Even with audio being bad, the commentating alone was better than what we listen to now.
Rusty woke up a beast for the rest of the 1998 season with that move.
You mean Jeffy started using the traction control haha.
@@rebelracing88 Wasn't that a rumor in 2004? Not 1998?
Jeff was just other worldly that year. He and Ray could manipulate that car like nobody else. Everyone else tried but when you make a car as fast a T-Rex, you know you're going to win your fair share of races
He poked the bear and the bear woke up
That crowd popped as if they heard the glass shatter. What a time.
Stone Cold comes out and stuns Rusty.

After that moment, Jeff Gordon achieved Ultra Instinct and held the form through the rest of the season.
In the remaining 20 races of 1998, Gordon won 10 times and tallied 19 Top 5s, with an average finish of 2.15.
Looks like someone beat me to it! 😂
An average finish of 2.15 in 20 races is something we’ll never see again
20 top 10s and 15 top 5s.
Texas Terry! Miss the old days of racing
1998 was my favorite year for auto racing
The Rusty/Gordon spin was only the second most significant moment of this race. Far more significant was that for the first time NASCAR utilized a red flag to stop the race to make an attempt at getting a finish under green. Up until this race, NASCAR would run under caution and if they ran out of laps the race ended under caution. (notice Benny's comment that he didn't think they'd get the wreck cleaned up in time for a restart). At the time, there was some growing debate over how to ensure a finish under green. This was NASCAR's response and it set an unfortunate precedent. In the moment, it seemed to be the right decision. The fans loved it and the announcers seemed to support it, etc. After this race, this became the norm. If there was a wreck within the last 10 laps of the race, they'd immediately throw the red. Then there was debate regarding when/if the red flag should be shown. In some cases throwing the red flag did not seem to be the right thing to do, but NASCAR had already made its bed. Eventually, they decided that a Green-White-Checkered finish would be the way to go. But then they had yellows on the green-white-checkers so they decided to do 3 attempts at a green-white-checker. It has become a mess and become one of the many deplorable aspects of modern day NASCAR. In hindsight, the right thing to do would have been to let it finish under caution and for that to stay the norm for all time. There was no better indication that this was a mistake than the fact that, despite NASCAR's decision, the race finished under caution anyway. This was one of the first and most significant examples of NASCAR's evolution from being a legitimate sport to the WWE on wheels.
Now, call me a NASCAR conspiracy theorist, but I believe there is more to this story. I don't believe NASCAR came up with this red flag idea in the moment. I believe it was an idea they had been kicking around in 97 and perhaps even 96 or earlier as the debate of finishing under caution grew and grew. It is my belief that they decided between 97 and 98 that this is how they would address the issue starting with the 98 season. This Spring Richmond race was not the first opportunity to implement this idea. The last race to slowly end under caution without an attempt at a restart was none other than Dale Earnhardt's 1998 Daytona 500 win. Of course.... there was no way they would test out their new idea in that race. Everyone was happy to see that race end under caution so Dale could finally get his Daytona 500 win. The red flag idea would have to wait a little longer.... until this springtime Richmond race.
interesting info
GWC is a joke
Outstanding comment
This might be one of the most underrated races of all time
Amazing quality for 1998!
Too bad the audio wasn’t up to par, but otherwise, still really solid quality! 👌🏻
Back when they could actually field 43 drivers.
Gordon should've dumped Rusty going into 3 the lap before. Rusty squeezed him in the wall, Jeff passes Rusty clean as a whistle and Rusty proved he just didn't have it anymore because he needed to spin Gordon.
Actually rusty was paying Gordon back for bumping him out of the lead twice at Bristol.Luckily for Gordon rusty only got him back for only one time and by the way Rusty intentionally wrecked Gordon
Wallace spins Gordon
Labonte into Jarrett
90s were great!!!!
After Jeff Gordon’s Richmond accident, he won half of the final 20 races with 19 Top5s & 20 Top10 finishes. Add the 1999 Daytona 500, Jeff Gordon won 11 races over the next 21 races to go along with 21 consecutive Top10s, a modern era Top10 streak that continues to stand today. 11 wins & 10 losses in a 21 race span is like god-tier level! 🏁
In cup series racing that is ridiculous. Jimmy Johnson won more cups but jeff won way more races and dominated way more. I wonder how many championships some of these guys would have or not have if the playoffs and chase never started. My gut says Jimmy Johnson doesn't have 7 because he dominated when it counted most but in some of those seasons he wouldn't have even been in the top 4 or 5 in points with the old system but still won the playoffs.
@@rileytreelandscapingllc9140 I'm guessing 4 or 5 for Jimmie and 6 or 7 for Jeff
Not sure how many Kyle Busch wins under the old system
We'll see how many Kyle Larson wins
Yeah, traction control and dipping the tires really helped with that lol.
@@rebelracing88 Everybody cheated back then dude. If there was 1 completely legal car in this field, that crew chief should've been fired on the spot
@@rebelracing88 I did notice after rewatching this race and the spin of Jeff Gordon that his tire smoke did have a yellow look to it compared to the white smoke from the other wrecks in the same race.
Thanks NASCAR for the upload.
Back when racing was still fun

Seeing people cheering that hard for Jeff getting turned into the wall will always dumbfound me. Not because I think they're dumb or psycho, it's just crazy how much energy that guy generated by being largely clean, but so dominate that people would overlook that, especially in '98 winning 13 sodding races
It looks like he-
OH THEY MAKE CONTACT AND JEFF SPINS!
Got a spin in turn 2
GET DOWN LOW GET DOWN LOW YOU GOT IT GO GO GO!
There was nothing that I loved more back then than listening to Jeff Gordon talk through his nose.
Still one of my favorite races of all time. Gordon had it coming and I wish Rusty would’ve stuffed him in the wall more often.
I'm glad that years later Rusty finally admitted that he was pissed about Bristol the year before and intentionally dumped Gordon. LOL! Sadly for me as a Rusty fan, he didn't even win this race.
Gordon had it coming ? For bumping Rusty while he still finished 2nd ? Rusty took Gordon out, shows who was really the better driver.
Oh Rusty Fan Boy - Rusty couldn't take it ever
Yeah he can't out drive Jeff so that's his only way to stop Jeff right, rusty wasn't half the driver Jeff Gordon is
@@evilangel8194rubbing is racing snowflake
I bet this will be fun to watch
The sleeping giant awakened after this race.
RUSTYYYYYYY!!!!!!!
Contact at 2:04:57 Payback at 2:05:15 You're welcome.
Pre 2004 when NASCAR wasnt polluted with clueless leadership and false politics.
Whatever. We know who got the last laugh at the end of season.😁
That move woke up a beast that season. Worse thing Rusty could’ve done and the rest of the field had to pay for his sins.
Glad Terry won that race
Pure takeout by Rusty the Whiner. Retaliation for 97, but Jeff got him again in 02 so that was awesome. Screw Rusty
😂😢😂😢😂😢😂

Hey im from the philippines i will make this NASCAR great again thats my quote

Sure bud
Who else watched the full race
Audio is garbled
😂😅😊😂😅😊😂
That moment was cool. Anytime Jeff got wrecked was great!
Interesting how Rusty would spin Gordon out but Earnhardt never would.
Phoenix 1994.
The audio is pathetic. You couldn't clear it up somehow?
🤣🤣Awwww poor little Jeffy crash his car🥺. Waaahhhh😩
This was before NASCAR was ruined by the chase and playoffs
And heat racing
Ole Rusty RACECAR DRIVER WANNABE Wallace Still had to watch GORDON take the 2nd in a Row CHAMPIONSHIP that year!!!
