Once again you've impressed me beyond measure. You understand something most don't: the theory/graphics showing what is required to achieve a particular sound but you also understand that when God made Patti La Belle the blueprint was destroyed. So it is with the greatest of them all. Thank you good sir for being so knowledgeable, articulate & respectful.
Me, too. And this is not even Patti's best version of this song. There are other versions where she sang it much better in my opinion. So I hope he reviews those.
This is the best analysis of a singer’s voice ever! He gets a 💯A++++++++++! Like you, I have been looking all over for this and I came upon it today and he made my day!!!! Brilliantly done!
I truly appreciate this reaction video. Not only because it's Patti LaBelle but because someone whom technically understands the vocal excellence that is Patti LaBelle. Honestly she has so many performances over the years that are mind blowing. A lot of people reference the same ones a lot. But there are some golden gems out there which need to be discussed. Medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/When you've been blessed from Arsenio Hall. Sentimental Child from an honoring Broadway classic. (This one alone is beyond insane) Love and Learn from the late 70s. Unreal!
I would argue that her upbringing in church was an education of incredible quality. I am not sure how Beulah Baptist Church was when she was growing up, but I imagine its not so far away from how excellent it is now.
My favourite version of Ms Patti singing this song! There’s a couple of other Soultrain ones that do compare. When she sings she lets the spirit take her, and us to that other place! To hear your technical analysis of her voice really shows her brilliance, “courage, strength and charisma” in a way I’ve not seen before. I knew she has incredible skill as a singer, I just didn’t know the correct names for them. I just loved your reaction and I was feeling you at every pause. Please watch and review Forever Young from Live Aid, I Can’t Complain from Arsenio Hall Show and Since I Don’t Have You from ‘77-‘78 concert, there’s so many more! Thank you 🙏🏽
Actually, years of belting and age has taken it's toll on her vocals. And as a long time fan, you can always speak truth, because she isn't as good as she use to be, but let us not forget how EXCELLENT She was. And I give her every props I can that she set the standard when it comes to belting out a song from start to finish. I don't hold any animosity for her not being able to do what she did then, as opposed to what she does now. She is one of the greatest up there with Whitney, Aretha, Gladys, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Phyllis Hyman, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson.
you seem uneducated. it’s practical knowledge to know that EVERYONES voice changes over the course of your life. patti is 79 and STILL on tour. please have a seat ❤
True! I saw her last December. Brought my dad, who saw her many times solo & with Labelle way back when. She was in EXCELLENT voice & he was blown away by how great she sounded at almost 80 yrs old. We had a BALL.
She performed this song at Essence. She literally walked to the other end of the stage without the microphone and we could still hear her in the nosebleed section. Not a dry eye in the house - amazing
I want to thank you so much. It is so wonderful to see someone of your expertise and knowledge validate what a magnificent and talented singer Patti Labelle is. She is a master of her craft and yet naysayers say she is just "screaming" and over singing. Your comments have made me understand why I have just loved her singing instinctually. Thank you
Your description of “it’s like listening to an amazing trumpet player” just goes to show your clear and deep understanding of not only vocals and techniques, but music in general. You’re awesome. As soon as you said that, a video I’ve seen probably over 30 times seemed new and better.
You couldn’t close your mouth. This is what Ms Patty does, babe. Yes, what a vocal experience for us all. All that from the black church. Sanging. Thanks for being open.
Patti is also literally the only singer who I can think of who got better decade after decade. I'd say her vocals continued to improve into her 50s probably and didn't start vocal decline until her late 60s
You thought it was gonna end right there? Nah, Auntie Patti was just announcing she was about to burn that sh!t down. She is the queen of taking it home.
Patti LaBelle I Can't Complain (with bonus of Somewhere Over the Rainbow) on the Arsenio Hall Show the 6:20 min version. This night I tell you! No one ever talks about this video BUT this here folks is the one to match. I've never in my life heard another singer attempt to sing two songs back to back with that much intensity, power and vocal presence. If anyone gets some time to watch or react. This is one to truly watch. 🙏🏾
I would love to hear your review of Lisa Fischer’s live performance in Japan for her song “How can I ease the pain” she kills it and seems like she has great control and so many different levels of her singing voice. Just an awesome performance that I think you would enjoy analyzing. I hope you get a chance to review it.
I think the only people who consistently deliver this kind of conviction are gospel singers. what I love about Patty is the immense energy she puts into a performance. If it weren't so exact, it'd almost be manic. it's mind blowing to be able to "go there" and still have some of the best technique in the world.

I real liked your vocal analysis of Patti. Her voice is one of a kind. Her head voice got higher as she got older in her 50's. Patti use to eat F6's for breakfast.
You know what? The entire premise of my following you was about a month ago of you reacting to Patti LaBelle singing this song at the White House at 70. Such a nuance performance I had never seen anyone react to despite knowing how gold it was and I’m so proud of you for finally covering this ULTIMATE, prime Patti version. Salute!
You should react to her singing "You are my friend" @essence festival in her white pantsuit....she gave her all and some of the best musicians to ever accompany her!
She plays her vocal tract as if it were an instrument. Incredible. Anyone that is familiar with her inherently knows how talented she is, but thank you for allowing me to appreciate her in a more technical context.
Patti approaches belting from an almost operatic perspective. I heard she had training, though probably not extensive. Her technique is brilliant even though it is probably haphazard. Her influences are mostly jaz singers like Gloria Lynn, Diana Washington, Nancy Wilson, James Moody. She came up singing pop standards, then rock, then RnB. I think her technique is mostly intuitive. Excellent comments and analysis! Growing up in a family of musicians and singers - I can vouch for the "training ground" of the Black gospel choir! It taught one to develop an "ear," regardless of knowing how to read music (notes, keys)... and also helped to develop voice dynamics (for when microphones were not available/affordable, etc). Patti is a one-of-a-kind artist, vocalist, and performer!
Patti is unbelievable! Fun fact: Patti Labelle is Mariah Carey's godmother and she was the one that announced and gave Mariah the award for Artist of the Millennium. Talent rewarding talent!

She doesn't think before she does, she's not trained or rehearsed to do something a certain way. There are literally no two Patti performances alike. U could show this video to Patti herself and she would have ZERO idea of what you're talking about.
Patti Labelle is probably one of the best live singers ever......during her prime, there were few, if any, people who wanted to go on stage with her.
