If they would have taught like this in school, I would probably be professional by now….. maybe they did and I just didn’t comprehend it then….Lol, but I don’t remember them teaching the scales with the songs like this
I actually learned from this man and now between the acoustic guitar or a simple alto sax beating in my fingers to my voice I love it.... Got so far to go but the journey has been fun
Woo
Same bro
Touche!!!
Which school did u actually attend.
Me, a college level saxophonist, watching a video for beginners. But honestly I still learned a lot from this video
I'm a high school swe ior hoping to play in college. This was incredibly helpful, even if I already knew a good bit of it
I don't even play sax just interested
me and you are doing the same thing but I didn't really learn anything I hadn't gone over yet
I'm a middle school advanced level in my first year so I kinda agreee
Great stuff Jay, I'm still a beginner, I like to learn the hook of 'classic' saxophone songs, murder them in front of my friends, have a few laughs, and then go back to long tones and scales. If i jam with my friends, we pick a key and i will noodle around a scale, usually blues... it's not fit for human consumption, but I'm getting there.. Couldn't do it without you Jay.
Jay, you are a genius. After 35 years away from playing my sax you are inspiring me to dive back in and making easy and fun! Thanks Jay!
I swear watching your videos got me to the point of ordering a beginner saxophone. I've played guitar for 14 years and still have always thought the scream of a sax is by far my favorite sounding instrument. Watching you lately gave me the confidence to spend a larger amount of money on an instrument I've never even held. Looking forward to watching more content and learning a completely new thing! I thank you for the confidence boost to make that purchase!
Live itʻ Love it¯¯¯
I’m in the exact same boat as yourself man! Gunna pick up a cheap second hand one today to get myself started :) hope it’s been going well for you
Got any updates on your musical journey?
@@cons4943 well at first it took me a while to get the embouchure and build up the muscles but I stuck to it. I've learned a bunch of songs so far all covers of modern songs though. Really focus on learning by ear! That helped me SOOOO MUCH! being able to perfectly match the note as soon as you hear it makes learning an incredible amount easier! If you're first picking up the sax don't get discouraged by the dying goose at the beginning! Keep at it and you'll eventually get there!
@@GrimReefer420x thank you for this update! Im looking to be on the same journey you started six months ago. Thanks for the confidence boost. Ive never played an instrument but the sax screams to me and as an artist i feel like im ready for a new challenge in life. Hope you continue your journey and become a sax pro.
Dude you are an awesome resource, major respect here. I know what goes into building a lesson. Always remember you will have an impact beyond what you will be able to measure! All the best to you and yours. Cheers
I'm excited to start learning with your videos... Ordered my saxophone 🎷 today...
Thank you, Jay. I’m a self taught bassist with 50+ years and still learning. I picked up keyboard for composing and arranging my own songs and later went to guitar. I’ve always felt drawn to sax and asked players which one was easier to start with. A young lady who happens to play sax in our music ministry heard about my interest in sax. One Sunday she gave me her student alto…a Bundy II.
Well you don’t have to guess what my resolution for 2024 is…😉
I'd love to see more in this series! Thank you so much for sharing!
I've had TomPlay for about 3 months now. It's been great for all the cheesy sax songs you can imagine! all the classic "must haves", Pink Panther, Baker Street, Careless Whisper, Take 5 etc.. You need to know the basics of reading sheet music though! I'm a beginner sax player. It's expensive (TomPlay) but has given me vast amounts of inspiration and laughs (as i butcher songs like "Urgent"- Foreigner )
A lot of the titles have different skill levels, the playback/accompaniment is some of the better sounding play-along's I've heard.
I wish it did have a scales section.
1:13 hallelujah
7:38 feeling good
10:05 Stand by me
This is really helpful, Jay. I’ve been applying this idea to learning new songs. I look up versions versions of a song I like, find the lyrics and learn the song until I can sing along with it. It definitely makes a difference to learning a melody more easily and accurately.
Great video, keep em coming!
Haven't picked up my horn in many years, so starting as a newbee will help me recall and re-develop good habits and muscle memory
I play tenor saxophone for fun: can’t play without notes though. I love it when you show both alto and tenor notes. Easy to comprehend. Well done
exact opposite
i can never play with sheet music
i play like a god without sheet music tho
Better sax is the reason I am playing a saxophone today because of the good explanation, from scratch to something today
Long time pianist. Can read sheet music but often play songs just from knowing melody as you describe. Especially for beginner songs this is great. Looking to try out sax, my parents never got this for me as they bought piano for family
Great channel, just started out learning my tenor saxophone
I love my TomPlay app! Started playing sax before sheet on-line music was ubiquitous, so learned by ear, but luckily learned to read music in junior high…
Jay is the key to playing sax
I just started playing the alto saxophone in 6th grade band so this channel will help with learning so much
What's that neck strap? Looks pretty cool!
Though I'm still aspiring to learn this particular instrument, I often see myself boozing and drilling with my tongue, just to produce similar sound as that of saxophone. I used to think learning this instrument is that difficult but watching this video, it's well simplified and explained. I have subscribed for more updates. And I wish I'm already learning this my favorite instrument. Thanks sir Jay
You can do it!
This has truly been a concern of mine. Thank you!❤❤❤
Love the tips I was just forced onto a tenor sax from euphonium and it's hard at first
Truly av learn something today, looking forward to subscribe to this channel
Love it! Thanks!
Excellent video with background Tomplay app. Thanks!
Another great lesson!
AmAzing video as usual 🙏 thank you so much 💖🙏
Great way to learn tunes. Thanks
You are my one and only sax teacher
You always keeep me motivated
Im quite young, and really wanna start learning saxophone, but there arent any instructors where im at so I have to do it myself, I believe this will help me a lot! Thank you!!
Thanks Jay, this is great.
I learnt to pbe using solfa notations. After I listen to a new song, the solfa notes just comes to mind and I play the song regardless of the scale it's on. Do you think I'd have to unlearn and relean? Thanks.
Great instructions
I have played Bamboo flute (from India) for almost 45 years, and I still don't remember which note is which. I have always used the same technique that you explaned in this video, intuitively. I was good at singing the songs, so I could always hear the notes in my head, and synchronized my ears and fingers found their way over the holes. It may be true that I would miss some of the embellishment notes, but well,, that was a small price to pay for the enjoyment I was getting . Thanks for sharing your thoughts and technique. It still is a huge help. My ambition is to one day play "Lonely shepherd" by Zemphir, and may be theme from Titanic.
❤Muy bien muy interesante. Muy ilustrativo. Realmente un excelente trabajo d gran calidad. Lo felicito mucho. Maestro Gran Maestro ❤Big Teacher.
Muchas Gracias
It's super cool that you don't just stick with an alto saxophone but also teach how to play tenor. You're awesome ✌️✌️✌️❣️❣️❣️🤗🤗🤗
Also, I'm a beginner sax player, played drums for Three years my guy friend who plays saxophone recommended this.
Thanks Jay my sax was gathering dust, this video gave me a push to get started again
Great to hear!
@@bettersax can I have your electric soprano
You are a amazing man, Jay. Thank you :)
Gracias por enseñarnos mucho. Así avanzamos y aprendemos d manera Divertida y con gran gusto. En nuestro hermoso y bellísimo instrumento favorito amo quiero y más conozco y me apasiono cada día más a mi instrumento el Sax
Just knowing the scale will allow you to play the melody accurately
It’s a combination of knowing the melodies in your ear and also knowing the scales they’re based in
this helped me allot
Wow. Loved the tip about NOT reading music (not always anyway). Can't wait to try those tunes (and maybe even funk them up a bit too) Love improvising, who cares if its bad right? Like singing in the shower. Thanks for these videos
I grab it. Thanks
I may just be lucky because I learned sheet music in about a week and was already on songs real quick but this is still really helpful
Amazing video!
Could you do this for intermediate and maybe advanced players
Well done Jay very informative and i been using Tomplay for about 2 years great.
This looks like a cool app. Do you know if you're allowed to use the tracks in public, i.e., play gigs using them?
That was so wonderful. I can see that instrument is great particularly when played well. Must get one and start learning but which one: Alto or Tenor? I prefer the mellow deeper sound of Tenor, like a rich smooth wine, but its heavier and needs more puff, but how much of an issue are they for a learner?
Great video! I always use the pentatonic scale with my Native American flutes. I'll now be using it with my alto saxophone.
Amazing Grace is Pentatonic
Very lovely information
I like saxophone very much too.
I played for 6 years and it was still interesting to watch. What sax do u prefer, I'm a alto
Outstanding lesson!! Please tell us where you got that “red neck strap” from!!! My son is going to a college where the school color is predominantly red! Ty!
I watched it again. great, great, great :)
Great, very easy.
Could you let me know what the make of the nice red neck strap is that you are using? Thanks in advance and kindest regards👍👍.
Hi , good day to you dear mentor.
May I ask what is the best Saxophone for me to buy as a beginner . I haven't play it before even once.
I'm so interested to learn . Please advise.
thank you
Gary
Self taught love my saxophone 🎷🎷🎷
Over many years I’ve been amazed at how many people don’t seem to be able to listen to a tune (song/piece) and not be able to ‘hear’ it well enough to repeat it! Now these, they may have heard them enough times to remember them.. one hopes.
So much easier to learn how to read sheet music, but agree there are some beginners whom reading is impossible, and if they have a strong ear, they can play the simple melodys by rote.
Do you have a similar video for soprano sax?
uah! you sing very well maestro! Bravo cantante 💥😄💥🐻👍✨✨🎷✨✨
Hey Jay! I'm currently playing Bari in my high school marching band and I'm struggling with a few notes in the music. We have a low C# and Bb in the music and I'm tending to not be able to play with correct note length and sometimes pitch. I wondering what you may think the issue is, I can play the notes sometimes but other times they just sound either really poor is very sharp. Thanks!
Bari needs a lot of air and a relaxed embouchure. You likely need to work on taking larger breaths, pushing more air through the horn and a looser embouchure. Maybe take more mouthpiece in your mouth too.
A beautiful weapon. I, especially, like the same’ nuri sheath.
Which saxophone neck straps are you using in this video??where can I buy it??
Oh My god I am buying a saxophone I really am,you so amazing
Thank you.
I absolutely love your video they are so helpful. I put your @ and link to ur channel on one of my videos so more ppl know your channel
Thanks Jay, Awesome stuff for a 72 year old guy starting to play alto and tenor sax. By the way i watch your videos all the time. Keep um coming. What brand is your neck strap?
That’s a BG Zen strap
@@bettersax do you like it better than the jazzlab sax holder?
Im wondering if you know an app for iOS called impro master! Its great for practicing... maybe you could do a video on it.... Thanks for your videos!!!
Hello Jay, thanks for the videos. I cannot find the tunes hallelujah on Tomplay with that key starting with f# and accompanying. Could you, please send me the link?
You are right. Always trust your ears and fingers
I'm a beginner alto sax player I play for my middle I started alto sax around October or November and I have gotten pretty good. Due to this kind gentlemen
Good to hear
Greetings from Rhodes island in Greece
I want to ask you wich is the best ligature for my mouthpiece which is modern Meyer 7* because here in Greece we can try it only buy it
Thank you very much
7:23 Now that's cool
Question. So to play a alto or a tenor sax you need 2 different instruments or just different spots on your fingers???
Hi!
Found this looking on info to help my neice jam with me (I play guitar). I'm trying to find a pentatonic scale for her to use to jam with me if I'm doing blues in like E or A . I understand that the sax notes don't match up But I'm having the hardest time finding any kind of info on what she can play to jam with our group if we're doing something like blues in e or A . Any advice or Even point me to a resource? I bought her two blues books but they don't seem to address this directly
I’m a new Sax player, what keys should I use for fingering, I have a Tenner Sax with a few Pearl keys.
Hello Jay, thanks for the lessons, I am a beginner and I am already noticing my progress thanks to you! I have watched and practised the pentatonic scale as you showed in the PSBE Lesson 1 with my alto sax, with "G A B D E G". I am an absolute beginner to music in general.... When you say "we're going to do this with concert F, major D for alto sax" what does it mean? Should I replace the G (1,2,3) with the D(1,2,3. 1,2,3)??? My pentatonic scale does not sound like yours. I would love to learn Hallelujah, and it would've helped if you indicated the letters when you're playing.
Yes you need to play the D pentatonic scale for that one. D E F# A B D
I really need a saxophone love Play it
Sweet :) 😎
Hmm, interesting, I’ll try them out! Also I have a question for you: I am switching to the tenor from the alto in this coming week and I would love to hear some tips on making the switch easier! Thank you for the amazing video once again Jay!
@@trup1372 Of course it isn't. Just report the comment.
Great channel… love your videos. Years ago, I rented a sax and the first song I learned was Last Tango, by Gato.
Really sorry for the slow reply… you left me an ‘invitation’ to telegram and chat. Really appreciated it. What is the link again? So sorry bro.
@@william5159 that is a scam by professional spammer.
@@grantkoeller8911 Huh, interesting. Thanks for the head’s up bro.
Jay, this is wonderful. I've been wondering if you plan on ever doing a video about neck cork replacement?😊 I live far from any saxophone service places, so I'll have to do this job myself😬
Use the search feature on RUclips for this. Just search replace sax neck cork and you'll see several. Rubber cement or contact cement, bevel the edge on one side, after wrapping just sand the edge smooth. If I can do it you can too.🎷
Music Medic has a video. You don't need a torch as they say. Just boil some water in a small measuring cup and dip the end in to soften the existing glue. Make sure surface is clean and dry. Bevel the edge of the new cork by dragging edge on some finer grit sandpaper. Take your time, careful with your finish.
@@XB29SP Alan, thanks so much. You've been a great help to me. I did see some of the tutorials on this subject matter, but I'd like to see even more😂 I guess if I'm careful I won't damage the saxophone. I ordered some sheets of cork from Aliexpress. Not expensive.
I'm beginner clarinet, always watching sax video's for good easy tunes. Thx
Hello, I'm Simone. I'm going to start to study with your online courses soon. I would like to know what you think about the Emeo sax. Thanks ;)
Emeo is amazing, video review coming soon
Me watching this as a trumpet player at 1am knowing very well I’m not going to change my instrument 😅
Can you tell how to improve Bb
I recently bought a Daddario D6M and it sounds very airy and feels resistant. Low notes are hard to get out and notes with the octave key squeak often. I used to play on a Yamaha 4C. Is this a reed problem? I play on a 2.5 and 3 size reeds.
You went up TWO opening sizes that's like going from a 2.5 reed to a 3.5 or even a 4!
Try a softer reed than you play on the 4c like a Rico 2. When I went from a Yamaha 4c to a Vandoren v16 5 tip opening, I had to go down half a reed size and it took a little bit to get back to the reed strength I was at before.
A Yamaha 4 C is a tiny tip opening on alto, about .063" thousands of an inch. A Daddario 6M is about .075" !!!! A massive difference. Try out softer reeds on larger mouthpiece like 2's or 2.5's. real cane not synthetic. Make sure reed is wet,and not dry as a bone.
What's the title from the 2nd part song?
These songs are more advanced than the simple standard nursery rhymes folk songs, like Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or twinkle twinkle little star that is taught in Essential Elements or Rubank Elementary method.
Everyone learns music by ear first. Humans have done it that way for 10s of thousands of years. Sheet music is a very recent invention and is much harder than playing by ear.
Your my best saxophone teacher sofar
thank you!
I'm 68 and have an alto saxaphone and want to learn but I don't know where to start or what to do first. What do I practice first and where do I go from there? Can you help?
How to tell what key is used
Hey, the background music in the intro is the same as the Why Files outro music!
I have a harbinger Bluetooth MB-100. How would I get the quality sound as you do on your videos? I know the the three songs in my head, but I want the studio sound without having to go to a studio. I haven't pushed myself enough since high school to be better. Navy Retired limited income. I have a Blessings tenor and Vito LeBlanc alto. I go to my cousins open mic night locally and become all thumbs. 66 years young and just want to be better. My tone isn't the problem, and I learned how to use the diaphragm. Ombisher is all over the place , and again, I believe, due to a lack of practice. Can you help an old buzzard like me?
Hello excuse me can I ask you any problem of Alto saxophone? My alto saxophone is wrong note when I flew D it's sound is C# can you tell me why? Thank you first for your answer!
Is your mouthpiece pushed in far enough on the neck cork?
Would highly appreciate a video just like this one for soprano Saxophone ☺️ your videos are amazing
I would really appreciate it if you could tell me what that neck strap is? It's so my color.
BG makes that
Question, what sax do u recommend for beginners??
The BetterSax alto linked in description.
hello. I really like your videos and your channel.
You're doing an incredible job advertising something that doesn't exist. tomplay.
Nina Simone "Feeling good" not available on this show.
Shrek Hallelujah is not quite Leonad Cohen's hallelujah.
I use tomplay. There are a lot of nice arrangements there.
Regards.
