Hello I just want to thank you for this tutorial, I've been trying to make this quilt pattern for years. I've finally got it and guess what I completed it and entered in our county fair and won first place. Thanks again for your tutorial.
CONGRATULATIONS!! 🎉🎉🎉 That’s awesome. It feels great to finish a quilt especially one that’s given us a few problems but it’s even better when that quilt wins a blue ribbon.

I am going through the Untutorial play list which also has this video. I am also missing Robin and glad that she, her children, and pets are all safe. ❤️
You’re welcome. When all the blocks are sewn together it’s sometimes hard to see the individual blocks. Makes the quilt fun in my opinion. I love this block.
Looked at the original blog... your tutorial was much easier to follow... I am so excited to try this out as I have a ton of scraps - mostly 2.5". Thank you
@@debihinkle6100 I think a mix of widths looks nice in these blocks. You could make one and see if you like It. If you don’t then you can turn It into a potholder or hot pad. If you want to see what four looks like together you can turn the finished set into a pillow top or small quilt for a doll or stuffed animal.
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm planning on making a quilt with this pattern and you have really explained things so wonderfully that I'm going ro start it now. Thank you again.
You’re very welcome. I’ve sewn many string blocks. To the point where they were getting boring. It’s nice to have something a bit different that uses up my strings.
This is a wonderful quilt block! I made a similar one, but did a quilt-as-you-go, and did both sides at the same time with different color themes, and then sashed the finished blocks together. It was easy, once I got it going, and I used my batting under my main fabric to stabilize it, and when the block was done it was quilted, and once I squared each one up, they were ready to sash, and its completely reversible. I love it. One side is comprised of reds, golds, greens, and tans, while the other side has a blue theme.
Thanks loads for all the tips and tricks for this scrappy block. I really enjoyed your channel. I especially liked seeing you use the black for the base. Both the little and the big squares have a great look for different reasons. I’ve seen this pattern done with a white background, but like the pop with the bright colors using black. Of course there are also many uses for these blocks besides just bed quilts. I can even see one of those big diamond stars on the back of a jacket. I can’t wait to see what else you’ve cooked up on your program. I’ll be back, for sure.
Robin, I love this pattern- I picked up a small bag of inch and half fabric strips at Michaels for 97cents to try this block. Great tutorial I love watching you!!! Thank you
Robin I like both but I’m going with the larger block. The first thing I thought was “ I bet I could do this as a QAYG” yep you confirmed it. Thank you as always perfect instruction. Blessings.
I’m a newbie and you described this perfectly! I learn by watching rather than reading directions so I thank you from the bottom of my heart just gorgeous
Love this block, so thanks for teaching it. This would be an awesome block for quilt as you go. Having the quilting done when you're finished with your block helps finish your project to get to the next one faster. I love this cuz I waist little because I also do miniatures. TFS...
Very good tutorial. I'm with you, Robin. I seldom press seams open but definitely would with this pattern. I saw this same quilt done in all purples, pinks, and lavenders. It was stunning. Have a great weekend. Quilt on!
Thank you. I love the look of those small strips but they are a time commitment. Projects like these are fun to work on in between other projects. That way you can add in your scraps after each project.
I got out a sketch book and stated measuring to what size I am about to start. It is not so easy.. I was trying to simplify it. I have no scraps I will be using all new material. So I may wait awhile till I attempt it. But I am calling it the black star or the double kite quilt top. Each of the black segments is a true kite design. The central diamond looks more like a kite to me. Anyway, I have it in my notebook and sized to 8 inches. Have not decided yet on whether to take away 1/12 inch or add 1/2 inch for the seams. will wait till I get ready to cut to decide.
I see nothing wrong with cutting fabric for a scrap project. That way you get It purposefully choose your fabrics and colors. I haven’t made one yet but I do have a bin of narrow strips waiting for me.
I love this block. I have visions of bright yellow background with my Christmas scraps. I'm going to write it in the todo book. So many quilts, so little time. Thanks for sharing your skills
Oooh. That sounds pretty. All those yellow stars would be perfect for a Christmas quilt. I need to find the right to craft book for myself. I keep writing things down in different places and then forget where i wrote It or even what i wrote.
Thank you Robin! That was very helpful to have the video to watch. I really appreciate you doing that. I like both sizes, but I think I will try making the bigger block first and maybe I can complete it quicker. Thanks again!
What a great project! Hope to make both sizes, small for a grandchild who sleeps in a twin and the larger for another grandchild who has a full size bed. Thank you so much 😊
Hello Robin - I'm a pinner & I did that with every strip I sewed on my bluey quilt. After the first strips were sewn in the middle, I would then do both sides at the same time, working outwards & ironing as I go. Because they were large blocks I enjoyed doing one block at a time. One tip I liked from you today was how to sew & flip back the fabric strips, then cut off the excess fabric at the end. When I finally get around to doing this quilt I'll think about if I want to save all my black cut-off pieces for another project. I also thought about cutting all the black blades first then adding the fabrics to the sides. I thought your smaller blocks looked super cute - when I finally start I think I'll try a 6.5" & a 9.5" to see what I like best. Thanks for a great tutorial today - hope you have a nice weekend :)
I did tell think you could use a template to cut the center blade. Maybe add a thin stabilizer/interfacing so you don’t have to worry about the bias edges. Or starch the heck out of It 😀. I love when you guys tell me that one of my random tips was something new and helpful. That makes all of this work worth It. Plus, I always learn something from you guys too 😃
🥰💕Great block Robin 👍Have to try it sometime soon. So glad to see you doing your videos. I admire your strength. Sending you Healing Angel 😇 Prayers for continued strength. I love the small block it looks so sharp with the black center. But the big block would be completed faster. Great video very clear & easy to follow. Thanks for more inspiration for using up our scraps. My right hand surgery is on Wednesday September 11th. I’m getting anxious thinking about not being able to sew, quilt, crochet or knit again for a little while while recovering. My left hand surgery was in November. Praying both hands will be like new again. Protect your hands. You don’t want this pain. The one thing I can do while recovering is possibly machine quilting just can’t thread the machine. I can’t even read a book I can’t hold the page open. Healing Angel Prayers are needed. 😇🙏🏻 🥰💕🧶🧵👍👍
Thanks Maria! One more surgery and you’re done. Sending lots of healing thoughts your way. I love my kindle. Hands free and easy on the eyes reading. I’ve had 3 surgeries on my right shoulder and 1 on my left so I understand your struggle. I was in a supersized sling for a few weeks each time and limited use for weeks afterwards. I read loads of ebooks during that time.
I love them both!! I really like the idea of always repeating the same color family as you go round and round the stars. I made a quilt top with string blocks using only black, white and gray variations; and people oohed and aahed over it. It's beautiful. But the star is wonderful! Thank you!
Robin!! I love it!! My dad loves a good black and white quilt. Or a jewel tones quilt. This would work for either! I'll have tk show it to my mkm, but you may have found my pattern for me! 😀 (And if not, Im gonna make it anyway just cuz I want too!!!! 😂)
Exactly! The small one would be one of those projects you work on when you don’t really want to think or work on your other projects. Eventually It would get done and then It would be a masterpiece 😉
Great video tutorial! I am looking for more forgiving block designs. Having to precision piece just stresses me out! LOL! Thanks for demo-ing this great idea. I think I can do this!
Thank you - I really like this pattern. The itty bitty blocks are my favorite. Going to have to give this a try. Thank you Robin - Great to see you. Happy crafting!
I’m going to keep working on my bigger blocks but I think the smaller version might become my next string project. I’ve used almost all of my string blocks from the series we did so now I can start something new. Thanks!
I love the block, I also love black as a mane color because it makes everything pop. I love the larger blocks myself and think this quilt it great for many people. Keep up the great work, I look forward to your videos.
Ho oh i missed this one that is beautiful awe pretty something to think about now need black material yes i like that to one color perfect not sure if i tempt that one numbers would get to me lol but it is sooo pretty Robin thanks for showing us
I was really looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint! Since you got me hooked on string quilting I have not tired of making them. I like both sizes. Keep the awesome videos coming. I look forward to them every week. Great job!
Thanks Sally! These are like fancy strings 😂. String blocks are something that I’ve made on and off since I first learned about them. They’re very relaxing.
Can't wait to try this. Will probably try t h e smaller one first then move on to larger block. The secondary diamonds are amazing. Pray you are doing well.
Thank you Gloria. I’m doing okay. Day by day and step by step right? I hope you’re doing well. I love seeing your comments pop up. Even though the technique is the same It almost feels like each size is a different project.
@@rsislandcrafts still in chemo. Even though I know the eventual outcome leaves little hope, I still believe in miracles. Don't have a lot of stamina but sewing helps take away the sorrow. Crumb blocks ., string blocks and trying new patterns have been a Godsend. Love your videos. You have no idea how much they help especially people in my dire situation. God bless you.
@@vickirobles3406 thank you for the encouraging words. We also travel long distances to doctors, hospitals, chemo etc-176 files one way. We know it will be worth it one day.
Gloria I feel very blessed to be able to be part of this time for you even in such a small way. You're very strong. Keep fighting for as long as your body will let you. You never know when the next miracle drug is going to show up. At least that's what we were told by a very strong (and loudly opinionated lol) nurse and I agree. Do you have enough scraps to keep you busy?
Hello, your blocks turned out Beautiful with the Black & Colourful Strips 😁 I am going to do some string scrap blocks 😁 but got to wait to buy Black Cotton Fabric until my local shop opens up again 💕 Erica x
Good tutorial again, Robin! While you were going through it, I was looking for a way to make the center piece out of a strip to save fabric. I suppose it could be done, but then it would be on the bias. It doesn’t seem like it would be much of a savings anyway. 🤷🏼♀️ I love the look of the tiny blocks, but I would get bored with making them awfully fast. I would probably make the large blocks for myself.
You could make a template for the center blade but like you said then you have to deal with the bias edges. Lots of starch or a light weight fusible stabilizer would help but I wonder if it would be worth the effort. I think cutting off the corners of the foundation fabric, especially for the larger blocks, might be worthwhile. If I make the smaller blocks It would definitely be a long term in between project. Maybe make 2 or 3 a week or so.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin - That’s what I was thinking about the workarounds. It’s a prime example of the law of diminishing returns. I think mini quilting is just a different mindset. A mindset that is not mine. 😆 Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comments. Your videos brighten my day.
Love this block and it's really good for quilt as u go. Love the black center it makes your scrappy pieces pop. One question. Is there any issue with the center black piece being a thinner weaker point since it's one layer and the rest 2 layers with the scrap pieces?
I think if your black is of good quality then you should be fine. When you make a “normal” quilt block there is only one layer of fabric. The extra layer under the strings just makes it a bit thicker. If you’re doing this block as QAYG then after you sew down the first strip on the left and right of the “center” block section then you could trim away the “extra” black before you sew the rest of the strips. You could also make a paper template and sew the block like a spider web block. Happy sewing!! #createwithscrapitude
Excellent tutorial! I like both the large and the original small blocks for different projects. I think the small blocks could be used in a bag, right? And the larger ones for a quilt or larger wall hanging. Fun! Also I like that you digress and insert ideas or your thought process here and there -- maybe because it's the way my explanations are: digressional! (Is that a word? If not, I'm making it one. But I digress!) Thanks again, Robin!
I digress all the time. My daughter does the same thing. Our conversations circle back around all the time 😆. Sometimes i remember something 2 or 3 steps later and I’m sure not going to start over each time this happens. I would never get a video out 😆. It’s what would happen if we were to be in the same room crafting together anyways. 🤷♀️ Yes, the little blocks would work great for smaller projects like bags, pillows, table runners, etc.
Sure. They’re basically string blocks. I always suggest making a test block. Then you’ll know if you like how It looks and if your various width scraps work for you. If you don’t like It you can always turn It into a potholder or hot pad. Have fun!
I do periodically list my scraps in my artfire shop. I have my shop linked in the description of most of my videos. Right now I have a listing for crumb scraps but I was thinking about listing some of my string block scraps later this week. Thanks!
It’s been awhile since I’ve made one of these blocks so I’m not 100% sure. My suggestion would be to go ahead and try It. Just make one block and see if it works. If not then you can turn It into a mug rug, a hot pad, or small pillow. Please come back and let everyone know if It works. I’m sure there are others wondering the same thing.
I made one using paper foundation because I thought that was the way to do it. I had not watched a tutorial on how to do it. What I did was make a pattern of that center wedge and cut those out of black fabric and centred them on the paper then continued with strips.
I can hear you very well and I thank you so much love the volume and I love your quilts May God continue your family and your Channel from a new friend Ella b r a n s f o r d:-).
Great tutorial, why not just measure and then with a ruler draw a line down each side of your block. I have to see the line to "get it". May you could cut your foundation block a 1/2 inch larger to be able to square up to an even 10.
Enjoyed the idea but you jumping back and forth drove me crazy. Continue with the lesson then go back to quilting ideas or whatever your suggestion. Don't mean to be critical but finish the lesson and then go back
Thank you for the feedback. It’s something that I’ve hopefully improved on since this video. It’s the way my brain works and I have had to learn to slow down and keep things in a more orderly way so that others can follow. Tutorial first. Various ideas after. Sometimes I just get a little excited and forget 🦩
This is a great design, but I thought you explained a lot of things that did not actually help the viewer to execute the square you were showing us. Got a little confusing and I lost interest.

I’m going to keep working on my bigger blocks but I think the smaller version might become my next string project. I’ve used almost all of my string blocks from the series we did so now I can start something new. Thanks!
Yay you definitely simplified this for me, 1000 thank yous!
I’m so glad I could help. This is such a fun block.
Excellent tutorial, and SO pretty!
I love the block, I also love black as a mane color because it makes everything pop. I love the larger blocks myself and think this quilt it great for many people. Keep up the great work, I look forward to your videos.
Ho oh i missed this one that is beautiful awe pretty something to think about now need black material yes i like that to one color perfect not sure if i tempt that one numbers would get to me lol but it is sooo pretty Robin thanks for showing us
I love the small one but it would take a long time to make a full size quilt.
Blocks can be used to make many things. Thank you Robin.
I think the small one would definitely have to be worked on like crumb blocks. A few blocks here and there until you have enough for a large quilt.
I’m more likely to make a small shoulder bag with it - would look very good, especially when keeping the central area smaller as you did.
They would make a fun bag.
Nice
Thanks
@@vickirobles3406 oops thats 176 miles one way.
Love this block! You are very good at explaining, Thank You!
Thank you so much. This is a fun block.
Beautiful job! Can't wait to make this one!
I like the the smaller one
Me too.
Like the big block better. I'm currently attempting a 6 &1/2" block quilt.
It’s a fun block and I like that it’s adjustable in size.
I love the look of the tiny blocks, but I would get bored with making them awfully fast.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comments. Your videos brighten my day.
Exactly. How much extra work are you willing to do in order to save one step or a little fabric? Thank you! You're very sweet.
@@rsislandcrafts ty for your response.👍
I would trim off the black fabric after the first stripped. Use that black on something else.
I want to work on these blocks this year. I’ll try your idea. Thanks!
Thanks so much. Great tutorial!!
Excellent teaching job, by the way! This can be confusing, but you did an exceptional job!!
Thank you so much.
I have a 1970s quilt book on string quilting. This pattern is in that book.
Old quilt books are fun to look through. Quilts have been around for so long I’m not surprised that this isn’t a new design.
& actually Solid Black Cotton Fabric 😁 & other patterned black fabric 😋 not got any black fabrics at all 💕 Erica x
I love using patterned black fabric. Tone on tone adds a bit of depth to a quilt block.
You did a really great job with this and with the explanation also!
Thank you so much.
Would these blocks work using different widths of fabric strips? My scraps are all different widths and really don't want to trim if I don't have to.
Sure. They’re basically string blocks. I always suggest making a test block. Then you’ll know if you like how It looks and if your various width scraps work for you. If you don’t like It you can always turn It into a potholder or hot pad. Have fun!
Love all those fabrics. Do you sell your scraps or strips? I'd love a bunch. Cool project...I love black too.
I do periodically list my scraps in my artfire shop. I have my shop linked in the description of most of my videos. Right now I have a listing for crumb scraps but I was thinking about listing some of my string block scraps later this week. Thanks!
Can I use 10-inch paper in order to save on black fabric?
Thank you Ella. 🦩
It is an old pattern been around for ages, doubt we even know who first came up with it.
🦩
Great tutorial, why not just measure and then with a ruler draw a line down each side of your block. I have to see the line to "get it". May you could cut your foundation block a 1/2 inch larger to be able to square up to an even 10.
You could definitely draw a line if that is easier for you to visualize It. Then you would know you had a nice straight line in each block.
Its also no need to quilt it more as the majority of the raw edges are hidden.
Oh my!!!! This was too long!!!!
