You're a kind and intelligent man. I had a horse with navicular. I got him when he was twelve. I showed him lightly and did a lot of trail riding. A year after I got him, I had him saddled and ready to ride. While I waited for my friends to get ready, I mounted my horse and asked him to walk. I felt that he was off. My friends watched me walk him and trot him, and they thought I was nuts. But he felt off in the right front. So, I skipped the trail ride. I had the vet out the following week and she watched him trot for twenty minutes. She said he looked slightly off. She came back a few days later and did a nerve block and watched him. He was sound. She did digital radiography and found that indeed he was in the earliest stage of navicular disease in the right front. She talked with my farrier and he trimmed my horse to °53, and added a 3° wedge pad. The only thing he did different was to inject silicone between the pad and the hoof with a caulking gun. Then he wrapped duct tape around until the silicone set up. I usually waited until the next morning and neatly peeled the tape off. I use to tell my horse he had his new Nikes on. :) I didn't lunge him anymore, and I avoided hard surfaces. He was sound, so I showed him successfully and rode him on the trails. He didn't wear shoes in the winter, and he did not get contracted heel. We put rubber mats in his stall, and put the bulk of the shavings in the middle of his stall. What you said about small feet was right, and he was an AQHA. He had awesome conformation with the exception of small feet! My husband "inherited" my Appaloosa, and he had normal size feet--not a lame day in his life. I use to get a kick out of when my farrier took his shoes off, and there was a perfectly formed piece of silicone in the shape of a horse's soul and frog inverted. 🤭🤭 He died in 2019 at the age of 33. He was sound. ❤❤ Thanks for the wonderful video and the great work you do. Your video brought back a lot of good memories. Tell your clients they are blessed to have you as their farrier and that navicular isn't a death sentence when treated correctly. God bless you for what you do. 💖💖 (Northern, Illinois)
I appreciate you sharing the angles as I'm just learning. I have believed my mare needs shorter toe/higher angle and maybe because I'm an old lady the farriers dismiss my comments. I've now fired 4 and
I'm trimming her myself! The farriers have trimmed her to 51-52, one added a 2° wedge, but left the toe too long. I got her to 54° with shorter toe (and, no, she is not lame or knuckling over as I was threatened with). Hope your horse is doing well.
@@judymiller5154 My farrier retired before my horse passed from Cushing's. I went through what you did with trying to find a farrier that would do what I wanted. In my opinion, farriers that tell you that raising the heel is wrong are just plain lazy. I found a farrier, who was willing to use pads and he got my horses up to 57° in the front, and 54° in the back. He moved correctly! I showed him with 57° in the front and did quite well. The first time I showed him, I got first place in all my classes. I'm not telling you this to brag. I want you to know that some farriers are dead wrong. I still believe that they were just too much in a hurry or lazy to do what I wanted. I couldn't do it myself, because I just wasn't strong enough. I'm a female too, and I felt that some of the farriers thought I was stupid. I know what Navicular Disease is. It is an idiopathic disease that causes the Navicular Bursa (fluid sac) to break, dry up, whatever. So the Navicular bone starts to form rough edges, and the deep flexor tendon that runs down the back of the horse's leg, and right under the Navicular bone. The pain comes from that tendon rubbing on a rough Navicular bone. Contrary to popular believe, it usually happens in one front hoof. The digital radiography showed my horse's other Navicular bone as perfect. My veterinarian, who was an Equine vet only, helped me find another farrier after I called her and told her my farrier had retired and I could not find one who was willing to do the work. I don't know where you live, but I also took my horse to the Oconomowoc Equine Hospital in Wisconsin for a second opinion. They were super. I had a Dr. Doug Langer look at my horse. He was great. He agreed with the treatment plan. Don't give up. There are farriers out there like the two I found and the one in this video. That crud about "knuckling" over is a lie. There is a difference between knuckling and breaking over. You want the Navicular horse to break over faster! Then he is not slamming flat-footed on the sore hoof. Stick with it, and don't give up. Some farriers should quit being around horses and sell used cars. 🙄 IT'S NOT YOU! God bless. 👍❤❤❤

I am in rural central CA and not comfortable doing any long distance hauling, so I am committed to trimming her myself, mainly rasping as I'm not strong enough to use nippers. It's been blazing hot and her fronts are hard as rocks, so I do a bit every couple of days, knife back the bars, measure and take pictures, too. I'm learning about rehabbing the caudal hoof from PES on Facebook. She is sound now, out with a gelding on a couple hilly acres, will lope in at dinnertime (lol). @@judymiller5154 Judy, yes that would be way too far to drive when you already know what she has. I just thought if you lived in Midwest you could call them and get a farrier referral. You could, if you want, call the Idaho Horseshoeing School, and maybe they could refer you to someone in your area. Are you using a flat rasp? Because they do sell electric grinders that make it a lot easier to take off the overgrown hoof, but you have to be careful. Also, UCLA has an Equine program and they might know a good farrier in your area. I'm so glad to hear she is sound. You must be doing something right! ❤ Did you ever think of getting soaking boots? Too bad the farrier who made this video doesn't live right down the road from you. He has no problem using a wedge pad, so you have to know there are good farriers out there! Hang in there and stay stubborn! 😬 I'm glad you fired the farriers that were too stupid and lazy to do the right thing. @@cubnation You are so kind to offer so much info and encouragement ❤️ I'll check out those links. 👍 I have gotten both front hooves to 54° and plan to add DIM to the caudal areas, and 2° wedges inside her Renegade boots. Next stop is xrays on all 4 to measure palmer angles. I have mud by the water trough so she gets a good moist packing everyday and that's helping me trim. The hinds are ready to exfoliate, but the front part of both front hooves is like solid glass, the knife skims right over! I dont think I'm strong enough to safely use a grinder so I just rasp a bit every few days. I did get the number of a vet practice in southern CA that trains farriers in caudal rehab, so I'll see if they can refer me to anyone closer who has trained there. My mare's registered name IS "Annies SoSweet" and she is an amazing, lovely girl I cannot give up on. I'm 76 and I don't want another horse ... Richelle Johnson just watch any videos of antlers or horns needing to be removed. When they cut them low, they bleed. Veins will be cauterized or have clotting product put on to stop bleeding.

No, more like a pair of heel lifts. Acrylic nails on people are generally to add length for people who can’t grow strong and long nails. Long term acrylic nails will destroy the natural nails.
What your seeing here reduces the leverage on the foot, relieving pain! I have a mare with navicular disease in her front feet. It’s bloody awful to see her come in after a romp in the turnout!

For those that may be concerned about a horse being in pain when getting shoed. Think about it like trimming your nails when done properly there is absolutely no discomfort but when done wrong it hurts and you will flinch.

I used to work as a groom for a polo yard and grew up with horses - now I work as a writer, not with horses, and I find these videos so therapeutic and nostalgic to watch,; it reminds me of sitting on the yard drinking a mug of tea while the farrier shod the horses. Acrylics and horseshoes are FAR different. Acrylics are for people who just want longer nails or they cant grow strong and healthy nails.
Horseshoes are for horses that have very soar hooves so they where shoes. Horseshoes are to lift the actual hoof up and relieve some of the pressure on the hooves. And if you have the right type of horseshoe they can help the horse to not slip on ice.

My mom had horses when she was a kid, but she's never mentioned if they ever had a farrier or not. I had no clue how horseshoes were /really/ put on until watching these videos and it's really interesting! Thank you for talking about how the frog needs to have contact with the ground for good health, that's something I bet a lot of people have wondered about especially in the cleaning process. After we triumph over this pandemic and we look back to the lockdown days, watching this oddly satisfying video would be one of my fondest memories.

As someone who has had minimal interaction with horses in my life, I never realized until watching some of these videos that you don't just nail straight in when shoeing a horse. You really do learn something new every day.
It’s 4 am here in Virginia, and I’m watching horse videos without owning a horse or anything close to a horse. Also I would love a video of you just trimming/cleaning (I’m not sure what exactly it’s called) with you explaining everything, like what parts of the hooves are called, what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it.

I love your videos. There are a lot of Ferrier videos out there, but the way you talk to your audience is one in a million. I'm from Boulder, Colorado. I'm a professional dog trainer, so your handling is impressive to me and your veterinary knowledge and the way you can describe things to us in laymen's terms is fantastic. You're going to make a great vet, for sure. Haven't ever owned a horse, but love to ride them and watch them just be horses and I hadn't ever thought about how horse shoes are as important to them as human shoes are to us. Thank you for all you do and how you do it!
