My dad does this for a living, one weird thing I always tell people is that dogs absolutely love chewing on the clippings, I suppose it’s like chewing on a slightly softer bone
I find that so strange but yeah, they love horse clippings. Weird “snack” :)
That's so true. After cutting my dog's nails he eats them from the floor bruh
Used to feed em to the dogs all the time
The dogs at a farm where I work like to eat what I scrape out of the hooves lol. And then they go to lick my face while I'm still trying to pick
That makes sense since hooves are just basically toenails, so its not too strange for dogs to want to chew on them
Yeah about the frog being “more sensitive”, the dude in this video was completely right, it isn’t more sensitive, but I think a lot of barns and trainers stress to tell their students to not pick the frog or mistake it for mud or rocks.
That makes a lot of sense actually, i do have a question though? I heard that the frog is meant to help the horse 'feel' the ground; how would it do that without there being some sensitivity?
@@FluffyDragonDrawing I’m not a hoof expert, but talking to my farrier, I believe that it’s like an absorber for shock and overall padding for the nerves underneath it + the keratin in the hoof itself!
I was told to just be more careful there because it's softer, so when you use a pick you could put holes/ridges in there where rocks can get stuck. So I usually just used the bristly side of the pick to clean there.
I realise my comment is a bit late, but I imagine people think of the frog as something similar to the big pad on dogs and cats, which *is* sensitive. Till I started binging on horse hoof trimming I also thought that bit of the hoof was sensitive and was careful around it when I cleaned horse hooves

As a horse person I can fully agree
this is completely irrelevant but im just curious, like could the horse not kick you while ur doing this?
@@sharkyhits1603 they can, and some do, but mostly they just try to put their foot down.
@@sharkyhits1603 they could if they wanted to but it takes a lot for them to want to kick. owners make sure the horses are handled appropriately so they can be good for the farrier and they are trimmed every 6-8 weeks normally so it becomes a routine for the horse. just like you slowly expose a dog to getting their nails trimmed or going to the groomer, you would do the same for a horse needing their feet done
And here I thought clipping my restless dog's nails was hard
It is
This is so interesting! I found this in my recommended right before falling asleep. It's totally unrelated, but I'm an ornithologist & owl enthusiast and I couldn't help but keep noticing how the hooves kind of look like barn owl faces when they're trimmed, it's super cool!!
Oh shit they do!
@Zayna Smiles I couldn't imagine how. Owls faces are disk-like in order to direct sound into their ears better as I understand it, I don't think they are trying to mimic a horse's hoof to hide. Just an interesting coincidence.
😂😂🤣 now I can't unsee it! Very cool indeed!
I can never unsee that now 😂
The fact that you put yourself in such an uncomfortable position just so the horse doesn't have to lift its leg as high is so sweet. You sir, are a kind soul.
He should really get a little stool or something
I think he did that more because it's better for trimming that way
This is pretty standard in how to clean yoyr horses hooves. Its easiest for the horse. If you clean your horses hooves regularly then you get pretty used to it.
The fact that any horse trimming person has been doing this like this since ancient Mesopotamia and you don’t know it’s mind boggling. You sir, are a dumb soul.

I think for me the misconception that the frog is sensitive came from being taught not to pick it. A lot of people who are new to horses think it's a patch of packed dirt at first
When you are at the vet check and see if they can fuse your spine while they are at it. I can't think of job that is harder on the back than being a farrier. I trim up my horses hooves and I can only work for 20 minutes at a time. My full time ferrier just retired and his back is trashed.
Having 2 back surgeries myself this is so painful to watch!!😖
Isn't there an easier way? Like a soft lock on the hoof, that will break loose so it doesn't get hurt if it flips out, so you can sit down and do it?
Fun fact: You didn’t search for this, this was recommended. I’ll see you all in 15 years when this gets recommended again.

The most interesting thing about this channel is that Sheldon add’s context and teaches about the situation compared to the other horse shoe videos which are just ASMR

Thanks, was asking myself that question
Also because usually people keep their horses in fields with soft grass, let them graze. Any horse owner worth their salt will give their horse enough room, but they don't keep them on rough unforgiving terrain.
Wild horses walk over a lot of rocks and stuff. Also they break their legs and die of diseases all the time, but domesticated horses have owners who take care of them.

Regarding the myth that frogs are sensitive- when I first started riding (about 30 years ago) and was being taught how to care for a horse prior to tacking up, I was told, repeatedly and loudly, "NEVER TOUCH THE FROG! IT'S SO SENSITIVE THAT IF YOU TOUCH IT YOU WILL MAKE YOUR HORSE LAME!!!" I'm not joking or exaggerating. I was screamed at and barred from riding that day when cleaning a horse's hoof and the pick grazed the frog. The whole thing didn't make sense to me so I researched it (which involved going to a LIBRARY and reading BOOKS) talked to a farrier and got the correct information. So, I think the myth keeps getting handed down, so to speak, when misinformed kids grow up and become misinformed trainers. No one questions it or thinks "I'll talk to the farrier about it".
Good on You..Wish more people would do that..
Ok boomer
