My Smashing Pumpkins Playlist! • The Smashing Pumpkins
In this Cherub Rock guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from The Smashing Pumpkins in its entirety.
The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.
There are some fantastic riffs in this one. From the clean guitar intro riff, to the full throttle riffs throughout the rest of the song, "Cherub Rock" is just a blast to play.
I will cover each riff in the song in the order that each appears on the original recording. It can be a challenge to memorize where each riff goes since there are a few variations thrown in there throughout the song. But if already know how the song goes, you won't have much trouble after going through this lesson.
For many sections of the song there are two distinct guitar parts, one for Billy Corgan and the other for James Iha. I will cover each player's riffs for those sections whenever they occur.
I will also cover Billy Corgan's solo note-for-note. This solo is full of great melodic ideas that work perfectly over James Iha's rhythm part for this section.
Have fun tackling this great early classic from The Smashing Pumpkins!

Awesome
You should do more off this album, like rocket or hummer.
He should do some Gish. The solos are the craziest on that album.
Any song off this album would be awesome to learn at any time.
Hummer!
Today!
Please do Today.
I wish every RUclips lesson was this good
OMG! You did it! Cherub Rock! You really do read our comments and take note of our requests. Get your requests in everyone. Carl is listening. Thank you Carl. Now I can learn this song. So excited. You’re the best. ❤️❤️❤️
This was great! Let’s smash some more Pumpkins. TODAY! I mean the song.
Yes Today!
Hey Carl I just wanted to chime in and let you know how much I enjoy your song lessons. I've been playing for 27 years and when I search the web to learn a song I am wanting to learn....YOU are the 1st choice anytime I see you have done a lesson. Much appreciated!! Keep it up
Paul from Bakersfield CA
INCREDIBLE THAT ACADEMY GUY'S, AT LEAST GO CHECK IT OUT, YOU GONNA BE SUPRISE ALL THE STUFF YOU CAN GET THERE AND THE SUPPORT HE GIVE IN THERE IS JUST FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
Carl's Academy has caused my playing to jump several significant levels. And the support and guidance he gives you is awesome!
Absolutely a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Would love to see more of them here!
Yes more Siamese Dream. I love that album. Hey Carl. I know you just read that. 😘
I've been obsessed with them again for months lol
Can never go wrong with The Smashing Pumpkins! Thanks, Carl!
It seems like he did, though. At 28:15, the part where he does the two octaves, the original song actually does the first bend an octave higher than shown here, then goes two octaves down to the second note in this video. I don't know how they did it, but compare 28:15 here to 3:17 in the original song.
This one was definitely a gaping hole in your catalogue. So glad you filled it!
Learned this song awhile back from other RUclips lessons. But as soon as I saw you did this Carl, I knew right away that it’d be the most complete and accurate lesson I could find and will correct any mistakes I may have been making. You’re the man!!
More Pumpkins please........any will do!! Thank Carl, you have rekindled my appreciation for playing again!
How did I forget how good the Pumpkins were.
Shame 🔔
Shame on you
'Cuz they downhill after this LP
@@louielouie6462 they released MC&TIS after this tho
You're a total mind reader, Carl. I've been trying to learn the solo for a few days now!
My fav pumpkins song
Wow you nailed the fast pull offs in the solo. Corgan is a master at these fast pentatonic licks.
Been waiting for you to smack this one out Carl. 🙌
Thank you so much Carl. I have learnt all the songs I have been playing on guitar from you so far. You are a legend!
Nice. As a shitty guitarist who just plays every now and then on my own for fun, I've always struggled with the intro. Something about the strumming pattern combined with the muting, but the open E always being clear - probably my own incompetence but I could never figure out how to play it even close to the right way just from tabs. The way you articulated it really shows how simple it is though. Really great vid, your ability to articulate and explain things like that is what makes your channel so much better than a typical guitar tutorial channel. Not only explaining it in a way that's clear, but in a way that lets people think about how to incorporate the style + technique into other things instead of just robotically copying you to learn one song.
Hard pressed to think of a 'bigger' song. awesome. thanks
Absolutely outstanding Carl!!!!!
Please do “hummer” by the pumpkins.
YES YES YES !!!! Thank you Carl, I hope you’ll do a guitar version of the song « Mellon collie and the infinite sadness ».
Cheers from France 🇫🇷
Most in-depth and accurate lesson on the web! Thank you for your help!!! 10/10

Love your Van Halen lessons, so much easier than trying to tan them myself!
Best guide i have found yet! 10/10.
Heaps of fun to revisit this great song after 2 years.
Punkins “Rocket” next!
really needed those little guitar fills at the end chorus. wtv great vid carl thanks for teaching me how to rock
Awesome song , Awesome lesson
Love your ending of the solo played clean! The final vibrato at the 2nd fret has such a mournful feel to it. Very stirring. I like it better than the album. Thanks for a wicked lesson!

Thanks!!!
This is their best song. Period.
Geek USA on top
Mayonaise
idk about that one, i’d say top 5. mayonnaise and geek usa are better in my opinion
Good choice here " Smashing Pumpkins are awesome " I know I did a cover of Today that song & 1979
Cool choice Carl. Thanks.
Hey, I have two kind of bucket list requests for you: “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison and “New Year’s Day” by U2. I hope this message finds you well, and if any of these requests strike your fancy and are something you could get into doing a lesson on, then tear it up.😉 Have a great week!
Best solo ever
At :23, my inner Beavis & Butthead yelled "Yes! Yeah yeah yeah! Rock!" and started headbanging.
Great video. Extremely helpful,thank you..

Yesterday was Billy Corgans Birthday!
Thanks!
The song I didn't know I wanted to learn. Until I learnt it this morning. Bloody excellent lesson! Thanks so much, Carl. I'm now going to give it a go on my acoustic. I bet it sounds awesome on that as well.
Yep! Sounded awesome on the acoustic. Fantastic! 😃👍
thank you
Thanks a lot Carl for all your amazing lessons. I would like to see some Avenged Sevenfold stuff, especially the songs Afterlife and M.I.A.
Good song choice. Could just by the Guitar Hero 3 guitar tabs for this one though. Obviously this video is way better, and I’m totally gonna go jam this now, but still. We need the Umphrey’s McGee and Dopapod tutorials. The anti radio rock. Lol
Awesome lesson Carl! It would be so awesome to see you take on some more Stone Temple Pilots songs, "Silvergun Superman" and "Lady Picture Show" in particular. Please and thank you!
Excellent lesson. But I do like Chris Zoupas interpretation of the solo slightly better. I don’t know which one is technically more accurate. But I like the sound of his just a bit better. But everything else on this lesson is killer, and I thank you for it! 🤘🏻
The Frayed Ends of Sanity please!
Very cool..thank you sir
Nice carl
Would you be able to cover more smashing pumpkins? Maybe “Here is No Why” or “Soma”?
Could you tell us what distortion you're using and maybe share the settings? I would appreciate it. Thanks for the video. Great job as always.
yaaaay!!! thanks so much!
Can you please do a tutorial on everybody wants some I’ve been waiting for awhile
YES!!!!
Would love to see more Toto songs in the future, perhaps Hold the line?
Gracias ,🤘🇨🇱
Can you please do a lesson of Slipknot Purity 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Plz Carl frayed ends of sanity plz
Yes!!!z
“Bad horsie” by Steve vai would be a fun one
Brilliantl
I would kill for a lesson of Tonight (We Need A Lover) by Mötley Crüe.
you should do Lay Down by priestess
I think he uses first in version on the Amaj in the chorus.
Just found like it has the third on top.
Okay, cool!
Cheers
Honestly you could just do tutorials on all of Guitar Hero 3 and I'd be happy
i love you carl
Is it okay if I play an A5 chord at the fifth fret rather than the A Triad? I think it sounds good. I still need practice with the triad shapes tho so I'll keep trying. They're the same shapes from Crazy Train! Also. A great lesson by Carl!
Awesome lesson Carl! Could we get Blue Powder by Steve Vai?
Could you do some more Dio songs please? Straight to the heart, Last in line, We rock maybe. Thanks in advance
I want a Fender
Me to
Can you do a gnr locomotive lesson I just can’t get one anywhere
Cure
Great Lesson! But according to what I read neither Iha or Darcy recorded a single note on Siamese Dream. Vig the producer didn’t think they played well enough and he refused to record them. So Corgan and Chamberlain were the only two on the record. This insulted Iha and may have led to the breakup of the band. I saw Iha play live and he played fast and furious so I’m surprised he wasn’t on the record.
You should do some Alice In Chains
Hi Carl, can you do a lesson on I Am One?
You should do full lesson on metallica the god that failed
Nailed it!
Thanks for another lesson! How about Operation Mindcrime one day!?
