- The Doctors are joined by OB/GYN Dr. Thai Aliabadi to discuss the common procedure, LEEP, done to treat precancerous changes of the cervix by scraping away abnormal cells. Some women say this procedure destroyed their sex life.
Dr. Aliabadi states, "If you have high-grade lesions on your cervix, you need to remove them. A LEEP procedure in the hand of an experienced surgeon has minimal risk. You will not have sexual dysfunction if it's done right."

I had this done at 8 weeks postpartum from my 2nd daughter. I was advised to terminate and have it done at 5 months pregnant, but decided to wait until delivery. Thankfully nothing changed in that time and my daughter was born healthy(she just turned 19) I was scared to death on that table, but other than the cervical injections it didn't hurt. I had cramping and light bleeding for 2 days and that's it. I have HPV so Colposcopy is a yearly event for me, but thankfully no more leep procedures. I also went on to have 2 more full term pregnancies, no cervical incompetence and no sexual dysfunction.
Were you awake during the procedure?
Corrica Malcolm I just had mine done on Tuesday and I was put under with anesthesia.
@@Rica803 Sorry I just saw this. Yes I was fully awake during the entire procedure. I wish they would've given me light sedation at least, but maybe because I was breastfeeding they couldn't.

Thank you for sharing. I've been advised by my gyno that if my biopsies come back non cancerous then the next step is leep. Im so worried but your post has given me a better feeling about this, so thank you.
Literally had this procedure an hour ago. It was absolutely fine. I had high grade pre cancerous cells. I’d rather not orgasm than be dead

I agree with you. I’m going to do this procedure this week but I started feeling less desired dryness vaginal burning no orgasm from last year. I hope this procedure takes all the abnormal cells away. I’m not worried about the sex life than having cancer.

Man that leep saved my life. The colposcopy showed only Pre cancer cells. Thank god I still got the leep. Leep found my cancer when we thought it was just pre cancer. Hysterectomy lymph node removal later . . Cancer free
Referring to the LEEP as a scraping is very misleading and untrue. Pap smears are scrapings. The LEEP cuts through the cervix with a hot wire. It's not a scraping by any means. The type of pain, injury, and potential for long term side effects related to sexual function are a big deal. Every doctor who performs LEEPs should be aware of this and give their patients full disclosure prior to the procedure.

You are correct, LEEP stands for Loop Electroexcision Procedure. I had it done, and researched the heck out of it beforehand. They use a thin, electrified wire loop and it cuts while cauterizing the affected tissue.
Who are you to say these?
I had this procedure done and I had no problems. I do not worry about sexual pleasure, I am worry more about Cancer. I was CIN 2.

Yay dr Goldstein! He is one of the only doctors doing research on the effects of leep, cone Biopsies etc. Glad they had this conversation however this woman’s story is very dismissed by the female doctor. Many women have lasting physical and psychological issues with leep. Voices must be heard!
She is just worried that women with pre cancer cells will not get treated. With this procedure around 90% of women are cured. Cancer is a dangerous disease. I have had 3 people in my family died of it and it is horrible.

I had the LEEP done 1 year ago. I suffered from everything that woman is also suffering from. Loss of sensation, inability to orgasm, difficulty to get aroused, dryness issues, pain during intercourse, severe psychological disorders that I have had to see a neurologist for such as depression, anxiety and migraines, just an overall change in who I am and my happiness. Its taken a huge toll on my relationship but thankfully my boyfriend is patient and understanding I just hope he doesn't go looking for someone else who isn't broken like me. I wish my doctor would have acknowledged these possible side effects. Even afterwards when I told her what I was going through she said it couldn't possibly be related and I disagree 100%. I was a very sexual person prior to this procedure and I feel like this had destroyed me.

I have this December 2 ,and my period 3 days after I did my mammogram, I couldn't put the liquid till after my period, am having brown discharge is it normal.
This is not to put people off.. but to be fully informed ..
I have had pain constantly since..amongst other problems.. (see the rare side effects) There are people who have had long term side effects following lletz.

I wonder if Dr. Thais Aliabadi asks her patients “after the leap procedure” if they have lost sensation in their vagina and is anything different? Most people are not comfortable having those conversations but If the doctors would ask the patients those questions then some women would talk about the after math.

Can I just say iam one of the blessed one. Had Leeper done 2012., it's 2023 never had any sexual dysfunction, sex life is very normal. Iam sorry for the ladies who have problems with their ruined sex life.

I had this done in 2001. I hemorrhaged on the table. I felt so much pain and faintness on the table. So what was a procedure that should have taken maybe a bout 20 minutes and then go home. Ended up with the doctor having to insert a tampon for me and admission into the hospital.
Since then ive tried to get pregnant a couple times. Nothing. One doctor during a pap smear said he couldnt find my cervix??? The speculum is like driving a screwdriver through me. I dunno if in healing it has prevented me from being able to get pregnant. I cant get answers anywhere. I was 25 when it was done. Im now 44. Dont let this happen to you.

How's libibo, orgram function, sexual function, embarrassing things happen for pelvic exam. Doctors and hospital staff laugh and smile on there face when they putting fingers in side of female patient vagina area before and after pap smear is done. Pelvic exam are not useful screening for healthy woman and can be harmful especially when women been sexual abuse. Pelvic exam are not effective way to diagnose ovarian cancer or HPV and STD. Pelvic exam are so anxiety and inducting or painful that they can even cause healthy woman to avoid medical care altogether. Female patient should have right to refuse pelvic exam when doctors say it will not hurt

I recently had the leep procedure. I got local anasthesia and light sedation because I was nervous. I felt nothing during the procedure and am totally fine now.
Leep can prevent cancer, but like any other medical procedure should be done with care and full disclosure. The pain you described is just so unnecessary. Drugs exist and should be used to prevent pain and stress if the paitent wants them.

Me think she doth protest too much. Doctors always under state or deny damaging effects of procedures they perform.
I had the LLETZ treatment over 3 years ago and have experienced side effects ever since. I'm worried about the impact on my ability to conceive and carry a child but yet to have any answers.

Thank you for educating about this. I was not educated although I asked specifically about sexuality. I suffer from loss of libido, loss of the ability to orgasm like before, loss of sensation, even in other areas like the clitoris, loss of the lubrication in the vagina and so on… and they only took 4mm deep of my cervix! The worst is also for me that I would have decided differently if I would have known that those side effects can occur. There’s alternatives to this procedure that cure cervical dysplasia! There is different options. Please educate yourself ladies.

I had a leep 6 years ago so I know I have orgasms I'm 48 an it made me start my periods regular so this helps ..... An I'm having fertile mucus so all this is wrong

@@gerr8534 abnormal cells and HPV on cervix, CIN 1 2 3 not cancer, had high grade cerval cancer CIN 3 and HPV on cervix, used Eschorotic treatment were put tampons with medication on them put in side of vaginal area yourself. Normal pap smear in year, still got pregnant, didn't hurt my sexual function this is natural ways to heal abnormal cells and HPV on cervix.

You "need" to do this procedure. No, I dont think so doctor. More doctors need to do the Escharotic approach and natural healing. I went for another appt at a gyno and they arent even wanting to do the colposcopy first, they just wanna hop right into tearing off my cervix. NOT doing it.

@DreamseedVR I got a pap smear update and it went down to "low grade" this year. I don't drink, smoke, or eat certain foods, take supplements ect...so maybe that's why mine healed on its own. Sorry to hear about your family friend.
How long does the yellow discharge appear,its been a month after cryotherapy for cervical lesions but the discharge is still there

These procedures can damage the sexual function the same way removing foreskin during circumcision does

Me stage 1 remove it a week ago and my period came down 3 days after I did my mammogram, I put the gel the doctor give me after my period and know those brown stuff coming out .
