Great stuff Jay, I'm still a beginner, I like to learn the hook of 'classic' saxophone songs, murder them in front of my friends, have a few laughs, and then go back to long tones and scales. If i jam with my friends, we pick a key and i will noodle around a scale, usually blues... it's not fit for human consumption, but I'm getting there.. Couldn't do it without you Jay.

Watching you lately gave me the confidence to spend a larger amount of money on an instrument I've never even held. Looking forward to watching more content and learning a completely new thing! @@cons4943 well at first it took me a while to get the embouchure and build up the muscles but I stuck to it. I've learned a bunch of songs so far all covers of modern songs though. Really focus on learning by ear! That helped me SOOOO MUCH! being able to perfectly match the note as soon as you hear it makes learning an incredible amount easier! If you're first picking up the sax don't get discouraged by the dying goose at the beginning! Keep at it and you'll eventually get there!

Thank you, Jay. I’m a self taught bassist with 50+ years and still learning. I picked up keyboard for composing and arranging my own songs and later went to guitar. I’ve always felt drawn to sax and asked players which one was easier to start with. A young lady who happens to play sax in our music ministry heard about my interest in sax. One Sunday she gave me her student alto…a Bundy II.
Well you don’t have to guess what my resolution for 2024 is…😉

I've had TomPlay for about 3 months now. It's been great for all the cheesy sax songs you can imagine! all the classic "must haves", Pink Panther, Baker Street, Careless Whisper, Take 5 etc.. You need to know the basics of reading sheet music though! I'm a beginner sax player. It's expensive (TomPlay) but has given me vast amounts of inspiration and laughs (as i butcher songs like "Urgent"- Foreigner )
A lot of the titles have different skill levels, the playback/accompaniment is some of the better sounding play-along's I've heard.
I wish it did have a scales section.

I have played Bamboo flute (from India) for almost 45 years, and I still don't remember which note is which. I have always used the same technique that you explaned in this video, intuitively. I was good at singing the songs, so I could always hear the notes in my head, and synchronized my ears and fingers found their way over the holes. It may be true that I would miss some of the embellishment notes, but well,, that was a small price to pay for the enjoyment I was getting . Thanks for sharing your thoughts and technique. It still is a huge help. My ambition is to one day play "Lonely shepherd" by Zemphir, and may be theme from Titanic.

We have a low C# and Bb in the music and I'm tending to not be able to play with correct note length and sometimes pitch. • @bettersax

Bari needs a lot of air and a relaxed embouchure. You likely need to work on taking larger breaths, pushing more air through the horn and a looser embouchure. Maybe take more mouthpiece in your mouth too.

Music Medic has a video. You don't need a torch as they say. Just boil some water in a small measuring cup and dip the end in to soften the existing glue. Make sure surface is clean and dry. Bevel the edge of the new cork by dragging edge on some finer grit sandpaper. Take your time, careful with your finish.

@@XB29SP Alan, thanks so much. You've been a great help to me. I did see some of the tutorials on this subject matter, but I'd like to see even more😂 I guess if I'm careful I won't damage the saxophone. I ordered some sheets of cork from Aliexpress. Not expensive.

I recently bought a Daddario D6M and it sounds very airy and feels resistant. Low notes are hard to get out and notes with the octave key squeak often. I used to play on a Yamaha 4C. Is this a reed problem? I play on a 2.5 and 3 size reeds.

You went up TWO opening sizes that's like going from a 2.5 reed to a 3.5 or even a 4!
Try a softer reed than you play on the 4c like a Rico 2. When I went from a Yamaha 4c to a Vandoren v16 5 tip opening, I had to go down half a reed size and it took a little bit to get back to the reed strength I was at before.

A Yamaha 4 C is a tiny tip opening on alto, about .063" thousands of an inch. A Daddario 6M is about .075" !!!! A massive difference. Try out softer reeds on larger mouthpiece like 2's or 2.5's. real cane not synthetic. Make sure reed is wet,and not dry as a bone.

These songs are more advanced than the simple standard nursery rhymes folk songs, like Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or twinkle twinkle little star that is taught in Essential Elements or Rubank Elementary method.

Everyone learns music by ear first. Humans have done it that way for 10s of thousands of years. Sheet music is a very recent invention and is much harder than playing by ear.

I have a harbinger Bluetooth MB-100. How would I get the quality sound as you do on your videos? I know the the three songs in my head, but I want the studio sound without having to go to a studio. I haven't pushed myself enough since high school to be better. Navy Retired limited income. I have a Blessings tenor and Vito LeBlanc alto. I go to my cousins open mic night locally and become all thumbs. 66 years young and just want to be better. My tone isn't the problem, and I learned how to use the diaphragm. Ombisher is all over the place , and again, I believe, due to a lack of practice. Can you help an old buzzard like me?

hello. I really like your videos and your channel.
You're doing an incredible job advertising something that doesn't exist. tomplay.
Nina Simone "Feeling good" not available on this show.
Shrek Hallelujah is not quite Leonad Cohen's hallelujah.
I use tomplay. There are a lot of nice arrangements there.
    Regards.
