I do not disagree. Just pointing out: Writing and producing a readable book is a lot harder than many people think it is. I believe RY has been done dirty by the publisher. A book per year (plus her military romance stuff)? Even if she writes fulltime that's not enough time to smooth out a first draft. Since she is new in writing fantasy (romance) RY would need in my estimation at least 2 rounds of editing/rewriting more than Onyx Storm has now. It's a shame becaus it could be really good.
@mercycunningham2813 it does get complicated if you take an empathetic approach. But I'm not rich enough to purchase things or give second chances out of pity. As far as I'm concerned "no one remembers second-place, don't mess with my money". The focus of pushing seemingly marketable writers to write more cash cows is the fault of the industry, because I don't fault writers for getting their bag. Consumers should demonstrate a desire for quality over quantity (tho I doubt agencies care) because notoriety is currently driving sales. I can go a lot deeper but this is my shallow but honest response
Those people, who ask that kind of question in hope of shutting down criticism, actually couldn't even have any better counter-points. It almost sounds like they can't even think for themselves when engage with a piece of literature

The whole “I’m a vampire, I can’t be near you or I’ll lose control, I don’t want to hurt you” is so overdone, there is nothing even remotely original or interesting about these books.

I have EDS (like Yarros and her sons and supposedly Violet) and the 'representation' makes me want to crawl out of my skin. I feel like there's so many people praising the disability rep in this book but it feels so performative and unrealistic to me. It boils my blood seeing glowing reviews because of all the 'chronic illness rep'.
Not everyone with EDS has the same experiences, obviously, but this whole book shoes Violet pushing through her pain and she never has any setbacks or any accommodation. The saddle doesn't count, everyone should have that and it's a ridiculous notion that a saddle would fix her issues.
I'm happy if some disabled folks and folks with EDS liked this series and felt seen. But I know this is a lot of people's introduction to EDS and hypermobility and I KNOW this is going to be a damaging image overall.

She absolutely does have accommodations. You can't just dismiss the saddle as "not counting." The reason no one else uses one is because they don't need it. They're physically strong enough to maintain their seats through maneuvers. Because of her weaker muscles and joints, she can't, so the saddle with its leg straps is definitely an accommodation. Even a character who suffered a catastrophic injury was able to continue riding, without a saddle, because of their fitness (and with a different accommodation of their own to assist in overal mobility and mounting).
She also has to adapt in numerous other areas to stay on par with the rest of the quadrant. During the Gauntlet she used a rope to swing for momentum and a dagger to make the last part of the climb to counter her shorter legs and weaker muscles. She and Tairn modify how she performs running dismounts and other rider skills so that she can do them safely without hurting herself. Those are all accommodations. She also probably trains harder outside of class to improve her physical abilities than anyone else in the quadrant. Her lack of control of her lightning signet is probably her biggest overall setback, though that doesn't really tie in to her physical limitations. It was more a result of poor training after manifesting, but despite her overall weakness she has managed to drastically increase the number of strikes she can perform through hard work and effort.
@Jesstin86 While these are accommodations, they aren't something that in my experience are helpful for hypermobility. The saddle helps her with staying on the dragon as a strength aid. But the position in which to sit and ride an animal, like a horse as that is what I experienced, is devastating to the hip joints. Sitting in a car for a 6 hour drive would leave me unable to walk for a day or more. The saddle itself is a helpful tool, but it doesn't make sense that it is one of the only specialized tools she uses.
Her training to become physically stronger is also an interesting thing to me. I've spent years in physical therapy and the process is very much baby step forward and a baby step back. It's very difficult to train strength into muscles properly without hurting your joints when you have any sort of hypermobile condition. It takes specialized care and consideration.
I mispoke when I said there was no accommodation. What I mean is that in this representation it is extremely understated how her condition, even if minor, would affect every part of her life.
@@Jay-hastoomanycats Those are fair points. This is also a wholly fantasy universe. While Violets disability resembles one or more actual disabilities, it _is_ different within the context of this universe. There are solutions there that just wouldn't work here. If RY were to stick to the reality of EDS and the extreme limitations that can result from it, there wouldn't be much of a book to write. It allows Violet to be remarkable _because_ of the physical and mental work she puts in to overcome her limitations, not in spite of them.
Ok she did manage getting people talking about EDS and on the radar, not for good reasons, but still. So it kinda did a lot for represenations, if for the outrage over the awful one.
And that world has magic, if she wanted magical a powerfantasy and nor dealing with it, cool, she could, but she did not. She just needed to pick a lane honestly.
You should check out Crimson Rogue he also did a review for iron flame and had a few ppl with EDS weigh in on various events in the book with their own experiences. Super interesting!
I can't believe I actually thought Rebecca Yarros was going to do something mildly daring in making Xaden work for the venin and against Violet for at least a book or two, after that tease at the end of Iron Flame. She had the chance to actually put the "enemies" in enemies-to-lovers and she didn't take it?! That's your romantic, angst-filled plot right there, you don't even really need to add anything else! Xaden betrays everyone, Violet is torn between protecting the rebels, winning the war, and trying to figure out how to save him (probably having to fight against their friends, too, if they think Xaden is too far gone). Sure, it's been done a million times before but at least something happens. At least the events might *mean something*. But no. Yarros can't even give us those piddly stakes 🙄
I'm almost impressed that, despite my expectations being ridiculously low, Yarros still managed to limbo under the bar. Almost. But since the success of this book is going to continue to prove to the big publishers that they can keep rolling out unfinished, low-quality products and keep making oodles of money, I'm just disappointed. Very, very disappointed 😔
I had zero hope Xaden would actually be evil but I'm mildly hopeful maybe he'll be evil in the fourth book (I doubt it)
@athenajaxon2397 I figured it's such a standard ya trope that that's the only way it could go (more fool me) but I absolutely don't believe she'll do it for the fourth book. I don't think she has the skill as a writer to actually make him evil and then plausibly redeem him enough for them to get back together (and since they're allegedly endgame...)
Yarros is a scammer, making her fans pay so much money for her books that she put 0 thought or effort into… no one wants to read about this tired and boring ass couple anymore

I read Fourth Wing last year (I got the audiobook for free, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered), and it took me over two weeks to finish it because I had to constantly stop to ask "WTF?" "Why?" "How?" Or "wasn't this different like two chapters ago?" Over and over. I don't think I could finish the other two in a year, even if I find them for free (because I ain't paying a red cent for this)

If you really want to start writing please consider this truth nobody will tell you: The real work starts after you finished the first draft.
Books like The 4th Onyx happen because all the (re)work it needed was not invested.
To be completely transparent the books release to fast. It's nearly impossible to rework/rewrite and edit in under a year.
Especially if you pull the plot out of your pants. Don't get me wrong. I'm a pantster myself. It's nothing wrong with that but I know I will need to fix (a lot of) things. And it will be a lot of work.
I've also written romance and am a bit baffled that RY doesn't see the Romamce Problem in her series. It's kind of obvious. If there's a happy ending in a first book of a series there has to be a terrible thing to happen in book two if you want to continue with the same couple. (And I don't talk about something like Violences trust loop.) If not you need a new main couple.
I agreed with you. I have been writing for so long but only last year I finished the outline about everything but even though everything was planned I still caught some holes and I needed to spend more time to solve the problem.

OMG, i was (and still am) sick as well for this release! My darling father brought home Covid to share with the family and we are all miserable. I was out that whole week, wish i was still out but i only had so much time off work available lol....
(update at the end of the video) yeah this book was super frustrating for me. I gave high ratings to books one and two (two was also slightly disappointing but less so than Onyx Storm) it felt like Rebecca couldn't decide what book she was writing anymore? like i think the thing that drew a lot of new readers to Fourth Wing was how "current" the writing felt and then in this book it felt like she kept switching between her normal "current" style and then *trying* to write real fantasy. I actually found this entry in the series to be the most eye-roll-inducing. why do these two characters have zero connection above physical? literally the only scene i genuinely felt touched by was the scene where Xaden put her in the bath and took care of her not-seggually. the other thing that really annoyed me was how inconsistent Violet was with her level of smarts lol. she did all that manipulation and plotting in the island with Xaden's mom and then couldn't put together the pieces that maybe aaric had a reason that may or may not have been related to his signet manifesting until it was LITERALLY forced upon her? girl, be so real.
