number 6 is definatly my favorite
mine is drunken sailor
Mine are Sally Brown/Roll Boys Roll, Rio Grande, and Bully in the Alley
Drunken sailor, my parents always said that what their mom woke them up with
Leave her johnny will always be one of my favorites
major nostalgia vibes from when I was a 18th century pirate
Maybe you were.
"back in my day when i was a pirate"
Only 1800s kids will remember this
i'm sorry this was on 69 likes but i had to liked it :(
@@dagamon357 it is... acceptable
This brings me back to the days of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. This was awesome :)
That's still to this day one of my favorite ac games, only tied with ac 2
Yeah, Black Flag was a pretty great game
Not for me reminds me off my great grandpa who sang these on his boat while in the navy during world war 2.
@@madsanimalsandfungus5375 ah thats sad
he had to fight in ww2
Same here, can I get it on PS4? Cuz if I can you can bet your ass Im getting it before anything else, I absolutely love the game
Edit: just got back from Google and am sad to see that I cannot get it on PS4...BUT, I can get it on switch, so that's good
Reminds me of my days as a merchant Captain---sailing a modified frigate, optimized for the storage of large amounts of cargo---in the summer of 1775, trading Tobacco and Spices, between the Colonial-American port of Boston and the English port of Plymouth, across the Northern Atlantic...
Such a profitable route was only destined to be revoked from us, it was only a matter of time; and so time proved too that that was the case. The following of that year came the American Revolutionary War, which was declared on Britain by the Continental Congress in 1776. With such tensions rising, any and all trader vessels that belonged to either of those nations was to be robbed the privilege of trading between their ports.
Only a few months after the route was closed, and through many stressful negotiations, we managed to locate a route between Jamaica and India that sold Tobacco and Rice at a decent price. Though the new journey established many new, terrifying threats within our life, such as the vast distance between the two ports and an excessive amount of Piracy; but, in the end, we managed to suffer through those hardships, given each other, and the time that it gave us to bond as a whole, singing shanties and various other jolly tunes.
Now that I am recalling those days, I realize how much that I took for granted: every drop of the sea that gently caressed my face as the sea spray splashed up from under the bowsprit; the calling and cheering of the Officers and crew whenever we sighted port; the sweet, tangy scent of Ginger and Nutmeg rising up from the hold each and every morning; the steady flapping of the canvas sails as they billowed in the heavy winds; and the many drops of sweat and tears that ran ever-so gallantly off of our faces as we weighed the anchour and heaved the bracing lines.
Such days that I very much wish to return to...
Not me just now realizing Blow The Man Down is the SPONGEBOB THEMESONG
holy fuck you're right
I swear I can't see it
Much much slower, and not directly recognisable as the same tune
if you play it at 1.75, yeah it sounds like it
Because most if all of the music from spongebob are sea shanties and inspired from sea shanties
I want to thank Assassins Creed Black Flag, Sea of Thieves and of course Spongebob for introducing me to som of these amazing shanties
I want to thank Nathan Evans and the Original Wellerman group (the longest johns or something
My personal top 3 out out these 10 Shanties in highest to lowest order are:
1) 'Leave Her Johnny' - this shanty is traditionally sung on the last day of a voyage before they disembark, referring to the ship as 'her' (ships were referred to with feminine pronouns in Western English culture), and 'Johnny' being the name 'John Doe' is typically referred to a hypothetical man. It's an extremely deep and emotional song with a perfect mix of happiness and sadness, and it gave me the chills when I first listened to it. It can also be heard in Assissins Creed 4: Black Flag!
2) 'Spanish Ladies' - being one of the oldest sea Shanties dating back to the late 18th century, is an established British navy song believed to be inspired by the Royal Navy aiding Spain's resistance to France during the War of the First Coalition. The song describes their departure from Spain to the Downs, and the troops departure from their Spanish wives which they managed to marry during their expedition. It's meant to sound like a carefree drinking/rum song, but I can hear a tinge of sadness in there too.
3) 'Rolling Down To Old Maui' - this song originated in the 19th century, and is a whaling song that refers to sailors hunting Kamchatka bowhead and sperm whales near Maui in the Hawaiian Islands where the whales were known to gather at certain times of the year. This song is also heard in an Assassin's Creed game, 'Rogue'.
There's obviously more info on these songs which I'd encourage you to research! It's actually very interesting.
Nostalgia vibes back in 1758 when I was on Edward kenways ship and fought with him together in the seven seas
@Edward James Kenway aye
Leave her Johnny could make a grown man Cry
IM NOT CRYING YOU ARE!!
“Leave her Johnny leave her...
... tomorrow ye will get your pay-“
The video I did not know I needed until now
Good shanty, sir!
Much obliged!
I was rlly hoping for “bones in the ocean” by the longest johns, it’s not as popular of a shanty but i think it’s great
Yeah me too
i was waiting for it but it never came :(
Imo its my favourite
@@soulofcinder4222 it can be used as a shanty, it sounds like a shanty, so I just call it a shanty
@@soulofcinder4222 a song sung on a ship I know there are more specific versions of shanties but I just generalize them all together as “shanties”
i love how he puts the letter names on it bc it’s makes it way more difficult when they don’t bc a lot of times you can’t tell until it gets the note so thats highly appreciate. at least by me
So, apparently, when you convert a shanty to an intermediate piano piece it starts to sound similar to nursery rhymes. Interesting...
I didn't have nursery rhymes as a child. Only shanties.
@@JonPumper You had an amazing childhood then :)
@@JonPumper i envy your childhood
@@JonPumper Your childhood was one of the greatest

Leave her Johnny always hits different
Sea shanties are awesome and have always been some of my favorite music! This is an incredible arrangement of some of the best!
This was really well arranged! Sounds great thank you
I feel like there is missing some of that high momentum shanty energy.
Cause of the piano... Voices are much more emotional (and powerful*)
Well you aren't completely right, piano can have a lot of voice. He just chose a lot of these songs to be soft... which is kinda weird considering they're sea shantys but whatever
@@merekcook573 yes you're right, sorry I don't speak english very well and sometimes I don't know how to explain what I'm thinking 😅
@@clement.r9396 why are you apologizing to a dude on the internet 🤣, that never happens
But you are right it's a lot easier to put power in a song with your voice. As someone who plays on pianos, there's there's limit to how loud they can be and commanding
this is basically a The Longest Johns piano compilation :P
Pretty much
Awesome work! Can't wait to learn this!
Great job on these - especially Leave her Johnny! If you ever post a full version of that rendition, I'd definitely grab it.
It's really awesome😍. I'm already looking forward to play it and hope, that I can buy soon the sheets for it🙏😊
awesome video, love the last one
The best piano version of randy dandy-o I saw on youtube
ok so some how i never saw this video go up! this is so good!
well...aactually turned out well on both my accordion and melodion! Great job :)
I often hear this themes in irish punk songs! Good job! )
Just realized William Taylor can be shortened to “Billy of T”
No OMG that’s so smart!!
I'm glad I found this underrated gem c:
Great piano skills
Do Africa by Toto as Sea Shanty lmao
Santiana is my favorite shanty. Very underrated
Never heard these songs before untill now, they sound pretty cool, also, are u going live tomarrow? (Wednesday)
Yes I am! In about an hour as I type this. :)
I'm so sorry but I get irritated when it's spelt wrong but here we are- tomorrow, Wednesday. Sorry-
You had never heard Druken Sailot before?
When you realize the background image is literally my fucking desktop background
Small world
Do you have the link for that image? It would fit like a glove for my RPG setting :)
I want that image too
So many notes!
idk but I think Bink’s Sake would fit really well into this category
Its actually too old for this list, you shoulda seen it for yourself, like me, OH but i dont have eyes, because im a skeleton! YO HO HO HO
I love it
Wunderbar
I didn’t realize it until I heard this medley, but my life has been devoid of shanties! How could I let this happen?! Thank you, for now I’m whole again. #ayeayematey
Haha thanks Lauren! P.S. Elise just posted her first video on RUclips, using this music! An octopus speed painting - ruclips.net/video/9Wi_9d5NS50/видео.html
@@JonPumper What?! COOL!!! I didn’t know she was doing that! I’ve been lost at sea apparently. 😜 I’ll check it out now!

@@laurenanderson102 it's fresh off the boat! Just pulled into port this morning.
I can feel the musicality, I don't know how to describe it. Maybe the dynamics, maybe the timing. However, well done
there is still one big shanty left. Made popular by AC Black Flag, Edward Kenway‘s personal related song, Lowlands Away.
My master plan:
1. Buy one of those blow pianos
2. Learn a couple of these
3. Hide it in a bag
4. Sneak it in to the water park
5. Play it in the wave pool
I’m proud that I know almost all of these
Personally, the 1 out of 10 shanties is bully in the alley, because it is like pretty catchy like being in church and such, it just like takes me back to times when I was a toddler that I use to listen to music from raffi, I guess, I'm not really sure
Great one! Do you have the sheets for these?
Edit: Even for sale, if you will
Damn, I really want to start the mission, but I also really like this sea shanty.
Sea Shanty 2 isn't on this list. I'm rioting!!!
I'm begging for full versions of these lol
2022 and i still love this song as f***
1:27 god it’s beautiful you can be sure imma learn it
Fucking same aye, almost sounds like some shit from "how to train ur dragon" i reckon
I just have to keep subscribing to patreons for midis lmao
Sea shanty tea is number 1, always.
Why is this Wellerman song suddenly poppin' up everywhere!?
Tik tok
It was on SNL today. I just became obsessed with it
Bc Venti made it famous
I don’t know but I LOVE it. I’ve started to learn it on piano.
It’s getting annoying now...
Don't mind me vibing to this
These make me nostalgic for Newfoundland lol
(P.s., listen to the hard and the easy by great big sea for much of the same vibe!)
Do you have sheet for this ? I wanna learn it on piano.
Leave Her Johnny on the piano sounds really close to something you’d hear on the Titanic film score.
my keyboard just got stolen this week. Missing learning these :(
That's rough, buddy
Which program are you using? Is it a modded version of Synthesia?
Randy Dandy o, drunken sailor and Spanish ladies are my favorite ones....
I’d pay for full versions of Spanish Ladies and Old Maui.
3:40 - 3:42 that's pretty similar to pirates of the Caribbean
drunken sailor is magic
So ture
Wow! Do you have sheet music available as well?
I've sung about all of these whilst sailing with me lads on the Sea of Thieves. Good times, good times
Is that game on steam and how much is it ?
Smh missing the best ever: Sea Shanty 2 from Runescape
its the top with Wellerman
ahhh, i miss the 18th century. good times, those were.
Wellerman and Spanish Ladies is the best! )
No Druken Sailor
Anyone know where I can get a piano sheet music book filled with this stuff
3:28 ACE
My top 3:
3:the wellerman
2:randy dandy-o
1:drunken sailor
Even tho im into heavy metal and djent. This is still amazing music
Wellerman is a hit now and should be higher
Ship o' hoy!
You did some good gems like Spanish ladies and randy dandy and old moui and leave her Johnny.. can we get santiana, the curse, oak ash and thorn, Johnny I Hardly knew ya or off the sea.
8000th like😁
1.25x speed sounds heavenly🥺😍
I’m proud to be able to say I can sing all of these...lol
apparently the top 10 sea shanties are tiktok wellerman, classic drunken sailors, asscreed 4 sountrack and old maui
Wellerman is not Tik Tok
hmm 2 notifications about sea shanties in a row
You know, these songs and stories make you realize that we where born in a time with so many restrictions and all the exploration done for our planet. We where born to late to explore Earth, and too early to explore the universe. Thinking about that makes me sad.
people are still exploring the deep seas, and as for the solar system and such, we are now in the golden age for space exploration give or take 20 years
@@nimbostratus6870 Yea, and our savior is Elon Musk, who contacted aliens and that's where most of his tech comes from. lol. But on another note, I guess your right.
I like to think the exploration has just gotten a bit more abstract.
We may not have tons of unknown physical things that we can explore, but we have plenty of unknowns.
Any musician writing a song is exploring which notes go together.
Any storywriter sets up a world's systems, and then is simply the one exploring the world, writing the story he sees along the way.
The artist is never certain of what their painting will end up looking like, but they go and find out anyway, one stroke at a time.
Curiosity is about the act of finding the next. All you gotta do is pick a space to look. Whether that's physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.
argg!!
Randy dandy ❤
Can you do “Perfect For Me” from Trolls World Tour? Pleeease!😍 It’s one of my favorite Dreamworks songs!
Randy Dandy Oh is my childhood
could you poste a link for the medley-sheet
Full version of leave her johnny?
Sea Shanty 2 Runescape?
It's 1:00am why am I watching a video about sea shanties
Just realized "drunken sailor" has the same motif as "we shall sail together", an OST from Sea of Thieves
So how “original” is it really?
Where can I get the sheet music?
Leave her Johnny is the story of my life, except I'm her.
Did anyone ever realize how much blow the man down has the same rhythm as the spongebob theme song “who lives in a pineapple under the sea” but without the spongebob squarepants chords
Same song, spongebob used it as it was a sea themed song and ya cant copyright songs from the 1700s
This video should be titled "pirate songs in court dance form"
my favorite shanties that arent here are roll the old chariot and haul away joe ^-^
What’s the picture?
Lol no clue if this song is a reference but I live on Maui
imagine this played by me, a non experimented musucian with a melodica.
Everytime i listen i just want to go sailing...
