@@sultryglebe What often happens is that the last speaker is either given very little time (because not every 1st or 2nd speaker is as considerate as you) and has to drastically shorten their talk, or - and this is more common - the first speakers do not fill their allotted time and the the last speaker has to suddenly expand their talk to cover the rest. While having to shorten can be frustrating, having to speak longer is often very stressful. So what the original commenter is referencing is this idea. Because he didn't go last, he had no stress about how long his talk was going to be. I imagine you have seen actually seen this happen many times.

This "issue" is not about convenience, but about what the order, when it is always the same, implies about importance and hierarchy. I look at Sunday as a day to step away from living in the world. It's a good thing to work, but on Sunday I try to focus a little more on my relationship with God and others in addition to serving my ward and family. It's a good thing to buy the things we need, but on Sunday I try to avoid commerce as a whole. To me it's not about making other people work, it's about setting myself apart from the rest of my week of living in the world, and that makes more sense personally.

I attended the MTC in Provo in 1980. L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve spoke to us and told a story where he was assigned to attend a multi-faith conference. He knew that some of the non-LDS attendees believed that endowed LDS had to wear their garments 24 hours a day and not to be without them under any circumstances. So, when he showed up for a volleyball game in PE shorts and T-shirt it was obvious he wasn't wearing his garments. Some had heard that Mormons who remove garments in that way were under obligation to sever an arm or leg. He said it was humorous to see the looks on the faces of those who'd heard those things when he showed up. Hence, I have no problem when I work out or other exercise removing my garments until I've showered after these activities. I admit I have no problem drinking 5 hour energy shots as needed to stay awake when I study. I drink Coke and Pepsi products. Finally, I'm very pleased with the financial position of the church. It's a wonderfully prudent position to be in and time will show that the church's wealth will be a wonderful benefit to the church, the world, and in accomplishing the four fold mission of the church. Mark my words. As a former bishop and faithful Latter-day Saints I've seen some traditions I considered silly, like only men should offer prayers in Sacrament meetings. I love seeing white shirts and ties on priesthood holders doing ordinances like blessing and passing the sacrament or the bishopric on Sundays. However, I don't like seeing a worthy boy or man prohibited from priesthood duties because they didn't have a white shirt on.

Loved everything in your comment except the last part, about you not liking it when a worthy boy or man is prohibited from priesthood duties because they didn’t have a white shirt on. @@jimbomanzano4785 I think you're approach is a good one. I also think it's important to be careful not to push it too far and become like the Scribes and Pharisees where a rule sometimes outweighs inner worthiness. Just something to be careful about. But I definitely see your point. I guess my feelings are influenced by an experience I had as a ward mission leader where I had helped an adult convert get to the point where he felt comfortable enough to help the Priests at the sacrament table. He came that Sunday wearing a white turtleneck shirt and vest. I messed up in forgetting to have him wear a white shirt and tie. But I figured his worthiness and willingness to participate was what mattered. When it came time for the administration of the sacrament I noticed he wasn't sitting at the table. I found out that the Young Men's President told him he couldn't participate because he wasn't wearing a white shirt and tie. I spoke with the convert later and profusely apologized for the embarrassment it had caused him and told him it was my fault for forgetting about the white shirt and tie requirement. I just plain forgot to mention it to him. This is an example, in my opinion, where the rule became more important than worthiness. Overall, though, I love seeing the white shirts and ties on those who are performing priesthood duties.

    • @joncharlotteschoen
      @joncharlotteschoen 5 месяцев назад

I've always had a huge issue with the white shirt thing. It's not official doctrine anywhere, as far as I know, but rather, based on talks from the brethren in the 60's and 70's. I have white shirts, and wear them to sacrament. However, I also have really nice light grey and light blue shirts that are collared, button up dress shirts that I wear to sacrament. The intent is not to distract from the reverence of the sacrament. As long as we aren't doing that, we are good.

The whole men speaking last is totally a cultural thing. For example, when I served in my bishopric, I would give couples the option of the wife speaking last and most the time the women did not want to. Some would even ask me if it was okay for a woman to speak last. And the idea of finishing the meeting with the BEST speaker is also cultural. Many times the youth talks are MUCH better because they are short and sincere.

    • @gaoagong

What if shipment is a few weeks and so likely that package is going to be in a plane or a truck at some point on a Sunday. I guess just don't buy anything online? The Church's financial situation is amazingly and unequivocally good. For many years, the Church struggled financially. In the very recent past, a global pandemic caused significant global financial strain, and the Church of Jesus Christ was able to support thousands of relief projects without breaking financially. The Church has always made efforts to help people in need locally--I grew up eating food from the Bishop's storehouse--and has had increasing ability to provide relief worldwide, and to do so in a sustainable way. It's all the more impressive considering how many people are donating. It's easy for someone to say, "the Church could do more", especially when they don't see everything that is being done, but whether it's the wisest or best thing to throw more money at the world is another question altogether. We have long been counseled to save money and to be generous, and we now see the Church performing most admirably in both areas. The only real possible complaint is that the Church made a mistake in reporting to the SEC, and as a consequence a portion of donated funds went to pay a fine, but even knowledgeable lawyers make mistakes. Meanwhile, enormous amounts of good are being done through the restored Church of Jesus Christ. It's good, good, good.

The word of wisdom says hot drinks are not for the body. And we all know that Joseph Smith said it was tea and coffee. What do the two have in common? They, at the time, were _hot_ drinks and two, both have caffeine. While I worked for NIH years ago, I saw a number of articles talking about high-temperature drinks being harmful, but not caffeine. I don't drink any hot drinks. Obviously tea at a Chinese restaurant won't hurt you, though drinking it hot may. (I cool mine with ice from my water and drink it warm and with just a tiny amount of sugar.) And I only drink small amounts of Dr. Pepper but that because of the sugar content. But when I go to a Mexican restaurant, all bets are off. Chips, hot sauce and Dr. Pepper are my undoing. But I don't _assume_ caffeine is the reason that “hot drinks” are nixed. I don't even drink hot chocolate with Marshmello when it's hot, and I really like it when it's hot.

7:33 the reason why it is important to be buried in the earth is because it is the same reason we are buried in the water. It is the symbolism. However, the Lord understands the unique circumstances and situations with government so I don’t think the church passes any judgment on a particular person anymore for that. Regarding men speaking last - I believe it used to be a policy. When I get speakers for sacrament meeting, I give the option to the sisters whether they want to be the first or last speaker. So far, 100% of women have wanted to be the first speaker. It's challenging to be the final speaker. I call it the accordion speaker because you have to adapt your talk to what the previous speakers have done. You could be speaking for 5 minutes or 30 minutes. I've dealt with both and it's a challenge. I get why many people don't want that responsibility.

13:27 it’s also celebrity behavior why the man speaks last, because usually the man is the stake president or the visiting authority, or whoever that people actually came to hear speak because they knew he was going to be speaking. It’s a priest authority thing. I don’t think there’s any doctrine that it needs to be that way, I think it’s a default of how people put the most important speaker for last so that people don’t leave halfway through. Which is sad because it’s important that people hear what women have to say too

On the topic or speaking order in sacrament meeting - well, being in my mid-50's now and in the time when the "most important" speaker was last (and that is typically the case everywhere) I don't actually think it's splitting hairs to have an opinion (or feelings) about this topic. My mom was the Relief Society president during the time and in a ward counsel, the bishop began closing the meeting without ever speaking to or hearing from her. She had to make herself noticed. So, unfortunately back in the 1980's and 1990's at least, it was a clear message that women were not at the level of men...who held the priesthood. I've had to work through this inferiority feeling being in church for decades. But then I decided to study what Jesus himself actually said, as well as prophets and apostles and I was reassured. The Book of Mormon states, “black and white, bond and free, male and female; … all are alike unto God” (2 Nephi 26:33). Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ do not make me feel the way my culture has and I'm happy to see that the norms or church culture are changing.

Absolutely right! Totally agree. And there are plenty of comments on this thread that are justifying this speaking order practice as somehow an elevation of womanhood (e.g. she doesn’t have to worry about time constraints, “ladies first,” even “my wife was given the option and preferred to not go last”) unwittingly exposing the inherent sexism in those comments. I’m sure they don’t see it. And how do I explain to them, for example, that women are completely capable of bearing the weight of shortening a talk because the first speaker went too long? Women don’t need to be protected by men from this easy-to-handle constraint. How would men feel if the women were saying, “we will take the last speaker position so that the men can go over their time limit if they need to”? It’s so demeaning and they don’t see it. Not to mention the whole idea that women speaking first is just chivalry is an afterthought anyway, invented on the fly to give a positive twist to the practice - which was never based on giving women more time to speak, but wholly on male superiority. Who are they trying to fool? Even the well-meaning host who brought up the topic of speaking order, didn’t realize that HE asked is wife if she wanted to go last, because we all know that it’s HIS to offer her - not hers to offer him. Props to him, though! I am patient with those making an effort. And things are changing.

I'm pretty sure this video is mostly in jest. I think almost everything you talked about is a personal choice. It's between you and God. People should not be commanded in all things. The church has headed in that direction on just about everything lately. Speaking order may have been dictated years and years ago, maybe 40 to 50+ years ago, but it was more about cultural norms than any doctrine. It's really up to the bishopric who speaks in sacrament meetings and in what order. We do get stuck in ruts. Also, the church's humanitarian aid program is massive. In my local Northern California area, the Bishop's storehouse supplies many food banks that feed thousands of people not of our faith. The church simply practices what it preaches, to save a portion of your income for future needs. The way the church is growing in different areas of the world, they will need even more money to support them.

"Ladies first" not that I care but I would rather go first. Working out in garments.....back in the day, people didn't work out. They worked and they worked outside in the hot summer temperatures and probably didn't take their garments off.

Long before any of you were born, states had “blue laws” that regulated what businesses could be open on Sunday. Until a few decades ago, Americans believed that Sunday was a day to go to church and spend time with family, not shop. I read an interesting paper that tied the repeal of blue laws to a general decay in moral values.

Don't order on Friday because they will end up DELIVERING on the Sabbath.

Lifetime church member here (Southern California area, mostly) and never once have I been in a sacrament mtg where the male speaker didn’t go last - even when the female speaker was older and more educated/accomplished (and frankly, in most of these specific cases, the better speaker). The message absolutely is that the man has the most important message to give - the keynote. It makes sense when it’s a visiting General Authority for him to go last, because he IS the keynote, but in no other setting does it need to be this way. Not at all splitting hairs. I am so glad you addressed this.

I made a separate comment of my own about this - also a lifetime member from Indiana in my 50's. And I agree.

Agree! When I was in a bishopric and asked a couple to speak, I would tell them it didn't matter who went first, and then ask what they preferred. Almost always the woman wanted to go first, but there were a few who wanted the wife to go last. And a couple of times they switched on the fly, which was totally fine too.
But I loved meetings with all women speakers!!

Men speaking last I would say is a tradition but it gives the women as much time as they want and then the guy will fill in the rest or short his talk up to make the difference 😂
