I've had Haglund's Deformity since around 2014. It started around the same time as my plantar fasciitis, and I believe my high arches and wearing heels daily is what caused me to get both, plus I was also in CrossFit, which was a lot of pounding and pressure on my feet. I'm very fortunate to have recovered from plantar fasciitis without any surgery, shots, or anything else beyond some serious massage therapy to my legs and feet, along with constant stretching, at least three times a day. I've even managed to reduce the size of the bumps on both feet, and that makes me very happy. I continue to work to reduce their size and regularly stretch. I've also stopped running, mostly due to my podiatrist telling me that my high arches seriously impact my feet. Thanks to you, Dr. Jen, for sharing your video on proper foot and toe stretches because they really helped me improve my stretches and overall foot care.
I’ve been dealing with this for over two years. Diagnosed as insertional tendinitis, I was referred to PT, which proved ineffective. Saw an orthopedic surgeon who placed me into a boot and more PT with a different PT, who had a totally different approach from the other therapist and incorrectly diagnosed my issues to be related to plantar fasciitis. Of course, with no progress, the surgeon recommended surgery. I sought out a second opinion and he recommended surgery also, but I expressed my reluctance. He recommended that I were heel insets and more PT. The next PT had a third approach which concentrated on less stretching and introducing the calf strengthening exercises that your video showed. At this time I seem to have finally turned the corner. My experience leads me to believe that the heel lifts and concentrating on strengthening the soleus muscle proved most effective. I should add that this experience, particularly with PTs was quite frustrating. And, of course, the surgeons are generally interested in performing surgery! I appreciate you taking the time to provide this video and I believe the treatment you promote would be. The most effective in resolving issues.
As someone who's had this for over 20 years. I've tried everything & nothing has worked. Next stop surgery & I can't wait, it's finally getting sorted.
I've deltt with this same thing for 15 yrs. The pain became unbarebal. I'm 3 wks post surgery and the recovery is very tough. Mentally, emotionally as well as physically. One day at a time.
I had surgery (right foot) 80 days ago and I must confess that it was not resolutive. I keep doing excerises. I play padel tennis and I played recently for about one hour. After training I always feel inflamation that tends to decrease (never desappears) in the following days. What about you?
There is a way to heal it without surgery. Thanks God i manage to remove bump in natural way. First thing many dont know thet when you deal with haglund you need to find what cause it because in 90% it will come on bouth legs.
I had surgery for haglunds on both feet over 30 yrs ago. About 8 months ago I hit the back of one heel on a chair. Been through months of physio, anti inflammatories, massage etc. nothing helps. If I push through certain workouts it slowly gets worse over the next 24 hrs. Squats flare it up a lot. So happy to hear you mention barefoot shoes. I have been wearing them for about 3 years now. Dr and physio both said try “better” shoes. I lasted about 10 seconds before the pain was unbearable. I see surgeon for consultation in 2 weeks. No idea what is going to happen.
I've been doing massages, icing and stretches. Running is off the table, but I still want to keep my legs strong. What I'm trying to do is scissor kicks. If I do them with a heavy blanket over my legs, it adds some extra resistance and doesn't put pressure on the back of my feet.
Thank you for the informative video! Few days ago I had sore heels and felt a bony growth there. Was doing some research (I know I should have went to the doctors) and came across this deformity which matches the look and symptoms perfectly. I don’t wear high heels and used to dance ballet all the times but have only recently picked up bouldering. I don’t think the bony parts were there few days ago… May I ask how long does it form and how long does it take for the pain to be relieved (I heard it won’t really decrease in size right?)
It usually takes a long time for something like this to form (if it is truly a bony growth) and as far as changing the symptoms, that can vary for everyone. You could see a difference in 6-8 days but it could take longer than that depending on what you're doing.
I have haglungs deformation in my left foot since six months though i noticed the bone protruding a few days back. I get pain all day once in a couple of days. Pls help
I had this problem for years used creams for them pain insoles soaked it now it's in the morning I the heel pain from the bump on the heel I have stretched in the shower. It started after running coming down on the left heel in the morning it got worse . Now its better than it was the bump is still there not as bad as it used to be.
I have had haglunds deformity and a bone spur for a year and the pain wont go away regardless of what i do. Doc is addressing it after surgery to repair a ligament tear. Is there any chance i can avoid surgery?
Definitely not something we can for sure say just through comments. However, we take the approach that there will always be different things that you can likely do to continue to support the area and relieve some of the pain and pressure. Not sure if you have tried working with someone in person, but that can always be a beneficial place to try and get a more directed plan!
So I don't wear heals, mostly barefoot or flats. I'm not an athlete I'm a stay at home mom with multiple autoimmune issues and children with other conditions. I'm always on the go but with RA I don't have a lot off range and no money for gym or training. How can I determine why this is happening so I can work on it
I have corrected club feet (pes eqinivarus, corrected through the ponseti method). I wear prescription orthotics, stretch 2x daily, and am a daily bike commuter. Massage, stretching, calf lifts are part of my life, as are orthopedic and stabilizing shoes. I don't run, wear heels, or walk barefoot. But now that I'm 50, I suddenly have Haglund's, and my regular mild foot pain has gotten worse. My orthopedist has told me not to stretch (!) and to take 600mg ibuprofen for 10 days. He made it seem like surgery is inevitable. Is there any way to keep my fallen arches and deformed midfeet from getting worse? I know and do all of these stretches. I massage my legs morning and night. I do yoga. I walk as much as I can.
For the fallen arches, it sounds like it could be helpful to work on mid foot stability exercises. Like working on your own arch muscles. We have some great self-assessments and exercises in our barefoot mini course that could help! You could get get a discount with code OPTIMAL10 too: jen.health/barefoot
I have this soft lump on back of heel and tried everything you said in the video but nothing help i feel very sharp pain in the back of heel please help!!!!
I've had mine for almost a year now. With regular attention, it's gotten better, but not gone away. I don't think the lump ever goes away, but the foot can maybe adjust and heal. There's other informative vids out there for exercises and home treatment. Two that I find particularly beneficial are standing on tiptoes and holding for about a minute, the other is to stand on one foot for about a minute. Both strengthen the tendons and ankle. Do that a few times a day. See if it helps.
Hi thanks for doing this topic, I’ve had haglunds deformity for many years now and I can’t tell you I am in so much pain, burning pain shooting pain and if you knock them the pain is so bad, and the size of them they are massive I am under the hospital but they won’t operate due to my diabetes, I do stretches and some exercises that the physio gave me but nothing is helping I’m just in a lot of pain and my walking Is really bad I will try some of the exercises you have shown but doctor says in stuck with them
I have this deformity but never wear heels. I have been an athlete since my youth... I've got legs for daaaaays haha. Thanks for sharing this conversation!! Edit: I have very very high arches too, checks out!
Its nice and informative discussion. I have been suffering from plantar fasciitis for 2/3 years, recently Haglund's Deformity has been noticed at my right leg. I am an amateur badminton player. Because of this hill pain I stopped playing recently. I am 49 years old (male- weight 77kg 168 cm Hights). I am keen to get your suggestion for relieving the pain of my hill. Thanks in advance.

That sounds like an amazing way to comfortably add some load!
