Back in the day, a piano teacher gave me this advice about memorizing music that I’ve used ever since: The more types of memory your body has of the music, the better and longer you’ll remember. Like Nigel and Freddie said, sing it, play it and hear it as much as you can. Seeing the notes on the page when you play, then seeing them in your mind without the music, gives you visual memory of the tune. When you play it enough, your body will commit the song to physical memory. This is where super long-term memory comes in, because you know how the body never forgets!

Thanks Nigel. I play a lot by ear so it was good to hear that it’s really common. I think I was too worried about reading music to just have fun with what I already know.

Thanks Nigel! Good counsel. I do most of my memorizing by ear, mostly because I am very poor at reading music. Occasionally I run across something that I can't follow and I have to look for the sheet music and go over it note by note and then slowly bring it up to speed. (Presently working on "Time to say goodbye"/"Por ti volare" - the run near the beginning of the song.)

We do talk about this in Sax School a lot , it can be very difficult for me if I try to do this with a hard melody, maybe just start to learn by ear using nursery rhymes. Lol

Hey Vinny, just starting with a couple notes or one phrase is best.

Hi Nigel, quick question. I just bought a new metal mouthpiece and I was playing a plastic standard mouthpiece, so should I play a different softness reed? (I play a 3 right now)

Definitely try some different strength reeds to find what is a good match for your new mouthpiece.
