And the film literally BEGS you to consider the protagonist a hero. They actually have testimonials from his actual family appear saying how great he was and you’re thinking - why?

Arguably considered one of the greatest tv films of all time, its legacy is somewhat forgotten since the decline interest of mob films during that time period. So good, a few years later, 30% of its screen actors went on to be casted on The Sopranos in 1999.

I assume it wasn't some planned grand thing, but a lot of butthurt Scientologists forming a hivemind to "protect" one of their most important celebrities, the marketing team even tried to spin it as some kind of attack on the movie by critics, by citing rotten tomatoes.
Scientologists are known for that for any Tom Cruise or John Travolta movie or news article. They just flood the comments with brand new accounts all saying how great the movie is, or Tom and John are.
When Bohemian Rhapsody comes out, you all ought to do an Honest Trailer for either Flash Gordon or Highlander (or both), since Queen did those movies’ soundtracks.

Having some big name actor dressed in expensive suits while talking about respect and killing random guys doesn't automatically make a good crime story.
This is one of those fake movie from Entourage, right? When E finally gets to direct a film? And please do Upgrade. You know, the better Venom movie that came out earlier this year.
I'm not a screenwriter, a professional movie critic, an expert on the Mafia, or even a regular moviegoer. In my opinion, here's the reason that the movie "Gotti" turned out to be so awful. Gotti was an arrogant, greedy asshole. He wasn't even particularly good at being evil. Why would I want to watch a movie about a second-rate gangster who devastated the Mafia through his own incompetence? He's too evil to be lovable, too inept to be admirable, and too stupid to realize he was hoist by his own petard. I would rather watch a movie about Harvey Weinstein's cosplay uniform collection than sit through this movie again.
It is almost like the user review section is the area that is super easy to manipulate and exploit. Because anonymous feedback allows literally anyone to hammer out such feedback without having to worry about sullying their own reputation. Maybe professional critics who put their names out there and make an effort to present their honest opinions should be trusted to present their honest opinions. And instead of pretending critics are some kind of Illuminati holding down the proletariat of "real fans" we instead look for critics whom we frequently share opinions with so that we can follow their advice in particular rather than looking at an aggregate score and complaining about how the numbers on the movies you like aren't high enough (because you might just be a niche audience).
Yet sometimes random forum talk is much more detailed and technical than any "professional" opinion. And professionals have biases and can be bought, and be swayed by mode. as well as their viewing habits tends to develop them all in a way that's out of touch with how most people would see moives. And holding their opinion above others is unnecessary beyond the information they can provide over what the movies faults. And what it contains. and here both from people that like and dislike something came have merit
