Unfortunately, we lost Daryl in 2016...His voice is amazing...His range is ridiculous...One of the greatest Gospel singers of the day!...Although he is gone physically, he remains with us musically...Rest in Power Daryl...
Daryl Coley is...HANDS DOWN...one of Gospel Music's Royalty class singers. His range and control are phenomenal. He was trained, but the majority of his experience came out of the AA church environment. Many of the things shared here, are things that were taught to other choir members by STRICT and Disciplined choir directors such as Mattie Moss Clark, Donald Lawrence, Richard Smallwood and Ricky Dillard. They would give us a phrase and have us mimic that one phrase for hours until it was perfect. So many singers learned because we were pushed into doing it and thereby learning our own voices in the process.
Lasage, it's called the anointing. When you hear voices that can hardly be duplicated, only God could have given it to them. That's why when he gives a person a voice and beautiful songs, they should be used to glorify Him.
He was my favorite singer as a kid & no one believed me when i saw the episode & reported it, since The Simpsons were "the devil." lol. I had to record the rerun for proof. lol.
You made me cry laugh and Daryl had me shouting. This is just what we do on Sundays from 7 to 3. It’s why Black Church takes so long. They were being nice for the program so it was succinct but in real life, it would’ve taken 2 hours to sing this one song on Easter Sunday! Ahhhh…can I get a Amen, somebody? 😂
Gotta sing ALL the verses followed by the chorus, then a five minute instrumental break for the organist and drummer, then back to the whole song again.
Black gospel is the most challenging musical type to sing with tons of intricate runs and riffs while they have to hold the deep and long breath when belting.
Daryl’s voice is purely instrumental and it will cause you to lose yourself. You’re gonna go crazy trying to explain his gift. Coley got you pulling out your full educational capacities. Rest in power Mr. Instrument Daryl Coley
This was a joy to listen to! Had me near tears. From childhood, I had always been amazed at Daryl Coley’s voice. I always said he was a living instrument. Thank you for paying homage to him, especially as a fellow opera singer. It was great to hear a technical breakdown. This was nothing but the anointing of the Holy Spirit. That’s why it can’t be replicated…some things can only come from God 🙏🏽🤍
This is one of my favorites of many gospel songs he sings. He was truly anointed! You NEED to go listen to him singing ‘Even Me’. The man went BEAST MODE when he sang. He is my #1 favorite singer/artist ever.
I have been listening to Daryl Coley for my entire life, he is one of the people that taught me how to do certain vocal acrobats. He is truly a legend and a true G.O.A.T and trust me when I say he has been astounding thousands with his voice for a long time. I have found myself on many of an occasion saying "No way he is real" lol
He’s looking at the difference between a choral conductor and a choir DIRECTOR (I do both). Directors teach and…direct lol the enunciations and emotions. The Ds happen at the same time because they’re following, and trained to follow “the baton”-which can be a hand, a shoulder, or a look. Plus, choral singers have a book setting their expectations: “this note is an eighth note, it says it right here on the paper!” While a choir director lets them know, “we gon’ hold this note a little and cut it when I do the scissor move…”
Frfr,NO OTHER SINGER OF ANY GENRE OF MUSIC had the voice control, range and could do riffs/runs subconsciously the way Daryl Coley could. My all time favorite singer!
To me it looks like when he goes minor at 12:06 it was unintentional and he recovered like an absolute genius! Even Donald turned around like "yo stop it" lol
Darryl Coley singing Sovereign is also phenomenal. Well, singing anything really! Loved watching your reactions to the gospel experience with Mr. Coley.
I'm glad folks like these. There is a patron who keeps asking for specific gospel performances and the response to these reactions are really fantastic. The numbers tend to be low, but the enthusiasm is sky high. Also, these performances are incredible.
Makes your head explode, don't it?🤯🤯🤯 This is SOUL. This is HOLY SPIRIT ANOINTING. This is years of a young man spending years playing and experimenting with his voice, learning and discovering what his instrument could do. And doing it in front of a Black church congregation - which is one of the most judgmental places to play and perform. And our approval or disapproval is immediate - you're going to know if we like what you're doing or not. Same goes with the choir. Donald Lawrence, like most choir directors in the Black church, spent weeks, months and years perfecting the blend of those singers - most of whom probably never had classical training, played an instrument, or read a single note of music. This training came from the Black church, with singers sitting under disciplined choir directors (some of whom were classically trained!) like Thomas Dorsey, Rev. James Cleveland, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, Andrae Crouch, Walter & Edwin Hawkins, Rev. John P. Kee, Min. Thomas Whitfield, Richard Smallwood, Quincy Fielding Jr., Min. Keith Hunter, Joe Pace, O'Landa Draper, Hezekiah Walker, James Hall, Min. Lonnie Hunter, Patrick Lundy, Kirk Franklin and THEE Maestro himself, Ricky Dillard. Most of us who sing Gospel music have no idea what we're doing. It's God's gifting and ability. It's ANOINTING. It's SOUL. It's BLACK CHURCH.
May Mr. Coley Journey in peace. I know only one other vocalist who is comparable to him. Nobody knows who he is right now but all will know Kevin Henderson.
Mannnnn why didn't you finish? I was waiting to get your full reaction. You must do a part 2 to finish. The song, the performance, and Daryl Coley is ICONIC. He was a phenomenal artist. RIP.
my live stream of this got struck by RUclips so I had to stop. I did listen to the rest of it after the live stopped. I was just so rattled that I didn't record it.
I played percussion for him back in the early 90's live. It was for his first solo album I think. Nicest guy in the world. .... On another note, I couldn't hear a word of the commentator's remarks at all. Unfortunately.
The GREATEST and my FAVORITE Male Gospel vocalist. I had the opportunity to sing with him many years ago. I still have our rehearsal tape which I will treasure forever. There will NEVER be another Daryl.
I love your critique of my favorite singer of all time! He was classically trained as well as an accomplished jazz pianist. He could also preach you into a frenzy. I was blessed to meet him in person several times and watched him do things that were just magical. His musicality was and is unmatched. The only person in my opinion who comes close is Tonex/ B Slade. Now that is just my opinion
You can analyze it all you want when it comes to the gospel music you either have it or you don’t it’s something comes from God. Analyze it it will not make you sound like that at all. Good luck.
Unfortunately, we lost Daryl in 2016...His voice is amazing...His range is ridiculous...One of the greatest Gospel singers of the day!...Although he is gone physically, he remains with us musically...Rest in Power Daryl...
His singing is masterful. It's a shame he is no longer with us. It's a blessing that his music is so full of life.
@LesageSinging, here is a vid of Daryl singing in the arms of Jesus live where he uses his range...ruclips.net/video/pVv5mIBNiQE/видео.html

Big Big Facts Sir!
What you hear is normal for most African American choirs that perfect their craft of singing in churches on Sunday mornings.
Yes! This is so true.
Lasage, it's called the anointing. When you hear voices that can hardly be duplicated, only God could have given it to them. That's why when he gives a person a voice and beautiful songs, they should be used to glorify Him.
Love me some Daryl Coley Rip my favorite Gospel Singer of all times boy are you missed tremendously!
Fun fact: Daryl Coley voiced Bleeding Gums Murphy on the Simpsons.

Really appreciate your technical expertise and description of the singing, very insightful!

If you like the piano, you should check out the piano player, Kevin Bond. He is the producer of that album and many amazing, classic Gospel albums.
