I actually recently figured that I needed to start doing this on my own lol. A lot of the time I defaulted to playing rudiments with rebound even when the song/tempo was much too slow and I needed to be playing individual notes rather than muscle-memory-ing it out. I think another great coordination exercise is KRL because it forces you to think clean and consistent due to how obvious it is if you’re off. Love the vid man!
Intention, intention intention. once you get more familiar hearing yourself in recordings you can start to change that lack of control/unawareness "what will this sound like when I hit it" into confident flow where you literally hear everything you play milliseconds before your sticks hit the drums/cymbals.
Great show Nate. I did a fun excercise the other day by just playing every limb at the same time and trying to make a solo out of it. It was good to just play every limb together to help line them all up. It was more fun than it sounds.
I was just watching the original installment of your first free video last week to try to apply it to my practice routine. When I came back to revisit that particular video yesterday, it, it.....it changed! 😲
Play what you mean, mean what you play.. I also loved your bit with Eric Moore referencing the processor (brain). Not only related to speed, but again intent of what you're trying to play, whether it's a groove idea or a fill (simple or complex). And the skip hats exercise is on point, will reveal faults pretty quick if not done correctly. Cheers Nate!

One question though! Great that these great drummers are great in clean phrasing and clean in timing. To what extent though is the band of equal great timing a contributor to the drummers? Ie, a band of each individual having great confidence in one's own timing and not solely dependent on the drummer a "time keeper" versus a band that relies exclusively on the drummer as a time keeper and reference for the rest of the group? The examples shown in this video of clean drummers also showed a band that had cohesion by virtue of each individual taking care of their own business and not just the drummer playing or conveying the pulse of the piece to which all the music is written around. My best experiences as a drummer was when I played with musicians who didn't reply on my for time keeping but in other me to be a rhythmic accent or colour or voice within the composition ya dig
As much as I appreciate clean drumming, I somehow also really liked how the not-so clean ones sounded. Especially with the drum line, in which case I might actually prefer the amateur marching band over the so-called "Blue Devils".
Yea I realized that after I played them 🤣. That's a paradox tho - sometimes dirty stuff sounds nasty. I get into this more in another video, where I talk about the difference between "good nasty" and "suburban feel" which is just rushing and dragging at all the moments that make the song less danceable.
A great example of tight playing is Mario Duplantier from Gojira, I’ve been listening to him for almost 10 years now, I still cannot get over the work he’s done on their albums The Way of all Flesh and L’Enfant Sauvage, this fills and grooves are so articulate, even though they’re classed as death metal, they’re a must to listen to for drummers.
Mario Duplantier is amazing, tbf i think he only classed as a "metal" drummer in the same way that Danny Carey gets classed as a metal drummer. He's got that musicality in his playing that makes it atypical of the genre.

NIce job of showing the difference between linear hand subdivision ( ie good time) and well damn sloppy ones !!! Made me laugh !!! , which is why praticing all subdivision's and combinations against time is soooooo valuable !!!

I use to like clean until I listened to drummers from the 60’s and 70…and of course Hip Hop drummers…. The feel is more organic vs the precise sometimes sterile feel of a “clean” machine like drummer…. A lot of the video’s on youtube feature fast, chop heavy drummers that takes away the purpose of playing and instrument…. Music… Larnell I would say is a Musical drummer.. I remember watching The Buddy Rich Tribute with Vinny, Dave, and Steve Gadd as a teen… I remember thinking “who’s the old guy in the middle”…. I was floor with Dave and Vinny the younger drummers… Speed up to my middle to late 30’s and I watch again and INSTANTLY I GOT THE MUSICIAN STANK face….Listening to Steve Gadd just Massacre the drummer RAW SLAP and UGHHH the pocket was so deep…meanwhile I was lukewarm to the young Vinny and Dave….It was then I understood why Steve Gadd was in the center….to teach the young ones that chops are ok and clean is cool but can you make the audience FEEL something…
I liked this video because I like it but I do want to note I took the like count off 666. Don't want to curse the channel ya dig haha. I'm like number 667 so. Aside from this goofy point, love this channel and content
see here's the problem. From a certain standpoint, nothing. That sloppy football groove sounds correct. But for the narrow example of illustrating the difference between playing cleanly and not playing cleanly, it was the best I could do. 🤷♂️

Learn to play clean and precise with simple beats first. Put your heart and soul into it. Then once you've absolutely perfected it move onto your 68th note quadruplet half time dotted eighth fills.....thank me later!!!
"better" is such a naive thing to say. Put a click anywhere but the one and practice. Then try every other bar. 'Clean' is tangible. Stank isn't. Brian and Nate don't play 'clean'. They have GOOD TIME. It's conceptual and part of a large horizon like the base of a pyramid.
For me your ability to say absolutely nothing in a 9:20 long video is amazing, I've been watching your videos and most of the time you don't give concrete solutions or strategies to solve the problems you talk about, just you describing an issue over and over and again then the same problem but with different words and perspectives, then these shots of other professional drummers playing their stuff and finally some pointless exercise that usually doesn't solve any problem... I hope I don't sound like a hater or a troll, but if you want to talk for 20 minutes on a topic, do it, but do not present it as educational content because it is not PS: by the way I'm pretty sure your drum courses are full of good content but my opinion is about your youtube channel

As much as I appreciate clean drumming, I somehow also really liked how the not-so clean ones sounded. Especially with the drum line, in which case I might actually prefer the amateur marching band over the so-called "Blue Devils".
