Sketching with Pastels / Using Prismacolor NuPastels

- Join me in this fun lesson where I teach on how to use pastels for sketching on regular drawing paper. Often we use sanded papers for pastel paintings, but these Prismacolor NuPastels work great for sketch work on non-sanded surfaces.

This portrait is gorgeous! I just received my Nupastels yesterday! So excited this video popped up in my RUclips feed today. 🎉 I have a picture of my daughter I want to draw and this style is perfect. I am going to start sketching people more so I can get my practice in. My husband and I don’t like the same TV programs so this would be a good way to spend more time with him! 😊 Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for this. There's hardly any tutorials on youtube or anywhere about Nupastels. I bought them without realizing how different they are to the softer pastels. This is the most helpful thing I've found so far.

I love drawing portraits as a hobby, love it, take them off utube on tablet so work to get them correct, fourth inch off makes a difference, erase etc. To get it right but it does
i just bought my first set of pastels because i have recently been very attracted to drawing with color. Colored pencils just weren't cutting it for me, pigment wise, so I looked for something new! This was EXACTLY what i needed in a tutorial and I can't thank you enough! -- Very beautiful art:)

I like amatuerish. Not forever, but I choose to love it, o I wont like me. I am not going to be discouraged or hard on myself again. Everyone starts as an amateure, and some never sell anything, by choice. I am being asked to paint for friends though. Yes drawing skills are important. Thanks for these videos! I like them. I would never forget my NuPastels or Pencils, I love sketching when my sspine is causeing me to have to stay flat ;-) I like your portrit style, too!

I'm trying to get into using a sketchbook so that every time I want to create something it doesn't have to be a major commitment. For such a casual painting it was a good likeness and I learned a lot!

Wow I love the end result, simply gorgeous, can't believe you didn't even need the sanded paper! I've been thinking of getting Nupastels, seeing many people use it in Monet Cafe, but I'm not sure if they are still useful along with Rembrandts, since I have the whole 120 set of them and use those for first layers and thinner lines. Do you maybe know how they compare in terms of hardness? Anyway, good to see you painting again :)
The NuPastels are harder than the Rembrandts, but you might even try using the Rembrandts like this for sketching first. As long as you keep it loose and "sketchy" they should work as well. I have used my Rembrandts so much over the years that I need to get more. They are just a great medium to hard pastel. I am finding the benefit to the NuPastels for sketching is the shape as well as the hardness. You can use the corners for finer lines or the little square edge for broader strokes. I also break them sometimes and use the sides for painting larger areas.
But again.... just play! And try out the Rembrandts first. I bought Nupastels years ago and literally left them in the box because I didn't really know how to use them. I just recently got a set of 96 colors. Have Fun!!!
I have a set of Nupastels that I bought when I was about 20, a set of 36 and never used them🤣. I was “saving” them. I am now a month shy of 70 and have decided that I no longer need to save them for later, later is here. I learned a lot from this video about how to handle them and plan on watching many many more, I have a lot to learn. My Nupastels were made by Eberhard Faber, that’s how old they are, lol. I have been working since March with colored pencils and graphite after going 45 years without drawing. Through trial and error I discovered Prismacolor pencils and love them. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and helping me nudge farther along on my artistic path.
This is so funny. I am 80 years old. I am fortunate to have a spare room for a studio. Art supplies seem to grow and my space got smaller and smaller. I’ve been trying to organize. I’ve found so many wonderful supplies to use that I forgot I had. I’m looking forward to using them to create new and exciting art. Creativity is a gift, a blessing and it’s so much fun.
I agree that knowing how to draw really does help with painting, but that doesn't mean you can't make a beautiful piece without knowing how to draw. I am currently teaching myself to draw, from books and youtube videos...It's pretty hard for me, as I have trouble translating what they are saying to do to the paper. But I know that to get better I need to keep at it.

Way to go :-) I use almost the same materials (that is that I add a charcoal pencil instead of graphite pencil, so I can go total black in the lines and depart from there ) Super explanations :-)
Just a side note, nupastels are water soluble. Very pretty portrait.

👍👍 been told have to focus on one medium😨. Love painting whether pastel, acrylic or watercolor even ink and watercolor as well as drawing. It all melds together, to me a better artist but then these are not artists and have to remember that. Lol, always someone will criticize but then find it's because of envy. To me silly. Love this. Answers questions before asked 😀

Really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for this. I too started in landscapes and have recently moved onto portraiture but have yet to attempt one in color only graphite and charcoal I am going to blow the dust off my nupastels today and see what happens

Looks like you were actually able to get a lot of layers on this. Was that a "mixed media" sketchbook?
This was just a regular sketchbook. I am actually amazed at the layering I can get if I keep my pressure light and use harder pastels (like Prismacolor NuPastels). I typically only use the softest pastels at the end. ;)

l'italiano con N corso di italiano These pastels are harder pastels. They are called Nupastels by Prismacolor. And yes, they can be a good starter set for beginners. In time though, you will want to get some softer ones perhaps. I’ll be happy to help if you have any other questions. Happy painting!

It looks amazing. What kind of sketchbook are you using here? (Meaning weight of the paper and type of surface - is not too smooth is it?) And do you put any fixative or just turn the page? I did a parrot in a sketchbook, 240g/m2 and rough surface. But I had to put fixative in the end, otherwise it would transfer...everywhere basically 😁 and what if you absolutely adore one of then pieces of your sketchbook and wish you had made it in a surface to sell? (Sorry for all the questions, I sound like a 2yr old) 😊

Really mysterious and love the portrait. When you do in sketch book are you going to use a fixative on it? I did some like that and it made imprints on the other page. What do you do if you want to 'keep' it or sell it?
How do you prevent smudging after the picture is done...the sketchbook is closed?
I used sheets of glassine (or you can use tracing paper). It works great!

The nose ( facing mostly forward ) appears to be on a different plane from the rest of the face ( more turned ). I notice because I do this all the time with mouths.
They maybe harder than Unison, Blue Earth and Ludwig but on LuxArchival they lay down beautifully and are much better than pastels costing tons of dollars more. I tried my daughters yesterday and was very surprised at their capabilities.
Fly Fisherman Love your feedback! I feel the same way and often share how Nupastels don’t get the recognition they deserve. They are affordable, less messy and I find the results are great.

Are those the chalky kind or oil? I have a very hard time working with them
scoot mcgoot These are not oil pastels, but called soft pastels. I actually have a hard time working with oil pastels, but soft pastels are awesome and can be quite addicting.

I looked up the price of the Prismacolor NuPastel - but OMG they were pricey: €359,- = $405,- at Amazon. Do you have any idea as to why these pastels are so expensive?

I just watched another video by the frugal crafter and she said that the Prismacolor nu pastels are not very dusty, which would be great because I have to avoid dust.
She’s exactly right. I love her channel. That’s a real advantage to these pastels, and it makes them great to travel with too.
