Our animated historical series on the Ottoman Wars continues with the siege of Rhodes of 1522. By the early XVI century the famous Crusaders from the Order of the Hospitallers controlled Rhodes and became a constant threat to the Ottoman naval dominance and economic interest. New sultan Suleiman I, who would be later known as the Magnificent just took Belgrade and opened the road into Europe, yet he needed to take control of Rhodes to secure his flank and that led to the siege of Rhodes in 1522.

Hello man, I'm student of history and you are helping me very much in my studies. I saw in your videos about ottoman wars, in some of those there are around 100,000 forces from ottomansz wich my professors are saying it's hyperbolized number. What's your opinion ?.

I visited Rhodes a few years ago. Incredible array of history in such a small space. Ancient Greek Temples, Crusader Castles and Ottoman architecture all in clear view. Great video!

Hah! I'm just making a video about this period, glad you guys are also interested in the Renaissance. A little additional info: in fact the Venetians were quite happy to trade with the Ottomans. The problem was that Portuguese activity in the Indian Ocean nearly put a stop to the spice trade coming from India. The trade in exotic spices was the most lucrative business in the 16th century, so to counteract the Portuguese, the Ottomans decided to build a fleet on the Red Sea. However lumber for the fleet had to be brought in from Europe. This is where the Knights of St. John come in. Their piracy was so effective, that only half the lumber reached Egypt. This is why they needed to go.

Quick correction.There is a one mistake at 11:50 The Grand Vezir at that time was Piri Mehmed Paşa. Çoban Mustafa Paşa was the Serdar-ı Ekrem(Commander-in-Chief) and he never became a Grand Vezir. Best Wishes keep up the great work!

I would like to give a shout out to the great comments on this channel. It seems to be one of the few that seems to be absent of any politics or nationalism. Visited Rhodes few years ago , and saw different areas in the old town with English quarters and Spanish quarters but could not work it out. If I had watched this before it would have made my visit so much better.Love this channel and keep up your amazing work.

I think it is truly impressive how the defenders of Rhodes were able to hold on against overwhelming odds as long as they did, particularly when the force arrayed against them was one of the most technologically advanced of the day. The lessons of Rhodes surely determined how the Knights of Saint John were able to defeat their Ottoman adversaries in their final enclave in Malta, where instead of consolidating all of their forces into one fortified locale, they were able to control several key citadels and fortifications which bled the Ottoman forces dry. Furthermore, it meant the Ottomans lost more time in attacking the individual bulwarks and, as such, the Hospitallers were able to receive desperately needed reinforcements from Spain and Italy.
Amazing job. So much time and effort put into these videos. All respects for that!

Very Nice video, I visited Rhodes about 10 times, last time this summer and have propably visited Every ins and outs of the castle/walls, bastions etc.
So only point I find a bit dissapointing is the lack of actual pictures/footage of the fortresses, walls, huge moats, huge bastions, etc etc which are all still standing and alot have been rebuild.
The architecture of the defences is immense and Almost unbelievable that gives you more respect for the builders But Also the attackers who had to breach them. I have seen the spot where the wall collapsed, which is now rebuild and what a meat grinder it must have been.
For anyone who likes medieval architecture, fortresses, castles, temples, churches, mosques, rhodos is the place to go, it has everything!
Just look up some footage of rhodos city, it is beautifull.

you forgot to mention one member of the ottoman dynasty living with the knights. he was considered to be a probable threat to the succession in the future like cem before him. that was also another prompting reason for the siege of the island. after the capture, he was executed.

There is 1 wrongness in the video. at the time piri mehmet pasha vas the great vizier of the ottoman empire, Mustafa pasha was only a vizier. its actually Piri Mehmet pasha who saved Mustafa from death they ll say.

well Barbarossa actually took the algeria by himself. After this he entered into ottoman service as an admiral.
No he didn't take it solely by himself.He asked for guarantee of protection and further military assistance against spanish in algeria and Tunisia for defending castles.With that help he was able to secure Algiers in 1516

@@davimattos7081 Hello Peixe Coruja I shall explain In the original Suikoden ie # 1 the events of the Rune Gate wars take place. In the game at the start we are told that the glorious capital of gregminster has been restored to it's former glory all because of the efforts of the emperor (Barbarosa) since he won the Sussion War 7 years ago. It's not elaborated on any further in game, but the Succession war was a massive war fought 7 years ago when the emperor died and Geil Rugner usurped the throne, much like suikoden 5 Barbarosa had to flee the capital & after a long war where 2 of Geils generals were killed (Kretuz was the only survivor & hid with the knights of the dragons den until the events of the original Suikoden) the war was ended with the total defeat of Geil's forces at Kwaba Fortess and the sacking of Gregminster. you can get more information on suikoden.wikia.com Scarlet Moon Succession War. ps I hope this helps Phan was a common soldier in Geils army. Cleo fought too gremio also fought.

I don't know what Rhodes is or means to anyone, but to me it's home, I'm proud to be born and living in such a wonderful place. I live the history of the place every day, you have to visit to understand what and why Rhodes is and was so special to so many people in power through out history. I'm blessed to have a wonderful home called Rhodes.

Wow I never knew this but the hospitaller had possession of 4 Caribbean islands and the 4 islands were Saint Kitts, Saint Martin, Saint Barth’elemy, and Saint Croix and the Knights Hospitaller gained possession of the islands due to the orders close relationship with the French nobility and the presence of many French administrators in the America’s.

The siege of Rhodes and Malta are intertwined in the history of the Knights of Malta. The knights never considered Malta to be their permanent home and clung on the hope of recapturing Rhodes back because Malta by comparison was cramped and rocky. But after the massive success from the great siege, there was no question that Malta had to be their permanent base.

The possibility of Shah Ismail seeking peace especially with Selim is low:
First, he was a Shia, and he didn't believe in the caliphate system because the Shia branch of Islam believes the power has been taken from the righteous ruler (Ali the fourth caliphate in Sunni Islam and the first Imam in Shia Islam in his descendants) and those who ruled and their successors are usurpers. Moreover, if you see his actions especially towards Sunnis, then him seeking peace with a Sunni makes no sense.
Second, he saw Selim as a rival and his most dangerous enemy, therefore he would have destroyed all his kingdom than making peace with him.
Third, most of the Abbasid caliphates were puppets and after the fall of Baghdad by Hulagu in 1258 no one cared about them anymore.
Well, the sources are conflicted and that is why we mentioned it. :-) Iranian sources claim that the war was concluded in 1555 with the peace of Amasya.
Unlike Sunni sources, Shia sources are untrustworthy
Shiaism is a mixture of different religions, mainly shaped by ancient religions of Iran manichaeism, zoroastrians, mazdeism, yazidi and influenced by buddhism, judaism, christianity. Fundamentally Islam stands out with the notions of "servitude"and "good deeds", while Shiaism is based on the concepts such as beatification and holy men (like Sadhus in India) demonstrated in practices like "Ayetollah", "Velayet-i Fakih", "Imamet", "the lost Imam" etc. For example Ayetollahs (the sign of God) are considered manifestations of God on earth (similar to how christians believe Jesus is an embodiment of God). Ancient religions of Mesopotamia had a belief that something holy would always show itself in the form of a human and would have a higher understanding of reality which ordinary people cannot grasp (mazhariyet theology). Such pantheistic beliefs have spread into the Shia cult forming into "Velayet-i Fakih" which is also referred to as the "papcy doctrine of Iran". Mainly implemented by Khomeini, this belief states that only high ranking Ayetollahs can comprehend the truth, can perceive the world accurately and can truly understand the esoteric purposes of religious rules. By doing so Ayetollahs are able to cover up and justify all their decisions with a "divine meaning". Belief in reincarnation has also influenced the Shia cult through Hinduism, and also adopted from ancient Egyptian and Assyrian religions which are also strongly associated with Jewish Kabbalah. Reincarnation in Shiaism is called "Rij'at". It is believed that "the lost imam", the 12 imams and some other Shia saints will reincarnate at a time when evil is at its peak in the world. Reincarnation is very apparent in the Alawites (Nusayri) a branch of Shia in Syria Superstitious as it is, they believe the reincarnated "lost imam" will bring back to life Abu Bakr and Omar (first Caliphs of Islam) and have them executed :) Notable perversions in Shiaism include a practice called "Mutah" (temporary marriage contract for money) where they literally cover up prostitution under a religious mask. This practice has been derived from the Mazdek faith in which people are expected to share their women and wealth (Mazdeism is considered the sociological ancestor of Communism). Many Ayetollahs in Iran and Iraq have issued fatwas (rulings) stating that "women should not refrain to support pilgrims and Shia militia by offering their bodies to satisfy the sexual needs of fellow Shia men". This perverted practice is in unity considered haram (forbidden) by the Islamic world, and would so by any moral human being. The trinity concept found in christianity and hinduism can also be observed in Shiaism, especially featured by Shias in Syria and Lebanon (Nusayris & Fatimids.) Trinity in Shiaism is a direct manifestation of Yarsanism which was practiced in Mesopotamia not so long ago. In the Yarsani tradition, the world is governed by three diety brothers (masters of the sun). Hence you see in some Shia branches "Allah-Mohammed-Ali" trinity faith, actually many Shia attribute Ali to be God. Cursing is also commonly practiced by Shias as their ancient religon zoroastrianism's dualism concept is based on "blessing the good and cursing the evil". However in traditional Islam "cursing" is refrained from and evil should be avoided rather than cursed. Along with all of the above many similarities can be found between Judaism and Shia practices and beliefs. The main one is they have both distorted a monotheistic religion. The Knights of St John have an incredible history, even in this second siege of Rhodes where they ultimately surrendered in order to protect the lives of the citizens of the island. They did engage in some piracy against Muslim ships but far more commonly defended Christians from Muslim corsairs.

"They would kill and massacre the citizens of Rhodes" I don't know what source said that , however it's wrong because it goes completely against the sharya islamic law that Sulaymen was applying very carefully and strictly in his empire .By the Way it's not the first time some sources have tried to give fake information about the Ottoman empire and other islamic empires , it's a very common thing in European Historical Books
Malta is remembered for the siege of 1565 and for winning the Axis in WW2. It also played a part in the Napoleonic war where the French were locked in the fortifications and defeated after two years. Can't wait to see it.

You definitely have to make a video about the siege of candia. The longest siege in the history of humankind. It lastet over 21 years. Sadly this siege doesnt gets mentioned too often. It was the Ottomans vs venice from 1648 to 1669.
