- Have you ever wanted drone footage of yourself but don't have friends who know how to fly? Well the crew at skydio may have the answer. A few weeks back i met the Skydio crew at an event in Moab, Utah. After playing with the drone for a day and asking them way to many questions i was hooked haha.
Luckily they needed a little bit of help spreading the word and doing some testing so they were able to send one to me to play with at home for the next few weeks.
I have been absolutely blown away with how easy this thing is to use and capture great footage. I know there are some good videos online showcasing its capabilities but I wanted to provide you guys with a fully raw start to finish video to see exactly what you can expect.
I hope you guys enjoy, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Like I said, the footage is at 1080 x 60fps, i just wanted to try that setting and see what it looks like since a lot of people don't have computers capable of editing the 4k footage. I will do some more videos soon and those will all be in 4k but this one was just to showcase the drone and show you how easy it is to get up and flying.

That was the best example of the beacon I have seen yet. Heads up, the jumps would have looked much better had you got the Skydio to film from the side allso 4k or 2.7k. You have just sold another 10 thousand Skydio 2 for Skydio.

This ABSOLUTELY BLEW ME AWAY...I just crashed my Mavic Air in tracking mode from behind and on a little trail run and it ran right into a cactus!! This thing handled all corners and pretty much kept you in it's tracking. That beacon remote is a dang cool feature. Fun ride, awesome video

I love mountain biking, technology and flight... The melding of these coming together in perfect synthesis is awesome. I can't wait to see more! Beautiful! "Alexa, drone forward, Alexa, drone backward!" lol. With micro SD Cards being tiny, maybe they could make a Skydio R for Raven, a pocket drone with hands-free voice assist built into the beacon.

That 1080P looks fantastic ! What a game changer that Skydio 2 is ! I am a dirt bike rider and ride alone much of the time but l want people to know how fast l go but have no video or even still pictures of me. I raced for many years and hope that 36 mph is enough to keep up over some of the trails l ride . The beacon should guide it to me if l get to far ahead ! Great video !

What would be really cool is if they made the wand thing voice activated so you don't have to get it out your pocket mid flight to change the direction it follows you.
On another note. This drone is phonomonal for the use you put it through in this video. But I wonder are there enough mountain bike trail riders, snow boarders, boating types who would buy this to make it a commercial success? I think the regular drone guy may still opt for a dreaded DJI or better still, an Evo. As they wouldn't use the follow me function that much. which is the skydio2 selling point. There is no denying though. For fully autonomous flight. This is a true game changer. Although I can see someone printing some 3D legs for it in the future after they have gone through a couple of layers of skin and front props.

Thanks! I really appreciate the kind words. Yeah the only post editing I did on this one was trimming clips in Premiere and then exporting via the RUclips 1080 preset. I really like the beacon control since it allows you to make simple changes while riding. That's pretty rad and it's fun to see that there's a significant improvement to auto-following on drones. I'd love to see if that thing can follow you in the trees down Mahalo or dry creek. The footage is still pretty rough to watch for a significant amount of time since it's so wobbly. I really look forward to seeing what these things can do once people learn more about them and tailor the settings to get the best performance out of them.
Yeah I’m really excited too! Gonna keep playing around with settings and see what I can do to make it as smooth as possible. I think the 1080 @120 might be the ticket but I’m gonna play around with it tomorrow. I’ll keep you guys posted!
Outstanding. If only my Mavic 2 Pro could do this.... So fortunate that I've got my Skydio 2 order in on Batch 1. The shot I thought most effective was when you drew the S2 down low, just in front & to the side, so it flew backwards, whilst hopping over the bushes. Very cinematic, to coin a phrase...

Been looking at all the videos of the Skydio 2. Four years ago me and a buddy bought a cheap Syma dorne (No GPS) Lots of fun in a small area, but we got tired of that fast.
This year we bought a Holystone HS700 as we love to fly the drones. Now we're talking about upgrading to the Skydio 2 for next summer 2020.
We're going to wait until some first customer reviews come out.

Chasbro Chas like you I am waiting for more reviews although I did order it. Ship time is sometime in March. Thus far from all reviews on the skydio2 have all been pretty much the same, AWESOME with a lot of potential. Nothing negative or glitches from what I have seen thus far. It’s definitely a winner unless someone can find any flaws.

Kyle Warner saw that. I don’t expect the skydio to scramble eggs and make a pot of coffee all at the same time. Although in time, i have confidence it will handle all sorts of obstacles rather well. It can only get better from here.
I'd like to see that same route, but using visual tracking with the phone, to see if it does it any better (or worse). Also, I'd like to see you try to lose it when the phone is tracking, to see what it does if it can't find you. Nice video, this and the one thru the trees are really selling this drone for me.

Good to see you’ve got one after your prior vid.. 👍🏼.. Only constructive, love the footage and test. The fast sections made me sick (LOL), maybe follow from a further distance as some of those switchbacks were abrupt in the video. Plus it will allow us to see the setup and whats coming. Curious what editing software your using and what your output is set to. Like the last vid the fast action seems to be low frame rate so it looks jittery, maybe RUclips is to blame. Hoping your experience setting tweeking the edit can help others when they start doing the same. 1080 looked good though, and great to see the drone control.. looking forward to your next vid..
Yeah I totally agree, I think i am actually gonna try using the 1080p x 120 setting next and see what that looks like and then maybe try using the 4k 60fps with the drone a little farther away and then using the crop feature in post production to get the action a little closer. Ill let you know what I find out. It definitely looks a bit better straight from the sd card but I think there is room for improvement regardless!

Hopefully the software, will eventually let us pre program a shot position; based on GPS or timer
(( based on your mountain bike run ))
Example Savable Pre-Planned Mission file (downhill4) : (30 Second Countdown to execution) Starting with 120 seconds film from directly behind, followed by 45 seconds of higher but from left side, followed by 150 seconds at 10' off ground, and directly in front of subject
Then when crossing a bottom of the run, into a new geo-fence zone, run new angles, like an orbit for 60 seconds (viewing the the joy, crossing the finish line)
All happening without the 'operator' touching the beacon, or controller/wand
Will users be able to download the sensor imagery post flight,
or is this only accessible to you with proprietary development tools

Amazing footage! While watching the downhill part at few sharp turns, I am thinking that maybe skydio team could add reading-path into their firmware update so that those sharp turns video clips could be more smooth (it a bit make me sick). Thank you for the sharing. i'll subscribe

Realy great technology for a drone action camera. Also as b-roll footage for a project. I could see for surveillance and mobile situationally awareness data. But not as cinematic footage, something about its viewing of flight video makes for a nauseating experience. It has its nitch like other drones. My interest would be the use of Skydio using the RC Remote option. I am very curious about how Skydio 2 performs under stick control. Current experience with DJI drones when the obstacle system is active, the drone will either stop and hover or with limp around finding a path around the impending interference (APAS). Will stick control allow for Skydio to quickly fly a solution around an impending interference and get back onto course? In other words, if pilot stick flies through woods, If the pilot were just to move "forward-stick" only, would Skydio 2 fly that course as it avoided all impending obstacles flying forward? Instead of a human pilot navigating flight realtime and relying on the obstacle avoidance as a "backup safety feature" without the intention of use.

I would like to see what happens when it gets 'trapped'. For example, when it when behind the trees, what would happen if it never 'saw' you again? Would it go back to where it last saw you and try another route or just stay where it is and hover?
Eventually if it got completely trapped. it would hover until the battery was low enough and then us the obstacle avoidance to land itself

Thank you for this video - Such a robust tracking - unbelievable !!!
It seems though that during the DH at tight fast switchback it has some difficulty centering the rider in the frame and the camera following was kind of lazy and laggy - maybe the high frame rate actually was not a good idea and lower fame rate would have introduced some motion blurring to make those fast sections more cinematic.
BTW, is there a way to set up the Camera's Shutter speed ?
Please post next MTB video at 4k , I don't think the 1080 does the camera justice plus RUclips video processing on top of that.
I find that uploading 4k to RUclips provides always a much better result.
Hey there, thanks for the comment, Yeah i have played around with frame rates a bit since this video and it seems like the trick is to use 4k @60 and fly the drone a little further away than with 1080 and then in post production crop in slightly. The motion blur is annoying for sure but I think my export presets were part of the problem as well. The skydio team reached out to me and provided me with some presets to use and I should have another video uploaded tomorrow! Fingers crossed it looks better!

I’m curious if you changed the settings on the newer video that has Skydio in the trees, I watched it yesterday twice but today when I try to play it I get a message saying I can’t play it on my device ? I know it 4K but that really should not matter as far as I know correct ? Love your Skydio videos keep them coming !
Try again and let me know, it looks like youtube maybe pulled it for a few hours to audit it but it seems to be ok now?

Very impressive, like having a skilled pilot follow you. I would love to use this for windsurfing and snowboarding videos. Does anyone know where I could download some raw 4K footage? I would like to see what it looks like after grading.

@@AprilRideMTB RUclips doesn't currently support 4K, so anything uploaded is automatically converted to 1080, making it impossible to download 4K directly from RUclips.
What! SD card for Log ?? is that mean I can load any log into the drone?? like Sony s-log ??
I think its more of an sd card for the logs to be written onto as the drone flys

Flight time has been averaging around 24min per battery!

Really great video, owesome drone. When its block or lost signal, or being left away to catch your speed, what is the drone doing? Is it stay there? Return to home?
You can set it to do either!
I never understood the idea of catching a drone vs letting it land. Clearly people like to do it.

Skydio has those under the arms props. I guess that is a good reason, but uggg finger chop hazard.. The long legs of the Phantom and the prop wash just before landing sometimes it topples over. So those long legs make a nice safe recovery handle.
I use to hand launch and catch mainly because if you take off from the ground you kick up a ton of dirt and the lens gets covered with it. And there’s nothing worse than getting the shot with the dirty lens
haha just for style points and added danger! No, i just catch it cause its a tiny bit quicker than waiting that additional few feet, probably not smart though haha

Impressive, yes! But is it good for photography and landscape video or does it just do " Look at me! " video?
Yeah it seems to be great for photography too, Shoots in raw format and has the ability to independently adjust shutter, iso, and exposure!
