Honestly, these are some of the better animatronics that I’ve seen. They’re pretty character accurate, and they managed to make the mouth movement look pretty okay.

I think it’s also because around 2001 to around 2003, those designs of the characters were considered outdated and Nintendo was starting to give the Super Mario cast a fresh new makeover into the modern 3D designs that we all know very well today (other than added texturing and higher quality).

Based on the way the puppets are moving, I think they're controlled with Waldos (remote controls that work like operating a Muppet). Their right arms don't move so the mouths are probably controlled with the right hand while the left arm is controlled by the puppeteer's own.
I can tell you for certain that the Smash Ultimate props ended up in Nintendo New York's upstairs portion. They were there when I went back in November.

They answered that the puppets were in perfect working condition in some warehouse in Redmond, Washington. Then one day, a restoration company asked Michael Curry Designs if they would kindly donate the puppets to them to fix them up and put them in a museum, and they said yes. So the puppets are now in perfect condition. Both functionality wise and aperence wise in a museum. The search is over.
