Join us a we enjoy the fall colors of Michigan (Oct 2020) and our boondocking sites along the way and a visit to the historic town of Idlewild.
Relaxing for a few minutes in the morning sun, we grabbed the book of "Oddities & Rarities - Michigan Back Roads" by Ron Rademacher to see what was nearby. (mibackroads.myshopify.com/products/oddities-rarities-michigan-back-roads). There was a section titled "Idlewild Revisited" that caught our eye. The passage read, "In Lake County, Michigan, is a small town with a most unique history. Idewild enjoyed explosive growth and popularity, nearly became a ghost town, and is on the rise again. This was the first free black community in Michigan."
This was interesting, because less than 2 weeks earlier we had read an article in the "Michigan History magazine" about Detroit's Green Book. In short, it was an African-American travelers' book published from the 1930's through the 1960's, listing establishments that welcomed black patrons. In the article they showed a picture of Michigan with green dots scaled by maximum number of entries in a given area. The green dot around the Baldwin area, the largest in Michigan outside of Detroit, caught our attention at the time, but we had no idea of the history. We decided we had to investigate.
The Jordan River Scenic Drive includes connecting seasonal County Roads that travel through the Jordan River Valley (we started at 45.010905, -85.064657)
An overlook of the river valley can be seen at Deadman's Hill Overlook (45.044982, -84.933778)

Love the photography/video. Fall colors make me want a bowl of Fruity Pebbles... Excellent narrator... Natural voice for this kind of thing.

I really enjoyed your aerial footage of country that I have previously only enjoyed at ground level. This forest, and the fall colors, are very pretty. Thank you.
