  • "These baroque composers knew the instrument they were writing for," says Alison Balsom. Her album Royal Fireworks captures the joy and solemnity of this dazzling musical era, through trumpet works by Handel, Purcell, Bach, and Telemann. Discover here: wce.lnk.to/rfLY
"I’ve been making recordings for almost 20 years and this has been by far the most enjoyable recording experience I’ve had," says Alison. "The music is full of utter joy and magic, the versions we play are often new, and in some cases quite maverick. The thrill of recording with some of the greatest artists around, all of us on Baroque instruments, who happen to also be my good friends, has been a privilege."

There's no need to apologize for your changed conception of the music of Telemann. It is a pretty complex music that needs a certain understanding and maturity. Sometimes you need to mature to completely understand the inner core and essence of the music.

That final expiration by the artist provides insight into how difficult it is to play with such control and delicacy at an extreme register. Reminds me a bit of Adolph Herseth--huge, effortless sound, but his face would turn beet red all the while.

It looks like it's around the same range as a modern B-flat trumpet and she's playing pretty high up, like high C and a bit above, for a lot of the notes, plus it's classical so it has to be dead-on, no jazzing around, so yeah.

I played this piece this semester as a jury for my lessons on the A-side of the piccolo trumpet. The first movement was always the hardest to get through because it’s the slowest movement the trumpet plays on, around eighth note equals 68 bpm. The entire piece is beautiful, and I loved playing it this semester

@@alexcarter8807 Jazz trumpet melody notes are accurately pitched, as well, and must be that way, even more urgently than for classical pieces. The melodies are usually a combination of chromatic tones and those of the particular seven-note scale.

"Lo, there in the ruins of old Rome, lay a dream, for man, of man, and all of the promises that civilization keeps trying to keep. Mercy, compassion, triumph, ingenuity, sacrifice, reward... how often we have missed the mark, and slide down into the mud again... resting, hibernating to the long clock, the procession of the sun around the moon, and ourselves around our ideals... dark ages, enlightenment, suffering, prosperity, (Perhaps we suffer from prosperity much too often, bereft of humility, aspiring to be gods among mortals, forever fearful of both our potential, and our shortcomings.). Let us rest for a while, citizens, and join anew, that which is to come. "
