I personally find Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan really helpful when it comes to how and when to use vibrato so that it seems more natural (: Recommend listening to them!

Good tips. Although I listen to lots of sax players, I often find more inspiration from certain vocalists. Trying to imitate their phrasing and dynamics helps me get closer to sounding the way I want.

Great material! Thanks. I'm a long-time amateur bari player. My biggest inspiration has always been Johnny Hartman.

Cool Barry, I love Johnny Hartman - what a great voice! And, the Coltrane / Hartman album is one of my favourites.

Very nice! Wow, playing in front of that many people with no rehearsal?!? I'm not sure I could even do that in front of ten people LOL Good stuff guys :) On a side note, Why does there always have to be someone who clicks 'dislike' on a video with such wonderful advice from true professionals of the trade? Have never understood that.

Can you do a video about how to perform standing up with a sax? I struggle with a good posture and supporting the instrument. I play tenor so that might make it a little bit more difficult for me too.

I played at My Dads 80th birthday party last weekend. It was a house party so confined space and very smokey. I have come away feeling good that was able to perform n front of 20 or so people. They seemed to enjoy the night. I have come away with with a sax that stinks of cigarettes now. Is there anything I can do to eradicate the stench? I replaced the reed and cleaned the mouthpiece but I wondered if there anything else I could do for the rest of it

My background is rock, not jazz. When "The Blues Brothers" came out in 1980, I had my alto reworked and was suddenly in demand. I had an excuse to emulate Clarence Clemmons, Maceo Parker (James Brown), Junior Walker (and the All Stars) and all those Motown/Stax session players. Still, I probably stole more licks from BB King and the guitarists in the band. Sadly, I also stole harmonica licks, which put at least one harp player out of business.
