  • Black Nomads, Tent Campers, RVers, Travel Bloggers, Nature Enthusiasts, Artists, Dancers, Musicians, what are you looking for in an outdoor community?
What would you want to experience in the historically Black resort town of Idlewild, Michigan?
In this video the Elders, Mr. Joe Lindsey and Mr. Warren Thomas, as well as my cousin Lydia Hicks ask this very question. Amal, Winston and I ride shotgun with Lydia through the historic town of Idlewild, Michigan otherwise known as "Black Eden". We chat with current and former residents about outdoor recreation, the culture of Idlewild and what it takes to maintain community in a historically black town.
Joe and Lydia, current members of the Idlewild Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, share how they are working to improve township owned properties, make more parks and create a welcoming environment for new residents and visitors!
This video highlights three parks in Idlewild, Michigan:
Lindsey Park, Meeks Park and Williams Island

Black men who invest sustained time and talent can build, sustain and innovate can rebuild communities. We must teach a strong sense of stewardship and working together. We need to stick together in order rebuild together. This segment was so enlightening. We must protect our places to be and thrive.

Oh, yes, the roller rink !!! That was fun. At night you could hear the music across the lake. Horseback riding on the trails was another fond memory I have of being there in the 50s.

I was driving around in the 80s late i guess and thought I was entering Detroit and rembered i was upnorth and said there no black ppl up north and there wasn't for the most part at that time not alot anyways that was what I was told from family that had homes up there to in gaylord. I was young and got scared cause of Detroit. I remember getting funny looks from some of the ppl there. It was before they fixed it up cause it didnt look that way as today. Must of been who that wyite boy be. I never told anyone after awhile cause it seemed like a secret. Also I have driven all over Michigan and not seen any up in upper peninsula. I happy I had a chance to see while I was there.
