- After buying a pub recently, James May decided his new premises needed testing before it fully opened to the public. So staff members of DriveTribe, FoodTribe and friends were invited to test out the menu and the accommodation, in preparation for the grand re-opening of The Royal Oak. Here's what happened...

southampton. it's perfect. seaside town and a 20 minute drive and you are in a nice forest village reminding me of southern germany (where i live)

How James May hosts a dinner: lets guests sit down at the table waiting for food then proceeds to drink fine wine in the corridor by himself
Because of rule of 6, with Covid-19 the regulations meant in that area you could meet with anyone outside of your household in no more than a group of 6. James lives in London therefore he was in a different tier and wasn’t allowed to meet others outside of his household. We are now in a national lockdown

For the acoustics: try sticking self-adhesive carpet squares to the underside of the tables. I know that sounds odd but they will be out-of-the-way, won't collect too much dust (because they are all upside-down), and will absorb a bit of noise; particularly high-frequency.
Minimal decor really doesn't suit pubs and restaurants they just end up loud and annoying. Some curtains and clutter are essential.
I know I'm late to the party, but I had just heard the news...here in 2022. Congratulations Mr. May's. I genuinely hope things are still as joyful as they were on this day. Thank you Sir for the entertainment your journey has provided the world. Regardless of the what happens you can say you've done it. What most haven't. You've Been there. You made it mate.

the color temperature of the lights is way too cold especially in the part where james was sitting
warmwhite is way more cozy and it is a must change for sure
You can clearly see additional bright lighting has been added by the film crew for this episode.The light outlines on the walls behind the subjects and the location of the shadows is a dead giveaway to temporary production lighting in the rooms rooms.

its coming from above , no "film crew" actually no one period would put additional lighting right above someone
and have his face be completely in the shadows for the whole shot .
also there is a few fast sweeping shots and i have not seen even one light on a tripod or something similar.
Should have been a spam pie, these meals are too fancy for May!
Half of the meals on the menu are 70s sandwiches or "spam based". The Other half is Simons :)

Dear James,
There are some companies that produce artwork on noise reducing material - so they look like artwork, but act like accoustic dampening.
They work quite well. Alternatively, you could consider accoustic plaster. It works like regular plaster for walls or ceilings, but absorb and diverge sound. We have it at our current office, which is a building of similar age and 'ye olde-eness'. I will recommend.

Man, the biggest takeaway from this video is how daft the COVID regulations are in practice.
It's odd because it's mostly in Britain and really makes no sense. If any of these people actually had Covid, 90% of people in the video would have it.

I have never been to a restaurant where I said, "this portion is too big". Then again my waist line clearly proves I seek large portions.

@Mark Seymour I understand it's the law in some places but that doesn't make it any more effective. If it's required then go ahead and follow along. However, the fact that they took the liberty on their own part to celebrate it, as if it did anything, was incredibly cringy.
@Mark Seymour When I said "took the liberty" I meant they did so without compulsion (ie. by their own will). They walked in with masks, only to sit together without them, less than 6ft (2m) apart. It is understandable that they wore the masks to begin with- due to government compulsion (or as you stated- peer pressure) But the fact that they then made a toast (at their own liberty) to "social distancing" when clearly that was the last thing they were doing is absurd.

about 12 years ago i stood next to James, Jeremy and Richard. It was at a top gear live show so they were not paying attention. But it was one of the greatest moments of my life just standing close and taking a picture with my idols.
