- Getting barrelled is the quintessential surfing experience. Nothing comes close to it. Whilst in Sumatra I really wanted to track the progress of one of my students as they focused in on the monumental task of attaining their first tube. What an honour it is to guide people through this journey - well done Ben!

One thing I’ve always done is to sink my hand in the face from the takeoff. It works to slow me down and stabilise myself. Was epic to watch the process. You are dead right when you mentioned about once it clicks.

what helped me out as a grom was surfing hollow close outs on an old board i didn't care about,
kinda forced me to knife in, and took away some of the fear of being in too deep,
the exits just came naturally after that with better wave conditions

I’m literally at the same spot of learning as this guy, we even have been surfing pretty much for the same period of time (5 years). What helps me quite a bit is to practice on some point breaks during small swells, where you aren’t scared of getting smashed by the big lip. As my mate, who’s been surfing for 20+ years, says “just don’t pussy out it’s all about the fear” 😅

This has opened my eyes so much to wave knowledge getting barreled i can do but getting barreled constantly is my worse thing... I always seem to be to much on the shoulder or to deep or and late to the wave.. cheers for these videos

I grew up in a beach town in Florida where all my friends surf but i was the poor brown indian kid who was shy… now im 40 and saw
The Olympics and want to learn! I remember everything about surfing back in the 90s my friends rocking roxy, quiksilver. Kelly slader i wanted all of that 😢 i dont live in that beach town anymore or in the US , so i searched surfing lessons here and found a few good ones with okay reviews….

My advice is to pull into as many big closeouts as you can. Especially backside. you’ll get an immediate taste and even a few pumps inside. Eventually with better conditions and little luck you’ll come out.
Can be double edged sword. Injuries

@9:24 - that was my first barrel - complete chance and accident actually.
it was hard offshores and I was bottom turning getting ready to hit the lip.
Towards the end of my bottom turn, I saw the lip pitching.
I was just trying to straighten back out (turn to the beach ) to get away from the lip.
Next thing you know I was cruisin' through the green room and came out.

I did the same thing today got 2 barrels and even have the memory bank in my head of getting up and seeing a small backdoor section going over my head while lining up for the wave
Good coaching and good TV production. Would have loved to see you successfully getting barreled, same waves, same time as your student. This might help show where and why they’re missing.

Learn to bodysurfing and start getting close out barrels now… don’t think that sounds cool enough? Then you’re probably riding surfboards (and waves) for the wrong reason (ego). Don’t think that sounds challenging enough? Making a legitimate in and out barrel while bodysurfing is next level wave riding ability.
