@AJ Kalvelage saxaphone's have a poor range? I didn't know that, I play a alto and thought we had a good range. I mean it can go really high, and go to a mid level baritone sound.
I remember the first time I ever played saxophone. I spent an hour not getting a sound because I had my left index finger on the key above the B that's used for high notes (on my model it looked like the rest of the keys so I thought it was the first key) until I accidentally put my finger too low and all the notes suddenly came out... Fun times
I got sax lessons from my school and my teacher just wouldnt take anyone on who couldnt produce a note in 10 minutes which probably wasnt fair but made his life easier lol. Also i wish he told rob to put less in his mouth
It's easy for us old hats to chuckle at this, but I've been playing so long it's hard to remember those first awkward months. I KNOW I was worse at it than he was. Keep practicing. It will happen.
This video is a good example of how useful music experience is to learning new instruments. The first one is always the hardest, but then even trying a completely different family, you what to aim for with your learning
As like other instruments it takes years and years .the beginners can get a tune of some description in the early days ,and make them feel good .☝️ but to master it now that is something else .
I remember hearing that for the first time. The keys were kinda cool, seemed like the dude was trying to keep up. And then Coltrane just blows right past with that fast paced saxophone, truly an experience. And then I got into the theory of it, and having a key change a bar, at 130 bpm, truly a mastermind
I remember 2 summers ago I signed up for a Jazz band camp and I thought we would learn our instruments there. I had picked the Alto sax and I knew nothing about it aside from the fact that it was a woodwind instrument. I had previously played clarinet so I knew the basics on the mouthpiece but that was about it. When I got there I was put into a room full of people which some I knew definitely didn't know how to play. Everyone was given a test for how good your sound was. He showed us a few different notes and when it came to turning to throw them all together apparently I did well enough to land me in 1st chair with the 8th graders at the time. It was cool because I could brag to my 2nd chair friends but everyone in 1st chair had a lot of that I did not have. to end this short I ended up having to learn 3 on the alto in 3 weeks while also learning how to play to thing but it was alright in the end because it worked out alright and I'm still playing the Alto to this day.
I've been learning to play saxophone since I was 7 and by the time I turned 13, I started playing in jazz orchestra at our music school. Enjoyed this time a lot as we were traveling to different cities and winning some music contests from time to time. The problem was that I had always dreamt to play the electric guitar, which is why I stopped playing saxophone about the age of 17 and never wanted to get back)) Still enjoy playing some jazz standards on the guitar though. Aaand... I want to give the saxophone another try after this video lol.
I think it’s very fun to see someone try it’s a great start. At least he can get sound out of it but it takes time and practice. Don’t think your going to learn much in a week, but with time and you must put in time. You will get better just make sure you enjoy playing and learning.
Two things: one, bloody amazing for your first time playing a sax; you'll make a fine addition to the woodwinds; two, I got flashbacks to middle school band class and I still miss playing the clarinet
Soooo, sax covers coming soon? Also, as a sax player: shhhhhhh. You are putting so much air through it, great tone for never having touched it before though.
I have played saxophone for 8 years and started at the age of 8 yet never new that there is flavoured reeds, mabye it would make me practice more as a kid.😃
Honestly, as a 12 yo kid who is playing the saxophone for 4 years, i instantly knew how to blow in it. I started off with soft reeds. Vandoren- 1, and now i've upgraded to Vandoren- 1 1/2
Yo rob, when it comes to wind instruments, woodwinds have their own mouthpieces and never really share reeds unless in some extreme cases while brass musicians tend to care less as long as you wipe the mouthpiece and/or wash it.
Reminds me of TwoSet Violin when they try to learn to play instruments within 1 hour straight. Honestly, you're doing some great progress on the Saxophone, and I say, keep up the great work!
As Sax player I cringed in the fact that thats probably how I sounded when I first started practicing at home . Props to my mom for putting up with that.

I played a little bit of the baritone saxophone when I was in both 7th and 8th grade. I looked up how many hours does it take to learn saxophone, and it takes 10,000 hours to be a master! I play the alto saxophone in my school’s marching band and do tenor saxophone in my school concert band!
@@ph-jx4bd No, its legit not sarcastic, that very first note he played sounded alright. The rest was hot garbage but still, the first note he played was decent.

After not having playing my original clarinet for 66 years, the reed placement on the mouthpiece (okay tried a few mouthpieces) is the total key to fixing squawks et al. All children should be intensely educated in the beginning of playing any reed instrument on that point. So there is one thing I will say I didn’t agree with him on (no hate toward him, he’s way better than me) but a good way to install your reed is to place it where it goes in the ligature, then slide the ligature and reed together onto the mouthpiece and tighten. "I practice circular breathing while driving in my car. It's probably not very safe." is one of the most saxophonist things ever said.

90% of the Saxophon players never do circular breathing. 😝
Why would circular breathing be dangerous in any case ? I can do this almost automatically lol do people struggle or something?
