Casio CA-53 Calculator Watch - My In Depth Review of a Classic Which is Still Available Brand New

  • This watch (and/or another one which looks almost exactly the same) has been available since the 1980s. In fact, an earlier version of this watch was the same one worn by Michael J. Fox in the movie Back to the Future in 1985. Effectively, you're looking at a watch which has been in production for almost 40 years as of the time I'm making this video.
So what's so attractive about a watch that has made it a viable product so for many years? I think that, even today, it seems to look like a futuristic watch (somehow) and it's almost a badge of honor for geek culture (if such a thing exists) to have such a device. Or, perhaps, it's just fun for kids to have a watch like this... so much fun that they're still making them after all these years.
Currently, there are a few variations of this watch on the market. They're available with different colors of the cases and watch bands. And those are generally watches which use the reverse LCD or "negative LCD" readout. I liked this one because I generally prefer the normal style LCD screen on any watch.
The CA-53 has been available with different modules over the years. This CA-53 uses module 3208 and the complete instructions are available to download from Casio's website. When it's time to change the battery, this one uses a CR2016 lithium battery.

This is technically my first watch. My dad bought it for me, but the first day I wear it to school, a teacher confiscate it because it is a calculator, and we're not allowed to bring one to school. But when my dad come to take the watch back, the teacher casually said its gone, somebody took it, and never in any way offer to try to replace it. Its always a bittersweet memories of me feeling very excited of my first watch, and the heart break of realizing that I've lost it forever. And yes, I saw that same teacher wears it a few years later during a retreat, feeling pretty sure its mine. My dad replaced that with an f91 a year later, this watch still with me until this day.

Back in the day, I suppose there were lots of engineers with pocket protectors to hold their pens and pencils. I rarely carry a pen anywhere but maybe a calculator watch is still convenient and much more useful than pens and pencils these days.

Nice little thing. BTW: The "E" at the end of the result stands NOT for "error", but for "exponent". 12356.78 x 55555 is indeed 68.58641E (all digits would be 6,858,641,412.9).

Hello Greg. I’m a fairly new subscriber. And I have always liked G-shock. I’m a watch collector and (WAS)exclusive Mechanical and automatic. I started to add the less expensive Casio’s and also the G-shock line up to my collection. How silly not to. They add a whole new dimension to my collection. After all 10 years battery life will all those functions for many times under $30 and for a little more a G-Shock with atomic time keeping and solar for under $80-100 not many other brand-name watches you can get that with also good quality.
Thank you very much for opening up my eyes 👀. Love your reviews. You have a very relaxing voice to listen to. Keep these great video comming. I would also be interested in other watches you have besides casio or G-Shock.

The CA-50 came out in 1984 and was discontinued around 1988 when the CA-53 came out in 1988 which added water resistence. It's probably why the CA-53 was used in BTTF Part II because the CA-50 from BTTF Part I was probably no longer in production after 1988, so I guess it's not really an error on the films part as even though BTTF Part II was set in 1985 it was filmed in 1989 and they probably didn't keep the original watch filmed in BTTF Part I. Although if you watch the end of BTTF Part I when Marty opens up the garage door to find his new 4X4 to him and Jennifer leaving for the future with Doc, and compare it with the same re-shot opening scene version from BTTF Part II you'll find Marty isn't wear any watch in that closing scene from BTTF Part I but he's wearing it in the re-shot opening scene from BTTF Part II so there's an error on the films part with that one. Another fun trivia is that if you watch the TV show "Family Ties" you'll find Michael J. Fox' chartcher (Alex P. Keaton) wears a calculator watch throughout most of the series (Season 2 and onward), although it's hard to tell if it's a Casio CA-50/53 or even a Casio but the watch he wears looks a lot like the one he wears in BTTF. Look at this picture from around Season 4 (1985-1986) as it does looks like he's wearing a Casio CA-60: fair.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/alexpkeaton-poll.png
