Yeah about the frog being “more sensitive”, the dude in this video was completely right, it isn’t more sensitive, but I think a lot of barns and trainers stress to tell their students to not pick the frog or mistake it for mud or rocks.
That makes a lot of sense actually, i do have a question though? I heard that the frog is meant to help the horse 'feel' the ground; how would it do that without there being some sensitivity?
@@FluffyDragonDrawing I’m not a hoof expert, but talking to my farrier, I believe that it’s like an absorber for shock and overall padding for the nerves underneath it + the keratin in the hoof itself!
I was told to just be more careful there because it's softer, so when you use a pick you could put holes/ridges in there where rocks can get stuck. So I usually just used the bristly side of the pick to clean there.
I realise my comment is a bit late, but I imagine people think of the frog as something similar to the big pad on dogs and cats, which *is* sensitive. Till I started binging on horse hoof trimming I also thought that bit of the hoof was sensitive and was careful around it when I cleaned horse hooves
@@IsThatNas Good morning- Um, excuse me Nasser. I stated I thought the 🐎 might get a horse shoe. What is the problem. I was searching my comment to see where I stated I am an equestrian!🕵😷👀
I once watched a guy get killed by being kicked by a horse. I was working on a farm and the owner asked me and another guy to get a horse to the stable because it was about to storm. I go into the stable to get the bridle and he walks up to the horse and keeps trying different ways to make it walk. As I'm walking out, he gets behind the horse and slaps it on the rear. The horse kicks him in the face and snaps his neck like a twig.
@@alyssal362 ok little one i got one (two, three) for ya. Does the horse really appreciate this? Does their deminor change for the better after this? Do they know what is going on? I already assumed and I think I know the answer but there is never a bad question especially when asking a pro like you.
@@waleah4855 I'm not that person you were asking but I'm not sure if they answered it. I think horses do appreciate it because if something is hurting them hopefully the farrier can help if it is hoof related. Also horses hooves are like our fingernails and toenails. They need to get trimmed every one in a while and sometimes things can happen to them and they need to get fixed. For example a hangnail. Or an ingrown toenail. Idk. Those are the things I think of. I hope this made sense. It is a little difficult to write out.
It’s AWESOME how you do this! People are always thinking animals are just toys, and once they aren’t fun or get to old to do what they want it to, the neglect it. Animals deserve respect in care! In fact, most animals have kinder hearts than the humans I know! Keep up the good work, taking care of these horses
This is so interesting! I found this in my recommended right before falling asleep. It's totally unrelated, but I'm an ornithologist & owl enthusiast and I couldn't help but keep noticing how the hooves kind of look like barn owl faces when they're trimmed, it's super cool!!
@Zayna Smiles I couldn't imagine how. Owls faces are disk-like in order to direct sound into their ears better as I understand it, I don't think they are trying to mimic a horse's hoof to hide. Just an interesting coincidence.
This isn’t my usual thing, but it was nice to hear you talk about how to help this horse with their leg, and letting them lean on you when they’re hurting. Thank you for being so compassionate. I’m sure in their own way, that horse really appreciated it.
Regarding the myth that frogs are sensitive- when I first started riding (about 30 years ago) and was being taught how to care for a horse prior to tacking up, I was told, repeatedly and loudly, "NEVER TOUCH THE FROG! IT'S SO SENSITIVE THAT IF YOU TOUCH IT YOU WILL MAKE YOUR HORSE LAME!!!" I'm not joking or exaggerating. I was screamed at and barred from riding that day when cleaning a horse's hoof and the pick grazed the frog. The whole thing didn't make sense to me so I researched it (which involved going to a LIBRARY and reading BOOKS) talked to a farrier and got the correct information. So, I think the myth keeps getting handed down, so to speak, when misinformed kids grow up and become misinformed trainers. No one questions it or thinks "I'll talk to the farrier about it".
We used to be told the same as kids at pony club... only problem was from about the age of 5 I used to go to work with my dad as a farrier, so I knew it was rubbish.
Its great to see a ferior that loves his job. I'm from wi and we had a horse and the ferior always acted like his job was such a pain. Thank you for caring about your job and these beautiful creatures.
My dad was a farrier for most of my life. He stopped when he was in his early 60s, about 10 years ago. Seeing this brought me back to being a kid, sitting on the bed of his work truck whilst he trimmed or shoed a clients horse. Thanks for bringing me back in time for a bit.
When my Grandfather passed away I got his tools. I was his little shadow, always wanting to help fix things. Anyway, as I went through his tools I noticed how many were for horse/cattle foot work. I asked my family but they had no idea why he had those set ups. Everytime I see those tools though, I know. Pap was a man of many talents. Maybe one day I'll follow, once again, in his footsteps and bring those tools back to life. Until then, I'll just look at them and remember the greatest man I've ever known, and think about the things he forgot to tell me about. I'm Steph, From Pennsylvania. My Grandfather was George, a man of many talents, and the person of whom I try to follow the footsteps of. Thank You for this video, it's awesome seeing those tools at work.
I didn’t escape the gene pool. My grandfather was a mechanic. Never knew him but my mom says I’m just like him. I remember seeing his basement with lots of tools hanging. I just retired after 35 years as a auto mechanic but I can fix darn near anything and this was before the Internet. I play with bicycles now and fix stuff for neighbors, answer questions for them to help them understand. I just love solving problems especially mechanical.
@@davel2119 I wish I was your neighbor ! My Dad was like you - he could build a space shuttle from spare junk. I inherited NONE of that mechanical ability.

That's why you are taking classes before starting to do this.. You are taught how the hoof is built up, and then with experience, and knowledge, you get a feeling.
As an instrument rated pilot, the FAA required us to become working familiar with all systems on board and how they interacted with one another. So too is riding a horse. Keep up your cogent explanations.
If anyone wondering how horses trim their nails I'll explain.Wild horses trim their nails by moving many kilometers.A domesticated horses is unable to wear their hooves down as nature intended. Probably because they don't have much space to run and wear their hooves down
Also because usually people keep their horses in fields with soft grass, let them graze. Any horse owner worth their salt will give their horse enough room, but they don't keep them on rough unforgiving terrain. Wild horses walk over a lot of rocks and stuff. Also they break their legs and die of diseases all the time, but domesticated horses have owners who take care of them.
Howdy from Australia. Im another know nothing about horses person. Never realised horses got arthritis. Glad there's people who know how to handle em. Thanks for your care.
You are like an artist. Much love and detail goes into your work. I also like the fact of how you explain the different issues you may encounter. Love from Kentucky!
I think for me the misconception that the frog is sensitive came from being taught not to pick it. A lot of people who are new to horses think it's a patch of packed dirt at first
its sorta like cutting your nails so it doesnt hurt that much, there is flesh inside the hoof though (please correct me if im wrong im trying to learn more about horses)

Thanks for your dedication, care & compassion for all the horses you look after . It quite clearly shows in how you work with them . Greetings to all from Derbyshire, England .
Not only, but yes, it is a big toe-nail. There is still flesh inside, and if the blacksmith goes too far, he can badly hurt the horse, like you when you trim your toe-nail too short.

YAAAAAAS!! Put tight shoes on when your toenails are really long. Then trim them and do it again. That’s the level of comfort and satisfaction they get

Such a caring & gentle Farrier. I loved watching him trim this horse’s hooves.
It’s AWESOME how you do this! People are always thinking animals are just toys, and once they aren’t fun or get to old to do what they want it to, the neglect it. Animals deserve respect in care! Oh shit they do!
@Zayna Smiles I couldn't imagine how. Owls faces are disk-like in order to direct sound into their ears better as I understand it, I don't think they are trying to mimic a horse's hoof to hide. Just an interesting coincidence.

Good on You..Wish more people would do that..
Ok boomer

If anyone wondering how horses trim their nails I'll explain.Wild horses trim their nails by moving many kilometers.A domesticated horses is unable to wear their hooves down as nature intended. Probably because they don't have much space to run and wear their hooves down
Thanks, was asking myself that question
Also because usually people keep their horses in fields with soft grass, let them graze. Any horse owner worth their salt will give their horse enough room, but they don't keep them on rough unforgiving terrain.
Wild horses walk over a lot of rocks and stuff. Also they break their legs and die of diseases all the time, but domesticated horses have owners who take care of them.

Not really worth explaining. Kind of a no brainer.
