“F…ing sex cult!” referring to Joseph Smith. Thank you for this quote! This is exactly how I felt about Joseph Smith from the very beginning of investigating the Mormon Church. I had so many people justifying polygamy and Joseph Smith’s behavior. I felt it was my fault for not having enough faith. I was RIGHT all along.

Talking real and honest without guile or guilt is not something acceptable in Mormon culture. That is why, when people leave it is so dramatic because it is very difficult to remain at any level or as a "Nuanced Mormon." As a "NM" you will feel like either not-measuring-up OR damaged goods in the society. I raised my family in the Twin-Oaks Valley Ward, served in that bishopric and in the stake high council, until my dramatic exit of the church in 2014. Almost ten years later I am so happy and see "The World," as my human family, the good and bad parts. My life is so much more balanced, real and joyful. 😊

As I watch exMo videos, while the most successful American scam implodes, I find myself grateful that I am not a true church. So much unpaid acting. So many lies. So much history to alter and bury. So much arrogance and pride. Policing normal humans is not possible. Pity the only true church. So tragic. So wasteful. So dysfunctional.

Thank you for sharing this story. I found it very interesting. I'm a new listener, so this may be addressed somewhere that I have missed. My hope is that while Jamie deconstructed his LDS faith, it provides an opportunity to discover a true relationship with Jesus. It sounds like he did a good job researching evidence (or lack there of) of Mormonism, but I can't tell if he similarly looked at the strong evidence of Christianity. Jesus warns of false gospels in Matthew 24: 4-5, so it shouldn't surprise us when there are false gospels being preached in our modern era. I'm praying for your journey.

I believe it was on Mormonism Live that I heard the explanation of "Think Celestial" as code talk for only the top leaders going all the way back to Joseph Smith, when talking about how in public, he would justify his plural marriages as "Celestial marriages" and therefor it justified him twisting words when the public would question him.
So Rusty Nelson saying 'think celestial' is really gross because it's a promise to men they will have plural wives, and if their current wife won't share him with others, she will be given unto another man....

I just finished episode 1 yesterday - while I admittedly don't know a ton about the LDS church, there are some parallels with my background in the evangelical church community. l found ep1 very interesting, well produced, and it certainly is giving us all a powerful look into your and Elisha's lives. I love your story. I was on the angry path too when I found out for the exact reasons. My husband didn’t want to hear it. I would sneakily listen to MSP next to him as well and he couldn’t take it. It was a trigger to him. He stopped going to church, but even now four years later we can’t talk about it. That bathroom story is awful. I’m so sad to hear that. I’m embarrassed to ever have loved and supported that church. I left the church 8 years ago and share so many experiences with this couple. I didn’t believe it anymore but thought it’s just what I should do. Married and raising kids. But it was so empty and unsatisfying. Church started to feel like a Fox News discussion group after 9/11 and even tho I wanted to believe and attend I just couldn’t bear it anymore. Trump was the final straw. The church isn’t what it says it is and isn’t even what it was when I was little. There were genuinely kind sweet people that accepted everyone. I thought my parents were that kind of people but they have fallen completely into the Trump cult. They are full of fear and anger and only interested in drawing boundaries and thinking about wars and end times. It’s all so opposite of what I thought we were doing.

I see that too in my last ward and my new ward in a more rural area. They go Republican/Maga without a thought. Benson said years ago you can't be a good Mormon and a good Democrat. What a terrible thing to say. Look at the parties now. Do you hear the church saying hey, Trump is evil don't vote for him, no just "it might be ok to vote out of your party. "
      I can't stand the blindness.

Loved what you had to say at 43:46-44:42 about Mormon's being encouraged to sacrifice the present for something to come in an afterlife, including tolerating abuse by a spouse. I've seen that exact scenario play out in my family to include the abuser referencing Nelson's "Think Celestial" talk to encourage overlooking the abuse.
