I just ran into this problem and I ended up doing exactly what you did - but then I started doubting that it was a good/legit way of doing it but now I feel like I’ve done a solid job!
What a professional! At first I thought you should brad nail through the side then I thought "Hey the manufacturer did not do that why over engineer something." Thanks.
That's great. I'll be doing a pergo flooring install in one of our rooms, and have to cut two doors. Not sure if I'll run into wood, or hollow, but this is great to know. Thanks.
My mother wants me to make a dog door in a door exactly like this. I just don’t want to f*** it up. I appreciate the video. Using the tape is a clever trick!
Great video, have a home made door at the moose lodge I have to replace. Just fell apart, you have really helped with the replacement door. By the way, how many miles has that tape measure got on it?
My father-in-law lost three fingers reaching across the path of the circular saw blade like you did at 5:35. I don’t recommend it. Sorry to darken your day.
I just subscribed! I’m just wondering since it was going to be cut across, why was there a need to use the stud finder? Do I need to purchase this machine in order to cut the top, middle or bottom section? Thanks.
I've just had carpets fitted now I need to cut down the doors but they've already been cut down past the bottom piece of wood so it's already at the hollow part , how will I cut it down ?
1.) Do you "score" the backside too?....seems you only put a pre-cut score line on the top side. 2.) Typically....how far "up" can you cut on this style door and still retain the bottom edge?
I may be overthinking this. When you score the door before cutting it, you use a knife blade, which is very thin. However, the kerf from a skill saw is much wider than that score from the knife. This seems as though the knife scoring is unnecessary or should I be cutting with the power saw with the kerf lined up directly over the knife score or adjacent to it?
Your right .It seams like no one does what they say they can do. That is why I like to do almost everything myself . I keep very busy doing work for family and friends. All for free. If I can ever give you any advice just ask.
Why didn’t you just trim a little from the top and bottom and not go through all that work- both sides have solid wood and would have made this project way faster
Only thing I suggest on this video everything looks good but instead of wasting 5 to 10 minutes shaving off the little pieces of cardboard on that bottom strip you can simply just cut one Edge on an angle with a razor blade super simple and then tap it in all at the same time and you will not need glue you will not need to sand it and it's finished
Thank you for posting such a clear, informative video! Exactly what we needed to see and follow for our DIY project.
You are so welcome!

Thanks
You’re awesome!
Well don, thank you.
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub.
Thank you and I want to know how to cut the side
It is the same procedure but on the side.
Great video, have a home made door at the moose lodge I have to replace. Just fell apart, you have really helped with the
replacement door. By the way, how many miles has that tape measure got on it?
Glad it helped. Yes it has been around for a long time .Lol
I assume you trimmed the top?? If i am fitting good second hand doors that are slightly to wide, do i need to trim the hinge side or the handle side.
I cut a decent piece of new timber to fill the hole as lots of hollow doors use crap knotted timber as it's cheaper for them .
Thanks for watching. I'm happy to help.
What kind of blade, please?
My father-in-law lost three fingers reaching across the path of the circular saw blade like you did at 5:35. I don’t recommend it. Sorry to darken your day.
I just subscribed! I’m just wondering since it was going to be cut across, why was there a need to use the stud finder? Do I need to purchase this machine in order to cut the top, middle or bottom section? Thanks.
No need to buy the stud finder. If you cut off the bottom you will just need to install the bottom piece of wood.
Great video. You said I could use a jigsaw? Do you have a link to that video?
I just added a link to my video for anyone in the future but here is the link for you. ruclips.net/video/R9HnzvfrMd0/видео.html
Would it hurt anything if you just left the bottom open?
Yes you need to put it back in the bottom or the door will just crush.
So i assume it is the same process if making the door narrower?
Yes it is the same. Thanks for watching.
That is a serious accent my man!
Thanks for watching
I've just had carpets fitted now I need to cut down the doors but they've already been cut down past the bottom piece of wood so it's already at the hollow part , how will I cut it down ?
You can use a circular saw or a jig saw but you will still need to install a piece of wood on the bottom after you cut to size.
Could you taken some off the bottom and top to keep from doing all that extra work
Yes you can.
If just a little is taken off top and bottom, are there any special finishing touches needed?
What if you have to cut the width of a hollow door by a 1/4 of an inch
what type of blade is in the skilsaw? I am surprised it just cut through the tape and did not gum the blade.
Actually it was a gross cut blade. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to sub.
1.) Do you "score" the backside too?....seems you only put a pre-cut score line on the top side.
2.) Typically....how far "up" can you cut on this style door and still retain the bottom edge?
The "solid" part of that door looked to be about an inch thick.
I have the same question about scoring both sides of the door!
I scored only the top side, turned out to be a great, clean cut.
circ saw cuts with "good side" down, will tear out through the side facing up, so not necessary to score the bottom.
Would be nice if you said what kind of blade you were using on your saw
finishing blade would be best.
Hey Jim, is a 24T framing blade OK for this job as long as I protect the trim with blue tape? I'll be using a 7 1/4" Dewalt
24T blade worked great. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge!
Yes that will work. Thanks for watching.
Can someone tell me what type of Circular Blade do I use for this cut? thank you
I always use a fine tooth blade for this kind of cut . It causes less chipping of the cut.
By using the knife it will minimize the splintering of the cut area. Thanks for watching.
Score with knife then just keep the top of your circular saw blade on the score line .
What about the sides?
What is your question?
Great video but I do not understand why the door was scored.
To minimize the splintering of the wood. Thanks for watching
Planer
Great job! Can you come to my house, every person that comes to help or claim they can help, in my townhouse seems incompetent once the job starts.
Your right .It seams like no one does what they say they can do. That is why I like to do almost everything myself . I keep very busy doing work for family and friends. All for free. If I can ever give you any advice just ask.
@@getitdonehomerepair I appreciate that. It really shows you are a caring person, even shows in your quality of work.
A discussion of saw blade depth would be helpful.
Thanks for watching
7:00- taking the bottom bums apart. Mine aren't coming apart.
Glad it helped!
Why all the tape?
The tape keep the door from splintering when being cut. Good question.
Can you do that for the side of the door as well? Even with a guide I took too much off
Yes you can
@@getitdonehomerepair ty
Could you just cut a piece of wood that it's if you can't get the wood out clean
Yes you can also do that.
Why didn’t you just trim a little from the top and bottom and not go through all that work- both sides have solid wood and would have made this project way faster
All that work? What do you think you have to do if you take from top?? You’re moving hinges 😂😂😂😂
Helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
