  • After years of trying to fit the pop star mold, Demi Lovato is returning to her rock roots with the volume turned to max for her eighth studio album, ‘HOLY FVCK’.
In an honest conversation with Zane Lowe, Demi talks about losing herself to find the person she wants to be, confronting past trauma in her songwriting, growing up in the industry, and dealing with survivor's guilt. In this next chapter, Demi is owning her voice and excited to perform her new record and older hits on her next tour.

As a fan, someone who has witnessed all of Demi's ups and downs...its beautiful to see them in the best place. They looked happy during the last era, but it was clear they hadn't completely healed and should've taken more time out of the public eye. This new album is a very vulnerable, authentic body of work. The media and general public hate demi for problematic behavior and being too honest about their lives. Humans are fundamentally flawed, but they deserve so much compassion. I'm very excited to see where their 30s takes them in terms of music and healing.

As a much newer fan... (it was the DWTDTAOSO era which made me sit up and take notice of Demi Lovato) and I absolutely adored the musical output (and the person too obvs), which really really deeply resonated with me... so I guess it made the long journey getting here worthwhile. I can't wait to get stuck into this interview and the forthcoming album, Hit Me!!! 🥳🥳🥳

It's a business she's supported for years and simply made a call to action to get them to change something. And it had nothing to do with "healthy snacks," it had to do with diet foods, such as items marketed as "eat me guilt free" which she perceives as something contributing to diet culture. Now personally, I still find it dumb, but let's not fallaciously make her out to be some villain, when in reality, she was trying to do something for the betterment of society.

People flip so fast. A few months back it was hard to see any nice comments about her anywhere. Now everyone is commenting nice things… people need to understand that things aren’t black and white and we can’t go from one extreme to another. She is a human and chances are she might say something again in the future that doesn’t sit well with people and we shouldn’t flip so fast into haters because of that. I'm sure she knows that... but the point is that SHE feels more like herself and a lot happier now that she's making the type of music that means a lot to HER. It makes HER feel like it's more meaningful because she's writing these songs so people can listen to them and hear who she really is and what she's feeling NOW. She said several times that she was very unhappy during that time. She felt like she lost herself. It doesn't mean she thinks her "mainstream pop" songs don't mean a lot to people, or to her, it just means that she's much happier with what she's doing now. I think the only thing that really made her look bad was the yogurt shop situation. She became triggered from sugar free yogurt trying to shut them down. As someone also in Ed recovery she took that too far as sugar free is for a wide range of issues. But that all stems from her just needed to continue to work on herself and educate herself. Everyone that’s hating her for her discovering her pronouns and what she feels comfortable with. They will always find issues with anyone changing their pronounces because they just don’t understand. If she wasn’t open about her struggles she wouldn’t be hated on. But she’s still helping so many people who also are struggling. This world is nuts.

This was a reply to a comment that was deleted, but I think its important to realize for the people who think shes too wishy washy or unauthentic for the way she shares her story with every album
Like she said, finding herself has been put under a microscope. I'm sure there's been a lot of pressure to make it seem as if everytime she's improved that shes finally figured it out all the way. And because shes been so demonized between her addiction and also for struggling to pin point that identity, its going to be a far more complicated process. Shes been in the public eye since she was a young teenager, there isnt a sterotype that childhood actors go off the rails for no reason. With managers and the public constantly pushing for her to be a certain way, of course its going to lead to a lot of inner conflict and cyclical behaviors that are hard to break. I'm sure she wasnt the only person pushing for her to make it seem as if shes finally got her life figured out over and over, she has a whole PR team helping with this stuff and people love transformation stories. When most celebrities do those though, its often when they're around her age she is now, not all throughout their twenties. I guarantee the biggest reason it was pushed for her to do that stuff was because her PR team wanted to change the narrative that she was a hopeless addict. And even if it wasnt pushed by the PR team, expecting her to not share her constant struggles of finding herself over and over is also asking a lot when again, shes been in the public eye since she was a young teen. Yeah it may seem wishy washy, but anyone throughout their twenties will seem that way if they're genuinely working towards improvement and finding themselves. A lot of people dont even start that process until their 30s, so of course they'll seem less chaotic in their changes when they do the work all at once, and since most people in their 30s are just more stable in their lives in general, there often isnt the added complications of additional discoveries that lengthen the process of overcoming and facing trauma/yourself. Yeah she has money and so she has the access to professional help of the highest quality, but that doesnt mean that she automatically improves to her highest self instantly. Even with all the money in the world, identity and self improvement doesn't naturally come with financial success. It has to come from within, it happens in multiple cycles within someone's life, and it is a process that takes a lot of time. She is human even with the fame and money, and is going to make mistakes in understanding herself, but unlike you and me, those misteps are broadcasted to the entire world. Of course there is pressure to seem like every time shes evolved, its for the last time. I think its important that she continues to share her inner struggles despite the judgement that comes along with it, because I know too many people who refuse to change or let people into their lives during change, purely to avoid the exact types of comments being said about her.

Very very true! With everything I've done trying to realise who I am myself at 27 years old its hard! I love Demi for being who they are and their beautiful singing voice and not being afraid to embrace who they love be it a man or woman!
And, was difficult for me to do, but 1 month ago I came out to my best friend, and I told him I don't think I'm straight... it was tough, but I feel abit more comfortable in who I am (that I'm attracted to both men and women)!
You're very much correct-change doesn't happen overnight, it takes time! :)

Zane Lowe is such a GREAT interviewer. And I've seen a couple of his interviews. Like, we got to give more flowers to journalists and interviewers that do their "homework" and they know how to ask questions without being offensive or invasive. It should be the standard. Here in the US I find that people that do interviews are always looking for the gossip, or to shade and shame the artist. We need more of this in mainstream media, a casual conversation about the artist, their craft, and even personal matters without a sense of judgement. You can see Demi feeling comfortable addressing any topic and part of it is because of how beautifully Zane handles sensitive topics and how flexible he is in terms of "I'm not going to force you to answer every question". Bravo!

I also think with the changing landscape in popular music genres ( it definitely helped Demi that in the beginning popular music (and Disney music) was still relatively pop-punk before late 2008/9 when it switched to pop electropop ) it was a smart business move for her to switch genres otherwise she would’ve faded into obscurity.

When she released Dancing With The Devil Art of . . She was neglecting her past work and said things like "I can never preform my old songs again cuz that's not me anymore." or whatever she said.
But now going back to the rock genre, they/she switched away from how they/she was acting and looked at life during the previous album era. And that's probrobly had alot to do with the fact that they/she wasn't sober and wasn't healed enough to get back to work. That's what I think atleast.
