I love how you vocalise your observations… to me this is the greatest skill an accomplished artist can impart- and then in combination with manipulating your tools. Thank you- from a newbie 😊
Although I love painting the figure and portraits best, I enjoy your landscape lessons. You are a wonderful teacher, and you share your knowledge so well. Thank you!
Now I understand why I keep coming back to my cheap, square Soho pastels... I have high-end softies, but I always end up including my harder Sohos in every painting I do. There are some things they are just really good for!
This was wonderful. So helpful to see what marks you actually make. Helping me starting out with pastels. Thanks Karen. Your teaching is clear and non threatening! AND what a beautiful painting!!
Hi Karen! Thank you for sharing this amazing artwork created with the harder sticks and your wonderful experience! You have a lovely manner and teaching techniques. I hope to one day afford a set of Terry Ludwig sticks, the set you created is truly inspirational and quite flexible too! Thank you for continuing to share your painting experience and techniques with us here on RUclips. I do encourage anyone wanting to get even better instruction to look you up on Patreon! So many wonderful tutorials and painting techniques over there!
Good morning, Karen. Thank you very much for this video, it couldn't have been more perfect for me to watch right now if you had made it specifically for me. Up until now the only pastels I've ever used were pan pastels, (and lots of coloured pencil w/those). I've been watching your videos for a couple of months & really enjoying them, & so have been agonising over purchasing & trying out some soft pastel sticks. I did finally "compromise" a few days ago & ordered the full set of Nupastels, but was afraid they'd be much too limiting as they are harder. I figured I'd use those for a bit & then order a few open stock of different brands & colours of soft pastels to supplement my Nupastels. That's why I'm super excited to see you do this very beautiful painting using only Nupastels! Thank you, thank you!
Putting in the first blue into the background “… that’s too blue…” it’s so beautiful! I’m a newbie and each stroke of your pastel is so confident and beautiful-your experience and creativity shines! Thank you for sharing!
I really like the technique of skipping across small branches. If I only take away one important thing from a video, it has been very valuable. There are so many soft pastel lessons. It's nice to see you embrace the harder ones.
Love those red grasses Karen! That’s what I need to paint for my 35th wedding anniversary to my sweet husband who requested a winter landscape. Also love the tealish blue in the background! Time to break in my poly chromos.. fixing to start snapping away the sticks, as Iuse them! This painting also reminds me of our winter snows in Ga. I live in Covington. The pine trees are perfect! Thx again! Messy Mendy 🖌👍👩🏻🎨
Thanks Karen! Someday goal of owning a set of Terry Ludwigs- BUT making the most of what I have now!!! Gotta start somewhere... and I am SO grateful to have access to these pastels I do have ( found at thrift store) ❤️and an amazing teacher in you! God is SO good! 😘 BTW That was the perfect painting for the hard pastels- stark, hard lines, rigid feel- for Winter. It’s seems where I am it went from Blazing hot Summer to Winter.
Another great video. 👍 I really enjoy your genuine approach to teaching and sharing. I've got the 96 set but only ever use a handful of the colours. Great inspiration to get in and try a whole painting with them. Thanks Karen!
What a great video. I’m awaiting some single Nupastels - there’s not much choice here in the UK so have a few coming soon to try before investing in a bigger set. They are expensive here too! Anyway this video is the perfect incentive for me to get cracking with them when they arrive and I look forward to your next lessons with them. Many thanks again, Helen
Thank u for sharing ur knowledge Karen! I'm from the Philippines and I am new in pastel...The good brand of soft pastel is really expensive here. I am using Mungyo soft pastel. Thanks again.
Thank you Karen, another really informative video which I enjoyed watching. I have a 48 set of Conte hard pastels which I shall try experimenting with on their own and using Rubbing Alcohol.
Never seen a Winterscape quite so lively or Red Dogwood look so scrumptious as you've rendered them here. Not despairing as I find Snowscapes far too sombre in most cases. NuPastels are some of the industries better innovations and may be used with other media you never mention. Great piece. I'm glad I found your channel again. Take care.
Thanks for watching. I usually use them for underpaintings where most will be covered. I will usually avoid the most fugitive colors (reds) for upper layers. If lightfastness is a concern then using them for studies is a good thing to do.
I love this painting. As a beginner, your advice is very helpful to me, thank you. How did you put the snowflakes in to finish the painting? Did you use pastels, or something else?
Oh wow, I've never seen that done. Thank you Karen. Perhaps one day you could give a little demo? I'm going to have a go myself, now😊 but it would be great to know how to do it properly.
Great answer from Peg! If you are just starting out it is helpful to buy a set to get a good start on your collection and then add single sticks to fill out your collection.

Excellent . Thank you . Just received my nupastels and have NO clue how to use them 😂 I will watch this SEVERAL times ❤. Thank you Karen.?

Thank you so much!
Did not know that I could use the New pastels to paint all of a painting. Thanks so much for the lesson.
Now I understand why I keep coming back to my cheap, square Soho pastels... I have high-end softies, but I always end up including my harder Sohos in every painting I do. There are some things they are just really good for!
So true! Thanks for watching!

Karen...please post more frequently these videos 🙏
Will certainly have a go. I have a box of hard Faber-Castell Polychromos that my son found in a flat he was living in.
This was like watching magic!!!

My pleasure 😊 Thank you for watching!! Welcome to the wonderful world of pastels!!

Thank you for watching!
Wonderful video..I have hard pastels too and did not use them all.. I will try more..💙
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
Thanks Karen for another great demo. Do you worrying about the Nupastels not being light fast? Or do you just use them for studies?
Thanks for watching. I usually use them for underpaintings where most will be covered. I will usually avoid the most fugitive colors (reds) for upper layers. If lightfastness is a concern then using them for studies is a good thing to do.
I love this painting. As a beginner, your advice is very helpful to me, thank you.
How did you put the snowflakes in to finish the painting? Did you use pastels, or something else?
You are welcome 😊 I shaved pastel over the painting and pressed it into the paper with a palette knife.
Oh wow, I've never seen that done. Thank you Karen.
Perhaps one day you could give a little demo? I'm going to have a go myself, now😊 but it would be great to know how to do it properly.
How to purchase single soft pastel stick? If a finish one colour should i buy single colour or set of pastels ...which is wiset
Great answer from Peg! If you are just starting out it is helpful to buy a set to get a good start on your collection and then add single sticks to fill out your collection.
Mdm, I need offline training ...?
🤩🤗🌲🌟🔯
May I send a photo for you to do in pastels...?
Thank you for asking! I usually work from my own photos so that I can remember the moment. I appreciate you asking! Thanks for watching!
Do you ever use pastel pencils?
I don’t use them. I do use hard pastels when I need finer detail. Thanks for watching!
