondering what is the little owl that keeps peeking out in the background? haha! I might try this string technique!
The jelly roll and the "get squared" are the same link. I'd really like to check out the get squared, if you could put the correct link. Thank you for sharing. I really love the project.

I can see how you finish the top by putting the 1 inch strips of black between squares and sewing them but how would I finish the bottom? or do I need to put another backing on?
I'm putting a backing on it. Part II shows how I attached a couple of the blocks to a thin sashing (no batting with the sashing -- black strip is only 1" and with the seams, the string blocks nestle next to each other) -- ruclips.net/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/видео.html
Got distracted with other projects but 2019 is my UFO (unfinished objects) year! Part III where I finish the quilt is coming soon. I will "quilt" it by stitching down and across the sashing seams. Thank you so much for watching.
I realize this is an older video, but I'm wondering...you said that as you go along on these string squares it's already quilted, and I see that is the case, however, what about when you put a backing on...won't that also need to be quilted?
nope. Will tack it down but it won't be "quilted".
good question.
A is beautiful 😍
Awesome choice! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful I like layout A then B,, layout C no no!
Thank you for your input. Thanks for watching!
I will definitely say C!
Great choice!
To avoid lining up problem, can just cut even size strips?
I found this stained glass material at jellyrollfabric.net .
Stain-glass top side = "happy day" and Black/gray on top = "go away". ;)
Love the idea of the quilt being a "Mood Baramoter"!
Love it!! Great idea!
