My VS2480HD operating system version is 2.504. I have additional information to help the VS2480HD users. I want to say that the IDE to SATA adapter that you show in your video (JP103-5) works excellent in my VS2480HD. I also wanted to tell you that there is another adapter with a different set of numbers (RXD-629A7-7) that works in the VS2480HD also (it is the exact same circuit board as the JP103-5, but with a different set of numbers printed). I use the Samsung 860 "Pro" 2.5 inch Solid State Drive (256GB) in my VS2480HD and it works great. You can also use the Samsung 860 "Evo" 2.5 inch SSD. I tested several drives and found that both the Samsung 860 "Pro" and "Evo" models worked. About the drive caddy: The VS2480HD caddy has screw holes where the original 3.5 inch drive was mounted. If you place one screw (SSD drive screw) into the screw hole in the upper right hand corner of the caddy (that was used to mount the original 3.5 HDD) , you can mount the 2.5 inch SSD into the caddy using one screw and it will hold the SSD in place. I want to thank you for the great videos and excellent information regarding the IDE to SATA adapter for the VS2480. You have been a major help to me !!!! Thank you !!!! I set the "Physical Format" and "Surface Scan" to OFF.
I bought a Samsung PRO 860 256 gb and it didn't work. I used the adaptor JP103-5. Physical format and surface format OFF. Then I saw in another video that Ian used the phsysical format ON. I tried it and it didn't work out either (it took really long). So now I have no clue. What can I do? Should I try with sn Kingstone 120 gb?.
@@red_apple It seems to me there is a problem converting IDE to SSD with the vs 2480DVD model. I'm beginning to see a pattern related to this issue. As much as I could find, only vs2480HD owners did the conversion with success.
@@JMK65 Interesting. I have a 2480CD converted to DVD. Any news on this issue? I'd really love to convert to SSD, my HD is just too noisy. There is also the scsi2sd option...but it's not great. Thanks
Thank you thank you! Just finished doing this…TOTALLY works! Once you get it in…it takes hours for it to format…then i turned it off then back on…and it came to life… very happy!
Ian, Great video and information. I installed the JP103-5 adapter into my VS2480HD and it works excellent. Thank you. My VS2480HD operating system is version "2.504".
I just want to encourage you brother. Your videos are better than a lot of others similar videos. It's time for you to take it to the next level though. By improving your presentation. By adding a jingle and a distinct video intro to all your videos that will set your brand apart from others. Keep up the good work. I see greatness in you.👍
Do you know if this will work on just a normal vs2480? We don't have the HD one or the CD one, just the plain old vs2480. Because we did get this adapter and it was unable to see any drive at all if the jumper is set to master. On slave is just gets stuck. Any help would be really appreciated
hello good morning, my hd is having problems formatting, do you have the VS operating system for me to save and format again and how much does it cost?, thanks Ryldo
Just done this conversion on my VS2480HD, it seemed to go okay but the 2480 will randomly freeze when writing to the hard drive and it can only be recovered by powering off. Board jumper set to MASTER and everything looks good with the install - the 2480 "sees" the hard disk and formatted it. Stuck!
In Fall 2020, that --particular-- adapter board is very hard to find and can only be purchased on EBay via China. At least one other adapter board (I have found) works.
Hi Ian, have you ever had any problems or know problems on vs 2480 (This problem sounds like it is something within the circuitry, but it is affecting ALL of the paths internally. Adding effects channels doubles the crackling / popping sounds. ) This problem would be related to electrolytic capacitors on power supply or mother board? thanks.
Hello. If i want to get my info, songs, off of the hard drive,do i have to put the drive back into the 2480? Or is there another way? ........wats happening? The 2480 turns on,pulls up an empty project. I go to project list to try to pull up other songs,it asks me if i want to store current, i hit yes,it says ok and acts like its pulling up the song i asked it to,it stays there for hours and hours and hours. How do i get my info, songs, off of the hard drive?
I did this mod using the exact same SSD and JP-103-5 conversion board. I did not have success when using a VS2480HD model mainboard (does not have the CDR connector on the mainboard) that was running OS version 2.5.05. It would not recognize the drive on the VS2480. So, I bought an different VS480 mainboard that was the CDR version (has the connector for the CDR) and is running OS version 2.5.03. This one worked for me, and it also worked using a newer (2018) Samsung Evo 256gb SSD drive. I am not sure if the issue was the VS2480HD mainboard or the newer OS version 2.5.05. Have any others had similar issues performing this mod using the VS2480HD mainboard or the OS version 2.5.05?
When you load this and partition,do you need to re install any original info onto the ssd from a disk just that I don’t have that.i remember doing this to my old vs880ex with a cf and it just fired right up
The performance of the adapters depends on your particular 2480 station (chipset). Different adapters work or do not work with different HDDs on different versions of the 2480 station. I tested adapters of different models and some of them worked or did not work with different models of hard drives. I realized that you need to select drives for each adapter empirically for each 2480 station. Apparently, the adapter-hard drive controller bundle is crucial for the 2480 to work in this hardware configuration. The most important question. Why do you need to use this adapter? If to increase productivity, then I will disappoint you - the system performance will not increase in any way! I use this configuration only to realize the ability to export tracks to a computer through the program for exporting tracks from virdis. I installed a removable SATA hard drive in my station. The file system of the 2480 - FAT32 station allows you to read 2480 recording data on a computer. Using the program for exporting tracks from virdis, you can quickly transfer tracks to a computer and edit them there and then import them back to the station. It is convenient and fast.
VIRDIS needs a PC . Pro tools is on my laptop; no PC. That is typical these days. You need to convert a 2480 to a solid state drive because the 2480 OFTEN had hard drive failures and glitches and *erased* projects. That is why I mothballed my 2480 for ten years (!), until solid state drives made it practical again. Now I no longer waste time on pro tools for the actual mixing.
Great info. My vs2480 still in pristine condition. I have bought the correct adaptor and Samung SSD. I have 2 vs8f boards and TC, Massenberg EQ, Universal Audio, 3rd party plug ins. Is there any issue when reloading these back onto the new hard drive via an external CD drive?
I have the VS2480HD with the hard drive tray at the front right, does anyone have a link to the adapter card that worked for them please? I cannot find any.
I've tried this on my Roland VS2480 and it didn't work. I have two of the JP103-5 PATA to SATA 3.0 converter, and it hasn't worked. It started to work with one SSD, but then hung. It sat there for well over 9 hours. I hope I can figure this out...otherwise I'm going back to HDD
Is your VS2480 mainboard an HD model? (ie. no CDR drive)? If so, that is probably the issue. My tests indicate you need the VS2480CD model mainboard to get this to work.

@@red_apple Well, now the possible pattern makes no sense. I've been thinking if it has something to do with the board (which seems to be a SCSI/IDE adapter) where the cables connect - the ones from mother board and the ones to the hard drive and, in some cases, the cd/dvd. Also wondering that this possible difference interferes in some way with different ssd drives or some kind of different firmware.
