    How strange to think some plants will possibly only be saved through the houseplant community. I love this one!

      So we're basically conservation specialists? Thanks for that idea, I know what I'm telling my husband the next time a haul turns up😁 I'm doing environmental conservation work for mamma earth & will thank him for financing our bit for the planet🌱 In around 3-6 hours according to the Fed ex tracking number 😆

      Humans. Masters of hypocrisy. No, you aren't saving anything. You are participating actively to the distruction of their habitats, especially if you are a meat consumer, as Bresil is known for cutting forests for soy plantation as fodder plant.
      So let's not make confusion between simply owning interior plants and saving nature. It's far from that.

    While conservation through cultivation is an okay idea at face value, I think we should be reticent in promoting this idea too heavily as it may detract from protecting habitat loss. Ultimately, if there's no habitat left for these plants we're cultivating to return to then what's the point if they can't go back into nature anymore? I just bring this up as a means for discussion because I know from your videos and from reading your book that you understand this point far more than most people (myself included), Summer. It's frustrating because it seems like more and more habitat for these plants is eliminated at alarming rates each year.

    Will you pleeease continue this series untill you have one on all the species you have?
    I know it was meant to be a one year project. But it is just soo cool to have a full index on all your plants, and well explained caretips on a lot of unusual/uncommon houseplants.

    I have 3 of the Silver Sword in a pot, growing on a PVC pipe covered in Jute rope. I also added a connector on the top part of the PVC pipe before I added the Jute rope, that way I can add more pipes as it grows without having to undo its had work once the pole gets to short. Now they are only juvenile plants, and they are "only" sold as single plants in pots here in Australia. I have only had them for about 2 months, but so far I have had about 5-6 new leaves on each plants so I must be doing something right. They look really nice and lush, and I hope to propagate some more once they get a bit larger to fill out the pot even more. I just can't wait to see it really big and lush and rainforest like, it gets gentle morning sun and bright light during the day but no direct sunlight after about 10 am as the sunlight is extremely strong and hot here in Australia.
    I love your videos, and I have learned so much from yourself and I have asked for your book as a birthday gift from my husband.

    This is probably the easiest plant in my collection. I have it on my windowsill (NW facing window) above a heater. I spray it 1-2 a day and it's super happy. Even during the winter with -10 degrees C outside and the heater being on the growth is amazing. During the last month, it started growing 4 new leaves and what appears to be a flower. The flower bud was green at first but it turned brown now so i don't think the flower will make it.

    Hey Summer Rayne, a lot of people seem to talk about 2 forms of philodendron hastatum, and today I have spent the evening looking - I cant find a second form, or evidence of 2 forms.
    I think the narrow leaf you have is just a semi-adult.
    Its now 3 years on since you posted this video, have you come to any new conclusions? It would be nice to know.
    There is however a philodendron subhastatum - but it is very different from hastatum.
    It would be nice to hear more from you on this subject.

    Mine has a big problem
    New leaves are getting damaged and deformed because they get caught in the sheath of the previous leaf and continue growing out, curling in and snapping themselves. I sometimes can manually spread the sheath and release the new leaf but it doesn't always save it from deforming. I checked the other Hastatums at the store and they were also having the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any explanation/solutions?

    • @matthewmeabon5257
      @matthewmeabon5257 4 года назад +1

      This (in my experience) is due to a lack of humidity. If the air is too dry, the new leaves tend to "stick". I had a prince of orange doing the same thing and once I moved it into the room in which I've got my humidifier, the issue resolved itself. Hope this helps.

    In most places it illegal to own an endangered animal, why and how are plants different?
    To me it's very strange that its native habitat is being destroyed and it's endanngered and on the verge of Extinction but it's a common house plant here?
    This just seems incredibly at odds with itself....

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 лет назад +11

      There are definitely restrictions of taking any endangered species from the wild, including plants. You would at the very least need a CITES permit. However, when it's already in cultivation, it's less of an issue. Keep in mind that many people propagate plants through asexual means, like stem cuttings, so this doesn't create a genetically diverse stock, so even having it in cultivation isn't always a solution. But being aware of its status in the wild, I hope, can bring us closer to 1.) caring about the issues that the world face, and maybe even 2.) getting more deeply engaged in proactive solutions for conservation of our world's beautiful wonders.

      @@summerrayneoakes Thanks for a great explanation! I guess I'm used to looking at this from an animal conservation point of view and never even thought about this type of situation applied to plants. I also do my best to make my gardening local/native to where I am, so I think I'm approaching this from very different point of view. Even my "houseplants" are all native species to my area. And I'm working hard to get my land declared a wildlife Conservation Area for native plants.
      Your channel is very interesting to me, not only for the information it provides because it is thought provoking and challenges my point of view. So I hope you don't mind when I offer a different point of view or constructive criticism.
