Hi Denise, there are some Realtime footage here and there, I wanted to include all the footage so had to be fast in places... I see you have joined my Patreon, you will find the content slower and, in some cases, all realtime... appreciate the support... many thanks 💕🙏
Thank you so much! Over the years, I've usually just used graphite and charcoal for portraits, but recently started using color. I wasn't happy with the shadows, but didn't know what was wrong. I try to use complementary colors for my background, but never thought to use that for the shadows. I miss having an art teacher (also my best friend) for the last few years, we both have significant health issues. Being older than dirt is a challenge. I can't wait to try this, maybe I won't be so critical of my artwork. Again thank you, you've helped immensely and I enjoyed the video. You have a new follower.
Thank you so much for your kind words Patricia, thrilled you are enjoying my videos and finding them helpful. Sorry to help about you and your friends health issues... hope you find the strength to recover soon. Thanks for the follow... Wishing you blessings!! 🙏
Me encanta su dominio del lápiz pastel. Maravilloso manejo, es más difícil que la barra, evidentemente. Yo soy pastelista. Es la técnica que más disfruto. Lo descubrí hoy y me encantó. Gracias y muchas felicidades.
So glad to have found your channel, such clear and excellent instruction. I look forward to trawling through your past posts. Thank you from Down Under!
Thank you for this tutorial - I am intending to draw a portrait at my art group tomorrow morning, I am using a mid green pastel paper and a variety of pencils and hard pastels. I foound your tutrial very informative and useful.
Thank you!!!! A very informative tutorial! So relaxing to watch a professional at work. Greetings from sunny South Africa (where art supplies are so expensive - and the wish list very long😏)
Thank you Dave. That was such a valuable tutorial for me. I didn't think I would ever grasp shadows! You made it easy to follow and see where what colours were needed. I like your blending of colours, with the basics, also because the eyes were not included, it was easier to focus on the shadows, to see the facial structure, skin texture, the colouring, just so much easier to finally see the how, where and why. It looks so natural, so real, vibrant, healthy and living. I do so hope I can achieve that what you have shown. I am thouraghly enjoying the eased and relaxed atmosphere. Your expertise is greatly appreciated!Greetings, Lynda
You are welcome Lynda, Shadows are kind of magical, loads of subtle colours and energy in them. Thanks for watching and letting me know how the video made you feel... reassuring feedback for sure. Best wishes, Dave.😊🙏
Very nice and informative video. you are very skilled. I'm mainly using coloured pencils but your video has inspired me to try pastel pencils. Caran d'Ache is a great brand

Thank you Linda, I tend not to fix the pastel as it dulls the colour, I store them wrapped in glassine paper, or frame them under glass with a mount to protect the works. 🙏🙏
Dave, I like the techniques you use for the underpainting, and your explanations make it much more helpful. So the white, and the primary colors are used first, with green and yellow ochre. On the second stage, you move to more vibrant secondary/complementary colors(Caran D'Ache) in addition to the Stabilo and Conte's. It is quite a process you have here. Beyond this, you mention that drawing gradually becomes second nature like driving a car, and you learn to let your mind go and become more free flowing in the drawing... One problem I have not solved yet is what to do when the tooth of the Pastelmat is filled and now I want to change it without making mud.
Hi Brad... you summed up my technique very well. Regarding what you haven't worked out yet is I tend to dab a Faber Castell putty rubber over the area then change the colour to a grey by adding the complimentary colour and white to make mix a grey. Then any colour will go over this without creating mud. 🙏🙂
Hi Ana, thank you for supporting me on Patreon 😊The Grey pastelmat colour is somethings I tend to prefer, the flesh colour seems to stand out more on it. 🙏
Mines are white, makes me some dificult starting with white, so I'm using a kind of very light pink, so I go on until I bought some greys. Thanks for answer.
