The 60's, 70s and 80s were hotbeds of insane creativity of biblical proportions where some of it is still way ahead of it's time. 90s artists grew up with all of that swirling around them and they channeled it into their work.
7:33 Drown wasn't on Gish. But it was probably recorded with this guitar. Same time frame. If there was ever a guitar story to make a grown man cry, this is it.
@@blonkeddleharvey2308 I dug up the wiki on Drown. It was recorded after Gish was originally released, but Drown was included on the 2011 re-release version of Gish. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drown_(The_Smashing_Pumpkins_song)
Not surprising Billy can put into words how much that guitar meant to him. We are all happy to hear it again. It really does have a signature sound. Full circle much deserved.
Congratulations Billy! I lost a unique crucifix pendant my grandmother gave me years earlier. It was missing for 9 years. I checked flea markets, garage sales, even pawn shops. I then started checking out eBay. That was the longest shot, but I had nothing to lose. After 9 years of searching, I actually found it. There was no doubt it was the one. The turquoise flecks were identical. The seller was in Texas... I am in California! It was $36 and I of course bought it immediately. When it came in the mail, I felt complete again. Like a part of me that was missing, was returned. I am wearing it was I write this. May your guitar never again leave you, and may you make more beautiful music with her for years to come.
Alright, first of all let me tell you that my wife laughed at me because I almost cried but it's true, the moment I read about this I was so damn happy for Billy that I just couldn't help it. This might look like a meaningless event for some people, slightly meaningful for others, but only a guitarist knows that feeling when you finally find your sound and no matter what, even if you switch guitars you still have the ONE that makes you feel like a kid in a candy shop. Some people swap pickups, or sell their guitar and find what they're looking and some don't and they spend months, even years triying to get that magic back... And they might never get it back. So, Billy, from one grown up kid to another grown , hope you never lose it again
Fucking right on man. I was moving around alot in my early 20's and pawned a Jackson original and a '74 Les Paul. The Paul I replaced later and sounds the same but that Jackson - FUCK!! I CANT SEEM TO FIND ANOTHER ONE WITH THE PLAYABILITY, FEEL, SMELL, WHATEVER! And I dont have Billy money but if I ever found it again I'd definitely pay the owner WAY more than it's worth for it back!!
Everyone needs to find a person who looks at them the way Billy looks at his guitar. I'm so happy you found your guitar. Hearing you play it makes my heart happy. 💗
Billy has the rare ability to articulate the things in life that are profoundly meaningful to creative types in such a straightforward, relatable way. As a '90s child - my first show I ever went to at 10 years old was Smashing Pumpkins in 1995 at the height of the Mellon Collie phenomenon - it's so cool to be able to watch these kinds of videos now. They really have come full circle, and it's a beautiful thing
My best friend growing up had parents who owned a concert club and Weezer came thru on their first tour. They asked us if we could help load their gear into the bus and Rivers hands me, a total stranger, his guitar case. While I never thought about stealing it, I was shocked at the trust. Of course if it went missing it would have been obvious who took it and they knew where I lived etc. But I couldnt imagine handing my guitar to a stranger and I'm nobody. They gave us a cheese and cracker spread with some cokes along with t-shirts and autographed flats for helping which I would have gladly done just for the experience! Great guys.
I saw you play this guitar in 91 at the now long gone I-Beam on Haight st. Hole opened up. There were about 35 people in the audience and, in all honesty, I was forever changed by the experience.
corey fisher Man I remember the I-Beam! Those late 80’s-early 90’s were such a fertile time for music in the Bay Area. I remember Primus playing at the Nightbreak.
Nothing funnier than Billy mentioning that they're recording the next Smashing Pumpkins album which is "very much a guitar record" and every single they've released recently is synth pop did a real 180 there bro
@@cdreyes81 i don't have a problem with them recording synth pop (even though their newest album kinda sucked), i mean my favorite band is animal collective and they're overwhelmingly electronic, i just think it's funny billy called it a "guitar record" when it ended up not being one. stop being a weird dick
Seriously shitty thing to do, but even worse, there's always the chance someone had no idea what they were stealing, and sold it for next to nothing, which would piss me off even more! Especially because some instruments are literally irreplaceable, you can't put a price on that exact instrument, no matter how common!
my college roommate had his violin stolen out of locked storage at the school. It was a family heirloom passed down through at least a couple generations and was worth a couple hundred thousand dollars. Police get involved, nothing. More than 10-years later he is scrolling through instrument auctions and notices a violin up for auction through Christies; he thought it was his. Anyway, they go back and forth verifying that he was the rightful owner. He ended up both getting the violin back, and catching the thief in the process. It was a visiting professor and it apparently wasn't the only school he had done this at; the same guy my roommate had suspected from day one.
@@jamesoxford4260 I find that hard to believe but then again I don't know you. Why would your roommate even take a chance at using/leaving that at school knowing what the value is and where it came from even if it's in locked storage? Was it a stradivarius?
Caught the same tour in Burlington VT. One of my friends went up to the PJ guys on the bleachers after their set to have them sign a bootleg t-shirt. They all signed it anyway and I overheard the comment that it was the first bootleg Tshirt they had ever seen before of their band. In my friend's defense, he was 13 and had no idea what a bootleg t-shirt even was. He though it meant "cool" or "rare".
Pretty sure I just heard Billy say the next album is going to be a “guitar album”....and he has the Gish guitar again. Holy smokes, I’m hyperventilating from the excitement! Go get it, rock god!!!
drown almost sounds like a love song about this guitar . "no matter where you are ..." "all of those yesterdaze --- coming around." drown in thee guitar sound !
Drown is how I ended up in love with them. I heard it on the radio and drove around Dallas all day buying everything by them I could find. Finally found it on the Reality Bites soundtrack but by then I'd listened to everything else...and the rest, as they say, is history. My god their music was a lifeline for me during the insanity of my 20's. And it all started with that one song. "No matter where you are I can still hear you when you dream You traveled very far You traveled far, like a star And you are..."
The guitar sounds on Vaseline by Stone Temple Pilots were set up for them by Frank Zappa and Billy Corgan. Not to be underestimated in my opinion, more like iconic.
I still can't believe Billy and James are playing and recording together again. it's great. and I still can't get used to them being older, the spirit of the band was always so youthful.
Youth is less about age and is more a state of mind. And it seems like the boys have recaptured some of that youthful spirit. Thankfully, the new album really does have some of that old Pumpkins magic.
All. The. Feels. Butterflies in my stomach, heart fluttering, goosebumps all over!! This is just AMAZING! So, so happy for Billy!! 🤩💖 James cracking me up with “I feel like we’re on Antique Roadshow.” 😂 Thanks for sharing this moment with the world!!
things that made me happy in this video: 1. Having the gish guitar returns! 2. seeing Billy and James together in this video! this is basically new reasons why I love this band so much! ❤️❤️ (still excited for shiny vol. 2)
Those riffs - that sound! I listened to Gish pretty heavily while attending college in Chicago circa 1991 - right as the band broke. That guitar is absolutely something special.
You can see in Billy’s face the joy and memories coming back to where he started from and I’m glad there are people out there who were just as happy to give it back to him !! Curious to see if this guitar will reflect some of his new material on their next album
Its nice to know how buzzy his guitar sounds. I can hear the strings rattling in the saddles and the frets and I can relax about my guitars making these sounds.
back in the 90's i was a wee adolescent in college. the Smashing Pumpkins were so rad and wild and downright dark. very much innocent yet quite ironic too. 27 years later, Gish is reborn.
I still remember how I felt when I put GISH into my cassette deck of my old Chevy Monza! It was life changing, still my favorite Pumpkins album! So happy for Billy!
Thanks for sharing this story! Gish got me through one of the most difficult times of my life, and just seeing the guitar and hearing that sound again is amazing! So glad you were finally able to get that missing piece of your past, in essence, a missing piece of your soul. @@Uncannyguitar It is. I have one. Its nothing flashy but all the parts are solid. Its like a USA Strat but the finish will naturally relic itself quicker.
I still recall the first time I heard Gish when my younger brother turned me on to it. I was blown away right away. Loved the lush, psychedelic sound of that album right off the bat. Only got to see you guys once, at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO about 25 years ago. So happy for you getting your guitar back after all those years. I can relate to your sense of recapturing the "certain sound" of that guitar, as well as a piece of your youth which it symbolizes to you.
That is an amazing fucking story. The best part was seeing you and James together with the lost guitar.. I would love to see you guys do an antiques rock roadshow together. Maybe when you are older.
I remember when Fender did a Billy Corgan Stratocaster a few years ago, that people were going "Huh, I never saw him as being a Strat-guy!" The truth is that he hardly played anything else.
@@nickfanzo I saw them during the "Adore" tour and Billy was playing a Black Gibson ES-335 and an Ibanez Universe seven string for the whole show and James was playing Gibson SG's which sound brighter than Les Pauls. According to a recent Guitar World interview, when the rehearsals for the new tour started, with Billy playing Reverend models, the sound wasn't right and James actually said "Where's your strat?" So Billy at first said that his reverend was tweaked to sound just like his strat but just to make sure, he had his crew fetch him his Blue strat. Billy plugged it in and there it was: THAT sound.

The 60's, 70s and 80s were hotbeds of insane creativity of biblical proportions where some of it is still way ahead of it's time. 90s artists grew up with all of that swirling around them and they channeled it into their work.
@@leonl1559 kid A, OK computer, Pablo Honey..... All came out in the 90s... They were DEFINITELY at their peak in the 90s very early 00s

7:33 Drown wasn't on Gish. But it was probably recorded with this guitar. Same time frame. If there was ever a guitar story to make a grown man cry, this is it.
Drown is a really good song. I don’t know why it didn’t make the album. Some deluxe versions of Gish have it as a bonus track.
It wasn't recorded until 1992 which was after Gish came out.
@@blonkeddleharvey2308 I dug up the wiki on Drown. It was recorded after Gish was originally released, but Drown was included on the 2011 re-release version of Gish. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drown_(The_Smashing_Pumpkins_song)
It is on the Singles soundtrack though.
I bet it was definitely written on it though
Not surprising Billy can put into words how much that guitar meant to him. We are all happy to hear it again. It really does have a signature sound. Full circle much deserved.
I think the guitar decided that it was time to make a new Pumpkins record with his old buddy Billy.
Bryan Conner Like the ring: "It's heard it's master's call"
I smiled through this entire video. ❤️ I’m so happy he found his guitar.
🤘😂 #metoo
It was great to hear those old riffs again.
We're it not for my severe bells palsy I would have as well
Wish he could find D'Arcy again
May your guitar never again leave you, and may you make more beautiful music with her for years to come.
yes but that was really his guitar lol
Brother I hear you!! Full body chills & heart feeling like I'm falling in love! What an impact SP has had on our gen. ♥️
Well, I cried a little. It's too exciting!
Seems like you were more moved by this than Billy himself. He barely seems excited about it!
@uni blab what lmao
Everyone needs to find a person who looks at them the way Billy looks at his guitar.

Mine too, so much. I teared up for him. What a beautiful reunion.
Word for word, Exactly my comment thanks for re-writing it ,thanks Astrid
Billy has the rare ability to articulate the things in life that are profoundly meaningful to creative types in such a straightforward, relatable way. As a '90s child - my first show I ever went to at 10 years old was Smashing Pumpkins in 1995 at the height of the Mellon Collie phenomenon - it's so cool to be able to watch these kinds of videos now. They really have come full circle, and it's a beautiful thing
Great story and if the new album sounds like Gish then we all win.

I like seeing shit like this because Billy and James actually look happy.
Great guys.
WOW I LOVE WEEZER AND THATS SO COOL
I saw you play this guitar in 91 at the now long gone I-Beam on Haight st. Hole opened up. There were about 35 people in the audience and, in all honesty, I was forever changed by the experience.
corey fisher Man I remember the I-Beam! Those late 80’s-early 90’s were such a fertile time for music in the Bay Area. I remember Primus playing at the Nightbreak.
Lucky.
This is such a crazy story. So happy for you man!
Nothing funnier than Billy mentioning that they're recording the next Smashing Pumpkins album which is "very much a guitar record" and every single they've released recently is synth pop
did a real 180 there bro
all i could think was maury saying ‘the lie detectors determined that was a lie’
It's ok to change styles while writing. Maybe if you stay back in the 90s you'll be happier. The rest of us will move on
@@cdreyes81 i don't have a problem with them recording synth pop (even though their newest album kinda sucked), i mean my favorite band is animal collective and they're overwhelmingly electronic, i just think it's funny billy called it a "guitar record" when it ended up not being one. stop being a weird dick
I hope it inspires him to create Gish, Pisces Iscariot and Siamese Dream style music again. That was the best era. The early years.
Siamese dream is my favorite album of all time
@@bloodboiling3951 it’s an AMAZING record. Sonically joyous and tragic. A roller coaster of emotions in that album of pain, loss, anger, and love.
Got into the Pumpkins with Gish but Mellon Collie is my favorite album by far.
The raw energy and angst of GISH makes it my favorite. Best is a subjective term.
@@doctorsteveb4906 Gish is my favorite. Only tour I saw them on.
Stealing somebody's instrument is a whole kind of different low
Seriously shitty thing to do, but even worse, there's always the chance someone had no idea what they were stealing, and sold it for next to nothing, which would piss me off even more! Especially because some instruments are literally irreplaceable, you can't put a price on that exact instrument, no matter how common!
I'm ashamed it happened at one of my most beloved local venues
my college roommate had his violin stolen out of locked storage at the school. It was a visiting professor and it apparently wasn't the only school he had done this at; the same guy my roommate had suspected from day one.
wow, a professor@@jamesoxford4260
@@jamesoxford4260 I find that hard to believe but then again I don't know you. Why would your roommate even take a chance at using/leaving that at school knowing what the value is and where it came from even if it's in locked storage? Was it a stradivarius?
This video makes me smile so hard inside. And Billy's joy is priceless.
I saw SP open for RHCP with Pearl Jam at Roseland nyc in ‘91. Glad it’s back home.

That sounds like a fuckin dope concert
I saw that tour when they came to DeKalb IL.
@@MrJackal43 no you
Caught the same tour in Burlington VT.
My thoughts exactly!!!
I think he means the volume 2 of SAOSB

Yea that makes this next album, got me thinking its hopefully gonna be like gish and siamese dream had a baby
He's said that about every recent album, guitars guitars guitars, it's never the layered wall of sound style we all crave though
I had Gish on Cassette. Then Siamese Dream was one of my first CDs... those were the days.
Siamese Dream was my first CD. That and the No Alternative compilation. Best memories. 😌
Almost shed a tear at "Drown" intro
drown almost sounds like a love song about this guitar . "no matter where you are ..."
"all of those yesterdaze --- coming around." drown in thee guitar sound !
it's almost too much
Drown is how I ended up in love with them.
"No matter where you are
I can still hear you when you dream
You traveled very far
You traveled far, like a star
And you are..."

Reward if found.
The universe works in mysterious ways, bringing things together and sometimes, back together.
I got the chills when he started playing Siva. Probably in my top 5 of my favorite SP songs.
Seeing Corgan get this back brings a tear to my eye. Pumpkins had such a massive effect on me in the late 1990s.
One of the most underrated guitarist ever.
The guitar sounds on Vaseline by Stone Temple Pilots were set up for them by Frank Zappa and Billy Corgan. Not to be underestimated in my opinion, more like iconic.
How is he underrated? He isn't Hendrix but certainly not underrated.
That does have a beautiful tone i understand why he missed it.
“I feel like we’re on antique road show”. Billy. “ yea ok cool”
I stopped the video at that (came back to it later thou ).
Such a wicked story, with a very happy ending almost 27 years later.
Yeah they certainly seem more like the old Pumpkins again.
Such a beautiful and sensitive person. I love his introspective view on life. Long live.

things that made me happy in this video:
1. Having the gish guitar returns!
2. seeing Billy and James together in this video!
this is basically new reasons why I love this band so much! ❤️❤️

Nice to see him and James 😁
Those riffs - that sound! I listened to Gish pretty heavily while attending college in Chicago circa 1991 - right as the band broke. That guitar is absolutely something special.
You can see in Billy’s face the joy and memories coming back to where he started from and I’m glad there are people out there who were just as happy to give it back to him !! Curious to see if this guitar will reflect some of his new material on their next album
Its nice to know how buzzy his guitar sounds. I can hear the strings rattling in the saddles and the frets and I can relax about my guitars making these sounds.
It's completely normal, but it's all about your pick attack. The lighter, the less noise. Some people are just heavy handed... But it's normal.
Listening to Billy playing drown in the end... magic :)
back in the 90's i was a wee adolescent in college. the Smashing Pumpkins were so rad and wild and downright dark. very much innocent yet quite ironic too. 27 years later, Gish is reborn.
I miss the 90's...I must have listened to Siamese Dream thousands of times. I still do from time to time; it is in my top 10 favourite albums.
This plus the OG Muff and the SOUL JCM800 head and BOOM! InstaGish! Hope that combo ends up on the record.

I remember when Fender did a Billy Corgan Stratocaster a few years ago, that people were going "Huh, I never saw him as being a Strat-guy!"
The truth is that he hardly played anything else.
As someone who saw them live early on...always a strat. James played les Paul's.
@@nickfanzo I saw them during the "Adore" tour and Billy was playing a Black Gibson ES-335 and an Ibanez Universe seven string for the whole show and James was playing Gibson SG's which sound brighter than Les Pauls.

So Billy at first said that his reverend was tweaked to sound just like his strat but just to make sure, he had his crew fetch him his Blue strat. Billy plugged it in and there it was: THAT sound.

I've been playing for 21 years now. youngest brother stole my first guitar for drugs. Still the only guitar I miss. Everyone has a special love for their first.
His guitar playing greatly influenced my own. And I literally didn't realize it until this very moment. So many deep open notes floating over dissonant but melodic power chord type stuff. Always have loved his playing but didn't realize until now how much I rip him off, lol! Glad you found your lost love, Billy! That's a story everyone can love.
It is a little strange, and almost fated that he'd find the guitar after he reunites with James and the others.
I was at that show in 1992! At the end of the show the drummer through his sticks out into the crowd and one hit me in the eye socket. I had a black eye for a week. I still have the stick.
I remember being in my car driving home but I would circle the block so that I could continue listening to Gish. Such a distinct sound during that era.
Crazy to see this, I saw a few ads on the Detroit Craigslist of people looking for Gish and trying to get in contact with anyone who had info for probably the last 6 months! It's incredible it actually resurfaced and wasn't altered or anything.
