I've surfed with Nathan years ago at North Curly with a bunch of grommets, we spoke about family, life and when Kelly won his 7th Tittle in Brazil thanks to him.
He really appreciated it me remembering that.
Just an excellent human with solid approach towards surfing and life in general.
Thank you guys for this excellent review of his spectacular surfing skills 🙏🏼👌🏼👍🏻

My takeaway is Nathan Hedge's patience on his backhand bottom turn. He drops that back knee in, compresses almost as if sitting down into a chair to engage the heelside rail. He then patiently waits to come round the corner with his back arm bent and pointing forward. As he comes round he eyes up a vertical section on the lip to attack, before getting upside down during his snaps. Amazing backhand clinic by the Hog at J-Bay 👏

I'm a big fan of your videos and I might be missing something but I don't understand why Clayton counts seconds on slow motion playbacks. @ombe can you comment on this? thank you
    keep the awesome work

I was thinking exactly the same but my surfing it's not great to pick on that subject.
I rather watch and learn 🤷🏻‍♂️
      But good point 👍🏻

I don’t think Clayton is applying ‘seconds’ in the traditional sense of timescale per say, but instead using it as a common language/format to highlight the point where the surfer engages the rail and begins the turn to the point of release. Another way to view it would be to picture a rotary dial that starts at 1 and ends at 10 (unless you’re familiar with the rock group ‘Spinal Tap’ in which case it “goes to 11”) most average surfers start at 1 and release at 5 where Nathan for example releases at 10 i.e upside down/inverted and utilises every bit of wave energy available then sets himself up for the next move while at the same time fully restocking on potential energy because he is now at the very top of the wave loaded and ready to negotiate the next section.

I have exactly the same question. But at the same time a lot of respect for the effective use of analogies in all the coaching clips! Great analysis clayton

He's demonstrating that professional surfers commit hard and hold through their turns, they stay on rail for longer getting as much power as possible out of the wave before making their next move.

I've noticed whenever Clayton counts how long a surfer bottom turns for he counts it in slow motion.

I've notice the same thing! He counted 9s, but it was like 3 or 2 s. Anyway, I love those guys and because of that I ignore his counting! Lol

That's great guys - getting a specific surfer doing a specific thing better than anyone else and how they do it!
