Golf | Grip The Club In Fingers Not Your Palm

The worst mistake you can make when gripping your club is to have the grip too much in your palm. When the grip is in your palm, you’ll have less leverage and mobility which can keep you from hinging your wrists properly, and can cause an open clubface at impact. Ideally your grip should run through your fingers not your palm. To ensure this happens, let your arms hang down with your fingers pointed at the ground. Then point your fingers back behind your heels without moving your arm. Now, place the club through your fingers and take your grip while ensuring the pad of your hand is resting on top of the club. By gripping the club in your fingers, you will gain more mobility and leverage giving you the ability to maximize your clubhead speed.

If you can get the grip under the meaty part of the inside of the palm and leverage it with just the first finger on the grip, that is all the pressure needed to hold the club. Then gently apply the thumb and other three fingers and the right hand. My instructor years ago said that meaty part is the big muscle in golf and that this is the way to achieve the “grip it like you’re holding a bird” that Arnie talked about.
