What a great and timely piece of advice (for me) - ‘Let the singer be the teacher’, Thanks Guys

Great to see you chatting with Snake. He was the first sax player I saw when I started to learn and has been a great inspiration. Can’t wait to see him perform next month. Keep up your videos as they are inspiring and help break techniques down making playing and sounding better achievable. 👍

Awesome video, so glad that you posted this. There's a big difference between playing with feeling vs. just playing notes on the page.

Great advice. I'm struggling with getting more feeling into the notes, and my teacher keeps telling me this. I'm not a vocalist, though. If I had to pick a singer to work with it would be Isaac Hanson. He writes and sings lovely ballads that I think would work beautifully with sax.

I'm inspired by Anthony Warlow. I'd love to be passionate enough to play musicals the way he sings. :D

Snake is a great player. I only found out about him a few years ago, but have probably heard his playing long before then. I never actually thought about singing a song when wanting to play it on the saxophone, just humming out the melody first, but I am starting to see how singing the words might help with bringing the right emotion to playing the song. My favorite singer would have to be Nat King Cole, especially him singing "Stardust" and I also like Michael Martin Murphy, John WIlliamson (the US country singer, not the Australian singer), James Mee, Jack Johnson and James Taylor.
I like some traditional Irish music, so recently, I have been trying to find some that I think would sound good on the saxophone, since you don't normally think of a saxophone when you think of Irish music and a lot I don't think would work on the saxophone. I found "New Ireland Orchestra" and have been listening to their "Mystical Ireland" albums and have been trying to figure out how to translate what I am hearing in some of their versions of traditional Irish songs, so it would sound good on my alto sax. I also heard a version of the old Irish song "Siúil a Rún" by Skylark and thought that version sounded a little jazzy and could work on the saxophone, even though its a traditional Irish song.

Absolutely love Louis Armstrong both his Cornet/trumpet work and the vocals on tracks like “A Kiss to Build a Dream on”

Really good tip! I have too many "favorite" vocalists, but some that inspire me are: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion and Eva Cassidy!

    Hello McGill
I don’t play the saxophone, but really enjoy all your videos! I was thinking, if i should start playing the saxophone, what type of saxophone would you recommend for a totally unexperienced person?

Hi. Either alto or tenor is the best place to start. It really depends on you. Go for it!
